Born from Riot Grrrl, VENUS GRRRLS are an alternative rock band from Leeds. From twinkling synth motifs to raspy guitar lines, the girls present the dark yet empowering discourse surrounding their own synergistic experiences. Seeing someone you care about manipulated, demeaned, and have their self-esteem crushed by a narcissistic individual can evoke a sense of helplessness and frustration. ‘Liar Liar’ is written from the abuser’s grip, but encourages the idea that people can reclaim their autonomy, rediscover their worth, and ultimately, forge a path towards renewed emotional well-being and empowerment. The band say, “‘Liar Liar’ took some time to finish, both lyrically and instrumentally. The topic, often very personal and contextual was something I wanted to make sure was adequately represented despite its vast nature. The idea was that the ‘narrator’ of the song has become aware of the dynamic of another relationship, and that it isn’t necessarily a good dynamic. Spotting patterns of emotional manipulation and abuse, the narrator seeks not only to empower the victim but to let the perpetrator know that they’ve figured out what’s happening despite the ‘games’.”

Acclaimed indie R&B singer, songwriter Celine Love shares the gorgeously cinematic music video for her new single ‘Gold Plated Tears’. The track is taken from her upcoming new EP Colouring In, out on October 26. Following the release of her breezy, summer single ‘Candy Eyes’, the new single slows the pace down and showcases Celine’s love for indie and folk music. With a haunting guitar riff at its core, Celine’s gorgeously sultry vocals take centre stage. Lyrically, it explores situationships that you find yourself pouring too much of yourself into. She says, “I am a sad guitar girl at heart and find that I get to be me truest as an artist when writing with an instrument in my hand. My love for Jeff Buckley definitely comes to light in this track through dark and deep metaphors with an emotional and soulful performance. The song is about a situationship I poured far too much of myself into. The first half was written when I was still very confused about it. By the time I recorded the song and wrote the rest of it I was more angry and hurt, which is why the song takes a turn emotionally. The idea behind the ‘gold plated tears’ line was a happy accident because I was simply trying to make the song fit the colour theme of the EP. However once I wrote that line, it shaped the meaning of the track. Tears were spilled because of the sadness and anger I felt but because I get to create art from my experience they became valuable. Plated in gold. I can only hope the listener is inspired to be true to their emotions. This is one of the most honest songs I’ve ever written, and I especially struggle writing about people who have hurt me. If sining or crying along to the track can give anyone some sort of catharsis, then the message has been delivered.”

“Our hostess starts out perfect, but gradually begins to unravel as the song progresses,” says SURVIVAL GUIDE, a.k.a. Emily “Agent M” Whitehurst (former vocalist for punk standouts Tsunami Bomb) about the deranged Stepford Wives treatment for her video for ‘Pie,’ the third single off her fourth full-length electropop Survival Guide album deathdreams, out October 19 via Double Helix Records. The vivid metaphor in the lyrics as a protector (“Let me bubblewrap you / Hide you from his eyes”) begins to reveal itself as she dreads younger women having to endure some of the darker things she’s been through. The song’s origin as a “basic demo” with just a “weird clicky drumbeat, a few bass synths and the vocals” was fleshed out at Mesa, AZ’s Flying Blanket Recording Studio with producer Bob Hoag (Dear and the Headlights, The Ataris, The Format) who added in some various layers in production to make the song shine. “Bob really filled it in with harps, violins, mellotron flutes and so much more, and turned it into this unique song,” she says. “Also, I really love desserts and baking, so I’m excited that I figured out how to make pie such a focus in one of my songs.” “Some of the instrumentation on ‘Pie’ gave it a hint of a 1950s sound, which inspired video director Bryan Heiden and the team at The Motivated Mind Group to create the look and feel of the music video,” she adds on the video’s treatment. “Even though the song isn’t literally about pie” she laughs, “we all wanted to use the imagery of it, so we filmed a cooking show set in the ‘50s. I loved getting to attempt all the different emotions that went into this character. And since I enjoy baking so much, it was super fun to do an exaggerated version of a baking show for the video. It even comes with a few commercial breaks!” The deviant ‘Pie’ video follows in tune with the previous action-packed videos: ‘Lady Neptune’ which follows a narrative driven ‘rise and fall’ type story that features a plot of a character who wants something more out of life, but ends up choosing organized crime,” and the macabre and blood-splattered short film-esque music video for ‘Blood Perfume,’ which stars Em as a deranged serial killer who outsmarts her victims.

