Following the immense reception of previous singles ‘Like Me’, ‘Lying’, and ‘Crumbling’, the eclectic Catlea is on a strictly upward trajectory. Their fourth single ‘Bones’ is out today as the lead single from their upcoming Bones EP—which includes the three previously songs—in support of the full-length Language Barrier album debut on January 17.

The singer-songwriter has truly defied stylistic restrictions in ‘Bones’ by effortlessly blending genres in a creative concoction. With indie-pop foundations, a lush infusion of soul and R&B, and a hint of disco all wrapped in an undeniable groove, there is an expansive landscape to explore in ‘Bones’.

The track breaks down the complexities and contradictions found in a shared, universal experience: breakups. Often laced with emotional upheaval and feelings of isolation, ‘Bones’ not only opens a conversation about the confusion of a breakup (wondering what went wrong and when, where, why, and how), but broadens the dialogue surrounding the aftermath. In particular, Catlea’s lyricism admits to the frustrating duality of not yet being over someone but growing tired of talking about it.

Processing a breakup can be tiresome and heavy, but Catlea has made this an easier experience for listeners. Through Catlea’s transparent and authentic songwriting, ‘Bones’ offers a sense of relatability amongst the prescribed loneliness – a shoulder to cry on. When delivered by Catlea’s honeyed vocals, ‘Bones’ becomes both a beautiful confessional and a therapeutic release.

By allowing an insight into their vulnerabilities, Catlea provides a safe space for listeners. Their music shines with the simplicity that it’s okay not to be okay, for things to not quite make sense. In ‘Bones’, Catlea’s answer to the heartbreak is steady and balanced: “I may be lost right now, but I’m learning – and ready to move on.”
