‘She Doesn’t Love Me’ is, in many ways, the core of the album. It is a strident, driving anthem that doesn’t shy away from the pain – and still makes you want to, as Claud sings on the track, put your “beers in the air.”

Claud says, “I love the community I have in America and find so much optimism in people being united in seeking progress. This is a love song for that community.”

Ostensibly an unrequited love song, the track casts America as a toxic girlfriend. That metaphor comes to life in the accompanying music video, which follows Claud through a string of missed dates and unanswered calls before culminating in a sense of comfort and belonging found in community. The final bar scene features cameos from fellow Shelly members Clairo and Josh Mehling as well as Samia, Annie DiRusso, Hank Heaven, Josie Strick, Sammy Steiner, Harrison Allen, and Camille Johnson.

Does everything have to feel so heavy all the time? The 10 songs on Claud’s rich and resplendent third album Me and the Music find the 27-year-old Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter-producer grappling with that question and coming up, triumphantly, with something close to an answer: Things can be heavy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Things can be heavy, but that beer in your hand isn’t—why not hold it aloft for a moment, sing along with the friends surrounding you, forget your troubles for the length of a perfect indie-pop song? 

Co-produced by Claud and John Congleton (Alvvays, St. Vincent), the album marks a milestone in Claud’s evolution as a producer. As encouraged by mentor Jack Antonoff, they take on a more hands-on creative role, crafting a sound that is both expansive and unmistakably their own.

yeule has announced a new LP, softscars, coming out on September 22 via Ninja Tune. It follows 2022’s great Glitch Princess, and features previously released single ‘sulky baby.’ They produced it with Kin Leonn, and Mura Masa and Chris Greatti contributed initial production. About the project, yeule says: “I took the metaphor of the scar to represent each song, and each scar remains soft. Whether you’re healing from emotional trauma or a physical wound, time never heals a scar completely. There’s no more pain, but you can still see the mark afterward. I have a deep feeling that the things my ancestors went through got passed down; there’s some trauma that just sticks. There was always decay and distortion in my life, there’s always been something wrong or ugly. So the scar reminds me that I’m being protected, and I should protect myself.” The newest taste from softscars is double single ‘dazies’ b/w ‘fish in the pool,’ the latter of which is a cover of a piece from Japanese film Hana and Alice. ‘dazies’ contrasts with loud, distorted guitars under wispy vocals. Daphne Guinness releases new single ‘Hip Neck Spine’ via the independent label Agent Anonyme Recordings. Her first new music in three years, ‘Hip Neck Spine’ is lifted from Daphne’s forthcoming new album Sleep, due for release late 2023. It’s accompanied by an official video directed by the visionary photographer and director Nick Knight of SHOWStudio. Layering an art-pop edge to her melding of ‘80s electronica reference points, ‘Hip Neck Spine’ finds Daphne Guinness embracing a new-found immediacy. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the track’s strings scored by all-time great Tony Visconti (who also produced her previous three albums) the title and part of its initial production comes from the construction of samples made by the sound of Guinness’ own hip, neck and spine recorded impromptu during a chiropody session. Says Daphne; “I always put my whole being into everything I do, but in this case I needed to use my body as well as my voice! ‘Hip Neck Spine’ emerged in two takes – it’s a call to have a good time, engaging the body and the beat.” Speaking about the video, Nick Knight says; “When I first heard ‘Hip Neck Spine’ I felt it was a very modern vision but based in futuristic visions from the past. I looked at classic futuristic references such as Metropolis, Man Ray and Grace Jones. We worked with Daphne’s unique and incredible fashion collection to film over 25 iconic looks from great designers such as Alexander McQueen, Chanel and Azzedine Alaïa, all transformative looks creating Daphne a different character for each section of the song.” Daphne adds: “As far as I know this video has the most costume changes of any pop promo ever made! I had to change every 2 – 4 bars throughout the song. It was an exercise in visiting some of my previous incarnations and to work with Alex Fury who bravely ventured into the depths of my archive. Watching it back is great fun – We really cover a lot of ground! It’s an epoch shifting extravaganza in costume – from Metropolis to Marchesa Casati to beyond Blade Runner. There is so much detail you can watch it again and again and still see new things.”

