Her eponymous debut EP, released in 2022, was the result of an experimental collaboration with jungle producer Simply Dread. Tophill has continued to work with Simply Dread for her new single, ‘Ultramess’, a “collaboration of artistic-differences” resulting in shimmery electro-pop which ripples with restless energy. ‘Ultramess’ is an alluring snapshot of a cynical romance. “It’s not quite a love song,” Tophill says. “It’s more an ode to the wilful ignorance that leads us to love, and the chaos that follows.”

Tophill’s writing is candid, confessional and refreshingly light, and there’s a mischievous streak that peppers her songs and tempers her occasional intensity. “I’m processing a lot of past mistakes through my music,” she says. “While anticipating future fuck ups which I’m sure will be just as fun to make.”

Drawn to the idea of collaborating with a producer who works outside of the musical world she usually inhabits, Bar Pandora began working on her debut EP with jungle producer Simply Dread. The result is deliciously off-kilter yet melodious alt-pop, playfully sewn together from the offcuts of personal experience; field recordings, journal entries and improvised fragments which bop along to a rich undercurrent of harmonic synths, guitars and dynamic beats.

New single ‘Vice Vice Vice’ is an unapologetically catchy pop anthem. “The song is a remonstrance to a neglectful lover. It’s about that push and pull you feel when you’re putting everything into a relationship and still being taken for granted,” says Bar Pandora. “It’s a crazy-making situation that I know too well, so it’s fun to be able to sing it out loud along to a pop beat and shout a bit at the end,” she continues.

Of her new single, Tophill says: “This song is about the feeling that as a woman you grow up so acutely aware that the world is looking at you and judging you that you begin to feel creatively paralysed by it. It’s a complex thing – but I think back to my years growing up and realise that it was such a powerful invisible force in my life, the involuntary sense of commodity that comes with being in a female body.”