London-based newcomer Lola Wild shares her debut single ‘Rendezvous’ via Tip Top Recordings. The single, a pensive indie burner for fans of artists like Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten and Chromatics, is the first to be taken from her forthcoming debut EP. The single is accompanied by a striking music video featuring showgirl dancer Coco Belle and directed by Jack Satchell and Mars Washington. ‘Rendezvous’ is a retro-tinged ode to pansexuality and sexual fluidity. The story of the single holds a more poignant meaning than the up-beat crooney, Fosse inspired video lets out. Written about two same sex lovers and the social pressures of where they should sit with their sexuality and gender roles, the song recounts Lola’s own experience at the time she began exploring her sexual identity. It details the challenges faced by two friends falling in love and fear of the judgement and stereotypes that came with it. Of her new single, Lola says: “Bob Fosse is one of my biggest idols, he influenced the choreography in the music video. Films like Sweet Charity and Cabaret inspired me to make music in the same way that Fosse made films. He created an entire signature style through embracing insecurities and experiences, ditching emulation and embracing individuality. I never thought that ‘Rendezvous’ would end up turning into a queer love song. It’s loosely based on my own experiences and the stereotypes I faced when exploring my own sexuality.”

Scene Queen has released a new single, ‘Pink Push Up Bra’. “I wanted a song about finally getting the Justice you deserve because I realize that doesn’t happen for a lot of women,” she explains. “I was having a not so great day that ended up turning into one of my new favorite songs. The idea for the song actually came to me in the shower as I was getting ready for the studio session because I was feeling very triggered that day. I was an hour late to the session because of it, but knew it would be a quick write. The whole song top to bottom took about 2.5 hours total to write and record. It’s probably my most rage-filled song and one of my heaviest. I hope anyone that relates gets the Justice they deserve or at least can use it as an outlet for all the complex emotions that go along with the trauma of assault.” [via Dork]

Experimental pop artist Eartheater has released her sixth full-length studio album Powders. The project is available via her own label, Chemical X, and features the previously released singles ‘Pure Smile Snake Venom’ and ‘Chop Suey.’ The latter is a blissed-out cover of System of a Down’s nu-metal classic. Producers and contributors on Powders include Yves Rothman, Sega Bodega, Lecx Stacy, Casey MQ, Elliott Kozel, Tony Seltzer, Luis Aponte, Isaiah Barr, Sammy, and Kiri. Powders arrives alongside a video for the album track ‘Crushing.’ Andrew Thomas Huang, who has previously worked with Björk, FKA twigs, and Kelela, directed the video, which culminates with Eartheater shattering a wine glass with her extraordinary voice. In a statement, Huang says, “The video concept for ‘Crushing’ arose out of a mutual intention between me and Alex [Eartheater] to focus on process instead of results. After long conversations about the themes of chance, entropy and chaos behind Powders, we landed on the idea of breaking a wine glass with Alex’s voice as a simple, powerful performance act. The resulting video is builds to this climax while drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of erotic thrillers of the early 90s, the introspective surrealism of Albrecht Durer’s Melencolia, and the ‘memento mori’ eroding dice collection of the late actor magician Ricky Jay exhibited at the Museum of Jurassic Technology. Ultimately, ‘Crushing’ is a portrait of the artist as an observer contemplating the unraveling universe both in the external world and in the crashing inner depths of the heart.” [via The FADER]

Sadness & Complete Disappointment have released the second instalment of their forthcoming GBH EP. The ‘B’ of the EP, ‘BARB’, is out now. Says drummer and lead vocalist Esmee Baker, “Everyone thinks this song is about someone called Barb. And I am happy to let them believe that. BUT alas, it is not. My grandmother’s name was Barbara though – she changed it to sound more English – yuck. BACK TO THE SONG – this one is simultaneously about wanting to fuck someone’s brains out (not grandma), but also knowing they are a terrible person. And then it’s also about how, no matter how we wile away our mortal hours, we are all on the slow march to the grave (like grandma).” As is becoming the band’s signature move, a delicate and atmospheric overture of falsetto vocals gives way to a magnificent riff-edged finale.

