The first ever She Makes Music Presents show will take place at The Birdcage in Lincoln on Saturday 24th October, bringing together three brilliant bands from across the Midlands and North for a completely free night of live music.

Heading up the bill are Nottingham grunge rockers Hex Poseur, joined by Lincoln ska punks Suburban Toys and Manchester alt-punks The Dirty Looks.

SMM Presents is a natural extension of what She Makes Music has been doing since 2012: creating space for brilliant artists and helping people discover new music. The live nights will carry that same ethos into grassroots venues, with a focus on inclusive, carefully curated line-ups and supporting artists at grassroots level.

The Birdcage felt like the perfect place to begin. A small, independent and welcoming Lincoln venue, it provides exactly the kind of intimate setting envisioned for the first SMM Presents show — and hopefully the first of many.

“Every once in a while I get the absurd impulse to bleach my hair, like that’s somehow going to change how I feel inside,” Bianqui shares. “When I wrote ‘All My Heroes Are Dead,’ that urge came back, and I could feel my self-destructive side creeping in again — so instead of acting on it, I turned it into a character. I imagined a bratty teenager who’d decided everything was a bit shit and leaned all the way into the chaos. There’s a lot of me in her, but she’s exaggerated — the volume turned all the way up. The song became my way of bringing some levity to a heavy subject, and reminding myself not to take every dark thought so seriously.”

On Use Once Then Destroy, Bianqui builds a world of larger-than-life characters — obsessive lovers, antiheroes, rock stars, self-destructive brats. Familiar rock ‘n’ roll tropes are exaggerated, inverted, and reimagined through dark humor, vivid storytelling, and a playful approach to the genre’s mythology. Bianqui balances sharp satire with emotional intensity to explore obsession, desire, power, and disposability, while questioning the myths we create around ourselves and others.

Lisa delivers a playful take on repetition on ‘A Fleeting Thought Becomes Another Fleeting Thought,’ the opening track from Patchwork, her sixth album. Set to a galloping rhythm, the song builds in intensity with dramatic organ melodies and a folky 12-string electric guitar while showcasing Lisa’s enchanting vocals. The layers of repeating vocal harmonies echo her restless nature and the fleeting thoughts that often cross her mind before she can even grasp them, a theme that directly inspired this new earworm.

Lisa explains, “This was the first song to be written on what would become the Patchwork record. I wanted the chorus to repeat multiple times to create a sort of hypnotic drone that mimics the restless feelings and thoughts that constantly spiral in my mind. The influences were a mix of ‘Edge of Seventeen’ by Stevie Nicks, 60s rock and roll and even a little medieval touch with the 12-string electric guitar.”

Director, Alexandre Pelletier says “Aiming for exceptional performances in exceptional settings was the mantra that guided us while making this music video. Much like the song, the Acadian landscape is as magnificent as it is mysterious. Both during location scouting and filming, we were mesmerized by the sunsets that lit up the fields and the twilight mist gliding across the water—and we tried to capture those moments on camera.”

Sometimes, when life brings you to a crossroads, the only option is to trust your gut. For Chrissi, that instinct has shaped the making of I HATE YOU DON’T LEAVE ME ! The album traces the messy territory between love and loss, self-doubt and self-discovery, finding humour, tenderness and clarity in the experiences that have shaped her.

At the centre of the album is its title track, a song about the contradiction of knowing something is hurting you while still desperately wanting it to stay. ‘I HATE YOU DON’T LEAVE ME !’ moves through codependency, self-destruction and the difficulty of letting go, finding Chrissi caught between wanting to sever the tie and the part of herself that still cannot bear to.

“‘I HATE YOU DON’T LEAVE ME !’ is about codependency and my personal inability to let go of anything without leaving claw marks, but trying to let go and do better,”  explains Chrissi.

The song arrived during Chrissi’s first studio session after six months away from music. Following the discovery that her ex-boyfriend had been lying to her throughout their relationship, she had convinced herself that he was the only person who would ever love her. Returning to the studio, ‘I HATE YOU DON’T LEAVE ME !’ offered a different perspective. What began as heartbreak became a way of understanding herself, and eventually, a way forward.

The album takes that story and opens it out. I HATE YOU DON’T LEAVE ME ! is a record about falling in love, struggling to leave, and learning what it means to grow from girlhood into womanhood while navigating the experiences that shape you along the way.

“I HATE YOU DON’T LEAVE ME ! is the full story of the song on a larger scale, going into my moments of feeling in love and why it was hard to sever the tie. It also covers my experience as a girl growing into womanhood and still trying to navigate all the negative experiences that come with it.” comments Chrissi.

you made me / skin on linen, depicts a childhood shaped by structural, systemic, and intimate violence. Throughout the record, art-making motifs serve as metaphors for the myriad ways we carry the effects of this violence: each experience leaves an impression, gradually creating or deforming the self, much like a piece of clay moulded by every mark it receives. The record resists simple conclusions; rather than offering a single perspective, it examines violence as a ubiquitous facet of our culture. It asks questions—how does violence impact our development? Are our wounds inextricable parts of us? And if not, then where do our wounds end and we begin?—and allows the listener to devise their own answers.

