“’Southern Youth’ is a tale of the classic angsty teenager to homesick adult pipeline,” Slater explains. “Bournemouth is a beautiful seaside town, but I think it’s easy as a teen to feel trapped in your hometown, where the new bands rarely come and play, the winters leave the town almost deserted, and the nickname is ‘God’s waiting room’. Since I was sixteen I’ve been pretty desperate to live in a city, and I moved to Manchester as soon as I got the chance. After experiencing life in the city, I suppose in a lot of ways I feel more grateful to have grown up there now than I did when I left.”

“I wrote ‘UGLY’ after watching a documentary on Netflix called Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy, which looks at where ‘away’ actually is when we throw things out,” Slater explains. “The song centres around this almost religious compulsion we have towards consumerism. Our ads are full of commandments, ‘buy now’, ‘don’t miss out’, and we’re promised heaven in the form of status and wealth if we follow the right path.”

Slater continues, “I frantically list products and capitalist tokens throughout the song to mirror the never-ending frenzy of the world we live in. I wanted it to feel chaotic, with a big sense of release in the chorus, something people can throw their hands up to and let go of at shows.”

“‘War Crimes’ is a really important song to me. It feels like the first real protest song that I’ve ever written and an evolution of the musical style developed throughout my first two EPs”, Slater explains.

Commenting further, she expresses, “Lyrically, it’s an ode to all those who feel betrayed and disillusioned by the UK Labour government, whose ideals have become increasingly right-wing since Keir Starmer’s election. I wrote the song after watching the genocide of Palestinians being broadcast to the world, and feeling a deep sense of helplessness as our leaders continued to dismiss the problem and enable the oppressors. Playing it live and watching the audience get emotional with me has been really powerful. I can only hope it keeps sparking conversations and encouraging people to think critically about the world we live in.”

Following her recent UK and EU support tour with Alessi Rose, and the release of her acclaimed EP Love Me Please – which housed fan favourites like Fig Tree, Tiny Screens, and Sucker – ‘Harriet’ marks another impressive turning point for Slater. ​​Produced by Shute, Harriet drapes sun-bleached guitars over the quiet ache of romantic jealousy, sharp, shimmering, and just shy of saying too much. Where Normal People made space for what was left unsaid, Slater dares to fill the silence. Her version of Marianne doesn’t wait to be chosen. It’s a tongue-in-cheek take on a love story rewritten.

“’Harriet’ is one of my oldest songs,” Slater shares. “I wrote it at 18 in the worst student halls imaginable, during my first heartbreak. There’ve been so many versions since, but this release feels like a little nod to that girl – like a real ‘I made it’ moment.”

Directed by Bonnie MacRae, the video pays loving tribute to Normal People’s most iconic scenes, recreated with almost obsessive detail – from Connell’s bedroom rebuilt in Streatham to the exact supermarket dress worn by Marianne. “What started as a running joke about me looking like Daisy Edgar-Jones turned into a full-scale recreation of my favourite scenes,” Slater explains. “We were laughing on set when the shots matched perfectly. I’ve never eaten so many ice lollies in my life!”

MacRae, making her directorial debut, adds: “I’ve watched Normal People maybe twelve times, so getting this brief was an actual dream. Chloe and I shared so many of the same references and influences, it made the whole process seamless. To bring ‘Harriet’ to life in this way, with a track that could genuinely sit alongside the original soundtrack, was such a joy!”