Girli has released a new video for ‘Matriarchy’. The single follows her 2023 EP why am I like this?, and arrives to coincide with a headline tour of North America. She says of the track: “I wrote ‘Matriarchy’ about sapphic relationships and how they feel like an act of rebellion towards the patriarchy. Women are taught that they exist for the male gaze, so when women love women, it’s like putting a massive middle finger up to the homophobic, transphobic, misogynist, patriarchal society we live in and saying “f**k you, I exist and I’m gonna have fun”. Existing in the female gaze feels so liberating. When I’m in love with a woman, it feels like we’re rewriting the rules of society and creating our own brand-new world.” Of the video, she adds: “I wanted to create a dreamy her-storical matriarchal world ruled by sapphics, set in a forgotten era of the past. Last year, the impossible-to-categorize New Jersey artist 070 Shake released her album You Can’t Kill Me. This year, Shake appeared on RAYE’s massive UK pop hit ‘Escapism’ and on Christine And The Queens’ ‘True Love,’ and her sampled voice popped up on the Fred again.. banger ‘Danielle (Smile On My Face).’ Right now, Shake is touring American stadiums as Coldplay’s opening act. She’s got another new LP in the works, and she’s just dropped its first single. The new 070 Shake song ‘Black Dress’ is a banger. Shake recorded the track with her longtime collaborator Dave Hamelin and with Johan Lenox, a producer who’s done a lot of work with Metro Boomin. Shake has been performing ‘Black Dress’ live all year. It’s a ghostly, pretty song with heavy, churning guitars, blurry synths, and trap 808s — the kind of thing that might happen if the Deftones tried to make a Future song, or vice versa. The song’s Noah Lee-directed video starts out with Shake stuck in a tree, hanging from her parachute, with the wreckage of a crashed plane strewn on the ground around her. Jockstrap have shared a fun new video for their song ‘Greatest Hits.’ In the video a celebrity trial between two pop stars plays out in full, from being caught by paparazzi as they enter to the drama unfolding inside the court. Cameos in the video include Jamie xx, Don Letts, John Foley, and Princess Julia. Director Aidan Zamiri, a regular collaborator of FKA twigs, says: “I think Jockstrap are one of the most exciting bands in the world and I’m stoked we were able to make this video together. We wanted this to have a bit of a reflection on the time we live in now, whilst still having a sense of humour about it. Georgia and Taylor are geniuses, and I was so grateful to explore this mad story with them. Black Honey are back with news of their third album A Fistful of Peaches, and have shared new single ‘Heavy’ to accompany the announcement. ‘Heavy’ is teamed with a video directed by and starring Drag Race UK’s Dakota Schiffer, and will appear on Black Honey’s forthcoming album with last month’s ‘Out of My Mind’ single and August’s ‘Charlie Bronson’. Lead vocalist Izzy Phillips says of the single, “We wrote this song the day I found out the founder of our fan club passed away from Covid-19. We were talking about the weight of grief and the way it holds you down, about the parallels between grief and depression. The weight of mental illness and how it brings you a deeper understanding of grief. There’s always a glimmer of light though and I love how Heavy has that kind glitter darkness. It’s in my nature to become co-dependant and I think in this song I’m reaching for someone to help me climb back out. I talk a bit about the never-ending story as it was my first dialog with death and depression as a child. When she’s not co-fronting Nice Biscuit, you can catch Grace Cuell making some cool sounds as Baby Cool, who returns with new single and music video ‘Poison’ ahead of her debut album Earthling on the Road to Self Love, set for a February 2023 release. A breezy slice of indie-pop meets psych-folk with just a dash of alt-country, ‘Poison’ takes the listener on an effortless, floating journey through it’s guitar twangs, relaxed rhythm section and Cuell’s smokey, entrancing vocals. Explaining the inspiration behind the song, Cuell says “I wrote this song as a playful way to move through the feelings of rejection that can surface after a break up. yunè pinku is 19-year-old Irish Malaysian-Londoner Asha Yunè, who debuted earlier this year with Bluff, an EP that bent the past three decades of rave culture to her own will. Now, she returns with a new song called ‘Fai Fighter,’ which digs deeper into her feelings and comes out howling. ‘Fai Fighter’ begins with a synth riff worthy of any ’80s pop hit and marries it to a four-on-the-floor beat that stays stomping throughout. Yunè’s vocals are chopped up and scattered across the chorus, leaving her to get her message across in the verses. Her lyrics mix the macabre with the every day to amusing effect. “My head just severed,” she sings at one point before undercutting the drama with a well timed, “Oh babe, whatever.” The song comes with a video that — and you may detect a theme here — features the producer and artist wielding a sword as she poses for the camera. There’s a chaotic nature to the visual that feels in tune with the song, featuring nods to her Irish heritage and Celtic witches. “’Fai Fighter’ is a sort of homage to the chaos of vulnerability,” yunè tells The FADER. “I imagined it existing in a metaverse arena or a futuristic realm of some sorts. I think for me I struggle to articulate the meaning of this track because it’s much more of a feeling than a specific word. Creating tracks that feel both catchy and feeling honest and vulnerable seems to be second nature for