The band has shared their first offering from the album, ‘time loop at hot slit,’ a frenetic noise-punk examination of girlhood in a culture of sexualization.  The song pairs a danceable chorus with witty, poetic lyrics wailed in anguish and uncanny eroticism. This official video was co-directed by PISS front-person Taylor Zantingh and Vivyen Sagsen. Filmed at the now-closed-down DIY space, Take Yr Time Back in Vancouver, BC, Zantingh shares: “Some of the people with whom I shared the earliest version of “time loop at hot slit” take the stage to sing it themselves. Our local scene has been singing this song with us for two years!! It’s very exciting to finally share it with the world, but no matter where it ends up, it will always belong to the femmes, queers, and weirdos in the Vancouver underground community <3”.

‘Death Rolls Like Thunder’ uses the Battle of Little Bighorn, also known as Custer’s Last Stand, as its setting, drawing on the historic battle to tell a story about resistance in the face of seemingly inevitable defeat. The song casts the forces of greed, ego, and inhumanity as the devil riding in on a pale horse, his army following. Death and destruction appear before the tables turn and the riders who have come to conquer are defeated.

“The battle is an example from our own history about the power of a people defending their land and their right to remain,” Marks explains. “It’s a reminder of people throughout history who have fought against the undoing of their world. People who have found ways to hold on, to resist, to rebuild. Remembering these stories feels so important today, to remind us that we have that same power.”

That refusal to surrender in the face of uncertainty extends throughout Hell Or High Water. Marks leans further into the blues than ever before on the album, drawing on the gospel, country soul, and rock n’ roll traditions that have long shaped her music. Produced by and co-written with longtime collaborator Justin Phipps, the record emerged from a period of enormous personal change; in 2024, Marks’ 29-year marriage ended amicably, and shortly afterward, she began her journey with sobriety.

Across the album, she moves through loss, uncertainty, injustice, grief, and personal struggle while holding fiercely to hope, healing, and freedom. “Hell Or High Water is an album about resilience, healing, freedom, and choosing hope in the face of pain,” Marks explains. “These songs acknowledge the darkness without surrendering to it. I find comfort in nature, music, community, faith, memory, and the simple moments that bring me back to myself.”

The older ‘sister’ to her prized early single ‘Watch Me Read You’ – an arresting spoken word undressing of a non-committal partner – ‘Watch Me Go’ amplifies its sentiment of frustration with the gift of hindsight. With perspective and self assessment at the heart of the lyrics, Odette says, “This song is me trying to honour my good intentions and failings as a person.” her confessional songwriting cascades against ‘Watch Me Go’s crescendoing production. The repeated piano melody plays against the mental gymnastics of the relationship at hand. Mounting polyphonic production of strings, keys and percussion ultimately leads her to surrender.

Odette explains, “’Watch Me Go’ is a yearning to understand the rupture of a relationship and the turmoil that went down during its life. This song was written about my first lesbian heartbreak, but I know there are remnants of loss in this song from other failed relationships and people who I no longer speak to after the years where I was not okay. It is a shedding of grief, a realisation of the self and a releasing of shame as I try to break myself from ruminating on the past and accept the present.”

Alongside the album announcement, Anna has debuted the title track ‘Back to Pennsylvania’ today. Written shortly after her move from Brooklyn back into her parents’ home, the song became an emotional catalyst for the rest of the record. What began as a break-up song transformed into something completely different. ‘Back to Pennsylvania’ is a snapshot of the moment Anna began to see a setback as something more promising; a chance to see her flowers truly grow again. “’Back to Pennsylvania’ is a song about growing through pain,” says Anna. “It’s about returning to your roots and reconnecting with yourself when shit hits the fan.” The track marks her third and latest preview of the forthcoming LP, joining the previously released tracks ‘Girl Song’ and ‘Counting’.

Now, the duo are officially launching the project and sharing their first single ‘Fully Slow.’ With Sean Sroka (Ten Kills the Pack) on board as a producer, engineering by Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck, Bully, Alvvays) and tracks mixed by Alex Farrar (MJ Lenderman, Soccer Mommy, Angel Olsen).

The track comes from the duo’s self-titled debut, which is also being announced. The album will be released on October 16 on a new label founded by Georgas called Beetle Bomb Records.

‘Fully Slow’ explores the quiet ache of wanting someone who will never want you back—while still building entire fantasies around the possibility, as Heinemann explains: “’Fully Slow’ is about wanting someone who you know deep down will never want you back, but still fantasizing that they do. I’ve always been very prone to pointless intense crushes that remain completely internalized. I can construct a full storyline about what might happen and never do a single thing about it.”
