Vocalist, guitarist and production mastermind Claire Sutton says: “Ultimately this song is about peer pressure and being led astray on a wild night out. It’s about struggling not to give into temptation and resisting letting go but gradually being swayed into it and realising you can let go of responsibility and accountability – at least for one night. It was written while watching a TV series called Sweet Pea, where the main character was swept up into psychopathy and murdering people that inconvenienced her and it was incredibly (and disturbingly) empowering to her. As I was writing it, I realised the song was this giant analogy for vampires and other creatures of the night who thrive when the sun goes down.”

The ominous soundscape that envelopes ‘A Night Like This’ wends its way between siren sounds, 80’s-esque pulsing electronics, creepy whispered lyrics, Sutton’s pure melodic vocal, danceable guitar parts and riffs that feel they could pierce your skin as easily as a vampire’s fangs. The accompanying music video for the track is in-keeping with its blood-sucking theme. As Sutton says, “Being a die hard Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan and the song being an analogy for vampires, pretty much as soon as it was written I was having visions of doing some sort of spoof of the tv show. But the song is so pop and very Lady Gaga inspired so it was also screaming out for some serious moves to happen. This obviously led to us going on a mission to try and tie all that together. I’m pretty sure the boys hate me when I come up with these outlandish ideas for our videos but I promised them they didn’t have to try and learn the dance and I guess I won them over with that hahaha. It would have been a complete mess if it wasn’t for Beth Cooper’s last minute choreography skills and pulling the team she had together to make the dream happen. We absolutely adore how it came out. It was really hard work, lots of fun and totally worth it – but I won’t be reaching for the headset mic any time soon. I shall stick to playing my guitar!”

Alongside this landmark announcement for the band, All Ears Avow have unveiled a new single, which appears on the forthcoming full-length. The riff-propelled ‘Young Horror’ refers to the album’s title and is out today with a music video. Vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, producer and all-round mastermind behind All Ears Avow, Claire Sutton says: “This song is about the freedom of youth and the position it gives you to make up your own mind about the world. But then you’re progressively gaslit by society to play the game, comply and become yet another sheep lining the pockets of the rich; all the while simultaneously being brainwashed into looking the other way. I loved the notion of how we identify a child who resists authority as a ‘Young Horror’ and the double meaning behind the horrors of this earth that we recognise when we are young, but turn a blind eye to as we age.”

Sutton wrote, produced, mixed and mastered Horrors, which she performed with her bandmates at her own facility Western Audio Studios. “Things happened that we didn’t expect,” says Jake Willcock (guitar) of the experience of recording ‘Horrors’, continuing: “like Claire screaming on one of the songs, which we never thought would be in our wheelhouse. There’s an energy running through the entire album that we never let drop. But because it’s a bigger record than anything we’ve done before, there’s room for ebb and flow, and that’s allowed us to stretch out creatively and really put our passion on display. The album explores themes of societal control, brainwashing, obsession, incompetence, self-confidence, and hopelessness. We realised it was about the horrors of life – both external and internal – and how, in many ways, life feels like one big horror show we’re all battling through. Calling the record Horrors summed everything up.”

She says: “’Dark Skies’ is probably one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written. It came from a place of pure anxiety—specifically the feeling of being in the middle of a panic attack and trying to make sense of it in real time. There’s a kind of chaos that takes over your body and mind, where even breathing feels uncertain, and I wanted the music to reflect that intensity.

“Lyrically, it’s fragmented and frantic, because that’s exactly how those moments feel. Lines like ‘Where did my lungs go, will I just float no?’ are pulled straight from that spiraling headspace. It’s messy and uncomfortable, but honest.

“Musically, we leaned into a darker, more aggressive sound while still keeping those melodic pop elements we love. It’s got that rocky edge that lets me push vocally and emotionally—like I’m physically working through the tension of the song while performing it.

“For me, ‘Dark Skies’ is about acknowledging how scary it can be when your own mind turns against you—but also how cathartic it is to express that fear out loud. It doesn’t fix it, but it helps. I hope it connects with anyone who’s ever felt overwhelmed and needed a moment of release.”

Sutton says “’Bird On A Wire’ is a song that practically wrote itself in the space of a short afternoon. I found myself in a headspace of just feeling rather sick of what the human race – our species that’s meant to be so intelligent – was capable of. Maybe I’d gotten particularly caught up watching the news that morning. It was everything from the absolute atrocities going on across the world, the wars, mass murder, school shootings, climate change, animal cruelty, human cruelty – and how so often we just look the other way and keep going about our business as if we don’t even notice our world is on fire around us. This song doesn’t come from a place of self virtue, more of shock at the entire situation, guilt and powerlessness.

“I love the metaphor of a ‘bird on a wire’ to encompass what this song is about, because most of us are all so safe on our perch, but if we were to take one step in the wrong direction it could have catastrophic consequences. It means, however good we’ve got it, we should be minding our actions. We are all complicit and actions have consequences.”