Madisyn Gifford, an artist who’s lush pop sound continues to earn her plaudits both for its creative potency and her unerring level of consistency. HALFLIVES have released a new music video. The new music video, for the track ‘sorry mom x,’ is the brand new single from the French melodic alternative rock band and follows on from their last single, ‘Dynamite,’ which was released back in April. Speaking about the new single, vocalist Linda Battilani says, “the writing of sorry mom was incredibly natural and fast. I started singing on a guitar riff and the lyrics were somehow immediately right. I was particularly inspired by how I was feeling on the moment and it quickly became a stream of consciousness. Having recently announced their new album, Emerald Sea, is set for release June 17 via Joyful Noise Recordings, New York-based audiovisual project Sound of Ceres are sharing the second glimpse of the record with their new single and video ‘Sunray Venus’ directed by Matthew Maddox. Speaking about new track ‘Sunray Venus’, Ryan Hover of Sound of Ceres said “A song of nascent mind’s curiosity. Venus Caelestis, the morning star, has left the cradle of the void to climb sea-crags and delve in grottos for the flame spied from afar, a flicker beneath the waves, the deep wish of the unknown to be known.” On the visuals, director Matthew Maddox said “Listening to the song and speaking with K and Ryan, an image of a visitor to this planet popped into my mind. Daily Harvest is a plant-based food company and to celebrate Earth Month, they’ve teamed up with Kelis to make a new song titled ‘Feed Them’. The new track is teamed with a video filmed at Kelis’ California farm, and features on the Daily Harvest: Eat The Solution EP with other songs from Kyla Imani, Shuba and Damoyee. Now, they’ve shared a video for their latest single, ‘orange juice.’ In the video, the pair pretend to be adults and call up a school to have their humanoid orange friend released early. Wale says Jerry Seinfeld helped clear samples to bring 2010’s More About Nothing to streaming ‘orange juice’ is a slow-burner, opening with mellow chords before soft guitar plucks gently rock the song back and forth. “Like you best with words unsaid,” Savannah coos. “Can we just watch the time slowly go? You know I’m hung on this reality.” “When creating ‘orange juice’ we wanted to write a song that was as colorful as possible,” the duo said about the song in a press release. “Lyrically the song touches on making the ultimate unexpected fantasy out of something as simple as a comedown from a night out. Melbourne trio Telenova return with glorious new single ‘Why Do I Keep You?’. The three-piece made their bow in 2021, with their silken, studied alt-pop becoming the tastemakers’ pick. Hailed for greatness, new single ‘Why Do I Keep You?’ is genuinely wonderful pop song, full of intrigue, mystery, and a glorious melodic touch. Worth aligning alongside mid 90s guitar pop melancholy, it’s also shot through with a brilliant white light, presenting a solution amid the darkness. A song about love pushing you to the edge, Telenova sing: “I kissed the ground before you, I cut my eyes out for you, restless, blinded by my love…oh why do I keep you?” Angeline Armstrong directs the colourful, super-chic video, with tightly wound choreography from Zoe Marsh. Laufey returns with new single ‘Everything I Know About Love’. Out now, it further blends jazz tropes with her exquisite songwriting, with the Icelandic-Chinese artist chasing magical highs. Transforming everyday feelings into something remote and inspired, the single is marked by her painterly touch. ‘Everything I Know About Love’ reaches towards some inspired truth, and while failing to get there relishes in the journey. Laufey comments… “This song is about all the magical things that I was told love was like but I’ve never gotten to experience. I’ve tried many times but fail every time. 070 Shake is finally coming back with her sophomore album. YOU CAN’T KILL ME is due out this spring via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Recordings, and now, the singer has shared the project’s lead single, ‘Skin and Bones.’ ‘Skin and Bones’ is simultaneously a banger and a slow jam that incorporates 070 Shake’s signature blend of hip-hop, soul, and danceable pop. The track documents a clandestine love affair that seems to be slipping through the cracks: “Skin and bones under the covers/ Kept our love undercover/ Nonchalant, very subtle/ Tryin’ not to step on the puddle,” 070 Shake sings over spacey production. The Noah Lee-directed music video for ‘Skin and Bones’ is a surreal, cinematic trip, taking 070 Shake and her cohort of co-stars throughout various locations until she arrives at an empty auditorium for a shocking conclusion. Back in February, we heard the first new PinkPantheress appearance on record since last fall’s breakthrough mixtape To Hell With It when, along with Lil Uzi Vert and Shygirl, she appeared on Mura Masa’s ‘bbycakes.’ Now PinkPantheress has her own new single out; once again it’s a superstar collaboration, and once again Mura Masa is involved. ‘Where You Are’ teams PinkPantheress with the omnipresent WILLOW, who brings the same dark and angsty TikTok-rock energy to the track that she supplied for Camila Cabello’s ‘psychofreak.’ The new song, co-produced by PinkPantheress, Mura Masa, and Skrillex, is like a more haunted version of the to hell with it highlight ‘Just For Me.’ In a press release, PinkPantheress writes, “i had a lot of fun writing this song. it took loads of attempts to get it right but this is probably my proudest work to date, and i’m super happy for everyone to hear it.” [via Stereogum]

