First teasing new song ‘Racer’ in January this year while opening for Sugababes on their Australian tour, the anthemic track hears them going full turbo with their electronic soundscape and slick pop melodies. Lyrically, a recognition of the power that resides within their bond as a trio of best friends, ‘Racer’ elevates the ephemeral joy of the club into a profound expression of sisterhood.

Of the song Blusher explain, “Being a Racer means being your own stunt person, the main character of your own life. It’s being the person to start the dance floor while the rest of the party is worrying about what people think”.

They add, “The song was written the morning after we went to a secret rave in downtown LA. We danced under a bridge and watched as people lit off fireworks from its highest point. The next day, sleep deprived and inspired, we bottled that feeling of euphoria and Racer was born. We want Racer to be the song that people turn up loud when they’re feeling sad or stressed, that helps them strut into the most unfazed, unstoppable, fastest version of themselves. It’s ultimately about our friendship and how we bring out the Racer in each other.”

A buzzy, sparkling crush confession, the song is full of the fizzy excitement and energy you carry around with you when you’re completely obsessed with someone. Starting in Melbourne, the song was finished whilst the band were on tour in the US, then mixed in London, whilst the visualiser was shot in Tokyo.

Blusher say: “We channelled the feeling of our first crushes, a shimmering Tokyo skyline, and Britney Spears riding a motorbike through the sky in the ‘Toxic’ video. It’s done a whole lap of the world with us, and we couldn’t be more excited to share it. We hope it leaves people radiating with energy and inspires someone to yell their crush confession over the music on the dancefloor.”

Speaking on the creation of the new single, Blusher share, “‘24 Hours in Paris’ is our bittersweet darling. We started writing it after a D&M (deep and meaningful) about the times that we’d done the “run away from your sadness” overseas trip ~ where you find yourself in a beautiful place, expecting it’ll heal you instantly, but really, you just end up eating a croissant in a gutter and overthinking.

“Sonically, it feels like a new colour of the Blusher palette – a different side to our sound that we’re super excited to share with people. We love the idea of taking a left turn from our last single, ‘Accelerator’. We want our music to be your soundtrack on the dance floor, but also for the ride home in the Uber, when you’re staring out the window with a single tear rolling down your cheek.”

Speaking on the creation of the new single, Blusher shares; “‘Accelerator’ feels like Blusher with the saturation turned up to 200%. ‘Accelerator’ is a big budget action movie, it’s a late-night highway chase, it’s James Bond in drag.

“It was our first day working with producer Donny Bravo. We knew of his work on the Disclosure album (which we’ve played in our DJ sets a lot) and were super excited to work with him. We’d been out late the night before to see a Tove Lo + Associanu DJ set, so we started the day with a lot of coffee, feeling really inspired to make something hard-hitting and dancey. We were so caffeinated, buzzing with intense creative energy.

“Our process when writing is to take turns with a handheld mic and sing whatever melodies come into our head without overthinking it. Jade got on the mic and immediately sang the line “sometimes I feel like I want to jump out of a helicopter” – from then we knew it was going to be a slightly unhinged day (in the best way.)’

“We spent the rest of the day jumping around the room (literally), saying yes to the ideas that made us laugh, and just committing to the fast-paced feeling. We have so much fun together in the studio and you can really hear that come through in this song. We’re grateful to Donny for accepting our chaotic vibes with open arms and matching that energy in production with gritty basslines and pulsing synths.

“‘Accelerator’ is about the feeling of turning the intensity up on life – leaning into the chaos and embracing the feeling of racing in the fast lane without really knowing where you’re going. It’s also about jumping headfirst into a feeling, and being the kind of person who can’t help but push down the accelerator.”

They’ve just announced their debut EP, aptly titled Should We Go Dance? – set for release on July 14 via Atlantic Records/Warner Music Australia. The news comes alongside the release of their brand new single, ‘Backbone’ – a powerful anthem about the aftermath of heartbreak – and ahead of the trio’s international debut at Brighton’s The Great Escape Festival. The trio have also been announced as special guests, joining Swedish pop powerhouse Tove Lo on her upcoming Australian headline shows having already supported Aurora earlier in the year.

Speaking on ‘Backbone’, and how it came from the whiplash and aftermath of a breakup, Blusher explain how they wanted to “sing about the way that heartbreak can strengthen and empower friendships. It’s a fiery, energetic love song to the friends who have your back through it all. Backbone is aptly named, its themes of power, confidence and deep friendship are the foundation of our band.”

The new single is accompanied by the music-video-quality-visualiser which features Blusher in their alter-ego ‘choose your fighter’ personas. Speaking on the concept behind this, they explain; “when we first wrote the song, we had visions of 80s workout routines/Charlie’s Angels/a “choose your fighter” moment in an anime video game. It made us think about what our video game characters would be. We saw ourselves channelling an element in each of our verses. Miranda’s verse is powered by fire and lit by red brake lights, Jade’s, a watery moment with a tear filled champagne glass, whilst Lauren’s air bending bridge propels you to the dance floor and breathes new life into you.”
