Ahead of the release, Abigail has revealed a final glimpse into the project with the album’s focus track and video ‘Flowers in my Hair.’ The track features acclaimed indie-folk band Great Lake Swimmers’ frontman Tony Dekker and is a sunny acapella singalong that acts as an ode to summertime.

Lapell expands, “‘Flowers In My Hair’ is a summery song about skinny dipping and lying around sunbathing, covered in flowers, and feeling carefree and in love – or, at least, in love enough for the moment.” Recorded live-off-the-floor in a 200-year-old church, the earworm captures joyful, off-the-cuff harmonies that float across claps and layered stomps, infused with the natural reverb of the unique recording space.

A love song for both weddings and funerals, ‘Count on Me’ explores the passage of time – celebrating the rhythms of a shared life and coming to terms with its brevity. Through the track, melodic strums breeze across enchanting harmonies offered by Lapell and Tony Dekker of Great Lake Swimmers as lyrics promise an earnest vow to a loved one. “I started writing ‘Count on Me’ for my sister’s wedding and finished it in time for her first anniversary,” Abigail says. “It’s a song for me that evokes marriages or funerals or other life ceremonies.”

The scrapbook style video, directed by Krpie, brings the romantic track to life through an array of collage, animations, and rotoscoping, piecing together images of lovers throughout different eras of time.

An evocative collection of original love songs, the album balances upbeat earworms with elegiac ballads, ultimately emerging as an earnest celebration of commitment. Anniversary was recorded at the 200-year-old St. Mark’s Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario and was produced with Great Lake Swimmers’ Tony Dekker, who helped shape the project’s spooky, resonant sound while lending his voice to a few spellbinding duets.

Alongside the announcement, Abigail Lapell also shared the album’s lead single and video, ‘Anniversary Song.’ Recorded live with her band in a 200-year-old church, the track features an in-house harpsichord along with drums, bass, electric guitar and layers of doubled vocals and harmonies, brought together with lyrics that celebrate the syntax and symbolism of commitment.

Lapell says, “‘Anniversary Song’ was inspired by the idea of mashing-up traditional anniversary gifts (cotton, leather, diamonds) with the periodic table of elements (iron, carbon, silver) to celebrate the physical and symbolic bonds of togetherness.” A play on romantic “chemistry,” ‘Anniversary Song’ highlights some of the album’s recurring dualities: literal and symbolic, earthly and otherworldly.