Sunflower Thieves have shared their new EP Someone To Be There For which is released with their latest single and video for ‘Grown Out Of You’. The EP sees Sunflower Thieves exploring themes of self-discovery and growth, navigating and reflecting on the past as well as looking towards the future as they touch upon friendship, relationships, personal growth and loss along the way. All of which is delivered by the duo in their unique way as they release a body of work which is all at once warming, reflective, honest and authentic. Released with the EP is focus track, ‘Grown Out Of You’ which is the duo’s latest track offering, inspired by the nostalgia and curiosity of returning home and seeing their childhood friends moving on with their lives, in a different direction and being happy for them from a distance. The childhood nostalgia of the track is brought to life as the duo feature in the accompanying visual set at a village hall kids’ party where they are seen to be disconnected from the other party guests who are enjoying traditional party games. The video concludes with Sunflower Thieves accepting that they’ve grown out of their past friendships which means they can find contentment and happiness for their friends from a distance. Speaking on the new track, the duo added “You forget life goes on while you’re away but when you come back expecting things to have remained, it’s bittersweet but also easy to accept that things have changed and that you’ve grown apart from those you once knew so well.”

After making history as one of Coachella’s first Indian-origin performing artists, Raveena is back with the psychedelic music video for ‘Love Overgrown.’ Starring model Salem Mitchell, the duo catch themselves in the midst of a passionate relationship with an ultra-saturated futuristic landscape as the backdrop. Rocking Euphoria-inspired makeup in the form of ample face jewels and graphic silver eyeliner, Mitchell and the R&B and soul songstress embrace and fight, while wearing Bollywood-esque midriff-baring ensembles. At one point, the pair morph into technicolor points when they lock lips. Featured on her sophomore album, Asha Awakening, Raveena sings, “I don’t need your apologies/I don’t need any waterfall/I don’t need midnight beg and call, no/You love a big reaction/You said it feels more passionate/You love my anger, you said it turns you on/You know that’s wrong, hey.” [via Hypebae]

Music creator Anna Sofia showcases her talent for storytelling in her brand new single ‘Cruel World’. This is the third offering this year from the Toronto-based songstress, and showcases people who will do anything for power, ignoring the consequences that come with it. She reveals her realization that the world is a harsh place when you’re living as if you’re the only one in it. The visual for the track focuses on the same physical and mental confines present in the ‘No. 5’ visual, but this time including experiments from the outside world. Part of a larger, upcoming film project from Anna, the video leaves fans questioning what’s next for Anna. Will she make it out? This will all be continued in Anna’s upcoming debut EP, LET ME OUT I’M FREE! which will be arriving May 19 via Mismatched Socks Presents. Anna Sofia on the process of creating ‘Cruel World’: “At the time of writing this song, I was in a position in my career where I felt I was being treated as a product by the people around me. A bunch of money and power-hungry business people, using me as another stepping stone to their success. This inspired me to use this concept that I was already very eager to speak about, but turn it into some crazy fictional fairytale. We ended up making each verse their own separate story that, in the end, speak on the same life lesson.