Billie Eilish’s contribution to the Barbie soundtrack is out there in the world. Billie Eilish recorded her new song ‘What Was I Made For?’ with her brother and regular collaborator Finneas. It’s a soft, breathy ballad that seems to take the movie’s plot literally. Eilish sings about being unsure about her purpose in the universe: “Taking a drive, I was an ideal/ Looked so alive, turns out I’m not real/ Just something you paid for.” In the self-directed video, a newly blonde and prim Eilish sits at a desk and pulls out doll versions of her old outfits, but things keep interrupting her: an earthquake, a windstorm, a downpour. Fast rising artist Emei continues her upward trajectory with the reveal of razor sharp alt-pop single, ‘Cynical’. Havanna Winter, the groundbreaking singer, actress and famed TikTok influencer known for her versatility, has released a new music video for her latest single ‘Tornado.’ The track is a reminder to not allow insecurities and false hope, brought on by people who don’t have the best intentions, to throw you off your path. Havanna talks about staying strong and recognizing genuine gestures, so we don’t deter from doing what’s best for ourselves. The video was directed by Éli Sokhn, and produced by Laith Souqi, with creative direction by Anette Winter. The clip takes the viewer back to the movie, ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ equipped with Dorothy (played by Havanna) and her friends on the yellow brick road. Just like the legendary film, Havanna and friends embark on a journey where they are lost and trying to find their way back home. They lean into each other for support and realize that strength in unity is what actually enables them to overcome anything. ‘Tornado’ is a story about a girl who goes on an adventure to get her mind off of her toxic ex-boyfriend. She dreams herself away from her heartbroken reality in California to the land of Oz where she reunites with all her friends who she lost contact with while she lost herself in the toxic relationship. They embark on a journey to find each other and themselves again, as they were separated in the dark times. While catching up on lost time, they learn about building strength and courage together. They are faced with different obstacles along the way with several other toxic dangers, but their friendship and support for each other enables them to realize that even if people aren’t always who they pretend to be, together we are strong and can overcome anything. She says, “This project is close to my heart. Claud, the first artist signed to Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records, has released their sophomore album, Supermodels, which features lead single ‘Every Fucking Time.’ Along with the album’s release, Claud has unveiled a video for the track ‘A Good Thing,’ produced by Claud and Dan Wilson. And guess what? The video stars Paul Rudd as a frazzled postal worker. It also features Claud enacting something like the plot of Weezer’s ‘Undone (The Sweater Song).’ Here’s what Claud had to say about the video, which was filmed in New York and LA and directed by Christina Xing: “Over the last couple months, I’ve revealed the more intimate parts of Supermodels, but now I’m really excited for everyone to hear the windows down radio up moments of my album. Songs like ‘A Good Thing’ and ‘Paul Rudd’ capture an anthemic, everything works out in the end type feeling. That’s why I had to have Paul Rudd in the music video for ‘A Good Thing.’ I met him briefly in passing at a Taylor Swift concert and explained that there was a song on my upcoming album named after him, and he so generously gave me his email asking to hear it. In the email I explained that ‘Paul Rudd’ and many other songs on the record are about me trying to imagine myself as a cool and confident person similar to the types of characters he plays, in contrast to the real-life shy and nervous person I often am. Tessa Violet is back with a new album, MY GOD!. In the ‘BAD BITCH’ music video she wears a vinyl pink gown with two silk trains that attach to her hands, and is attended by a troupe of backup dancers. She is commanding, a “bad bitch,” and an artist who has come into her full bloom. The simpler beats of Bad Ideas have matured into the more complex production and flexible melodies we hear in ‘BAD BITCH,’ and her lyrics, which once journaled her feelings of lostness, insecurity, and fleeting emotions, are now aspirational and confident (“I’m a bad bitch baby, I don’t care”). According to the song, she “used to be a little bitch.” Now, as the cover of MY GOD! shows, she is poised with her hands in prayer, tears of jewels frozen on her cheeks, looking upwards, as golden rays beam from her. She seems ready to be deified, and the album, the recording of her journey, seems to suggest that this is her apotheosis, her culmination, her true coming-of-age. Tessa explains of the track: “I had been on a stretch of writing sad breakup songs, and I was like, okay, enough sad songs. I’m tired of writing about being sad and heartbroken. I want to write about how amazing I am. And at that point, a part of me was like, maybe this could be true, but I was like, what if this is manifesting it. And it was another year and a half until that song came out. Once it was out, I was like, yes, she’s a bad bitch. I wrote ‘BAD BITCH’, because I’m like, fuck yeah. It was a lot about the experience of self within the music industry. When I was first starting out, before ‘Crush’ came out, people in the industry did not get or believe in me. They just didn’t see my potential. And that was fine. I didn’t even take that personally. One time, I had a meeting with a potential manager, and they’re like, what size venues do you want to play? And I was like, arenas. And they’re like, okay, but like realistically. And I was like, okay, I can take that personally, or I can just say you just don’t have the vision to see my potential and that’s fine. Like, why would you? I’m playing to twenty people every day. K-pop girl group (G)I-DLE have released their first-ever English single, titled ‘I Do’. ‘I Do’ is the girl group’s first release in partnership with 88rising. It comes shortly after a new partnership between the Asian-focused music company and the girl group’s label CUBE Entertainment, per Billboard. In the music video for ‘I Do’, the members of (G)I-DLE play an extraterrestrial who crash lands on Earth. She meets a kind stranger who takes her in, and the pair soon fall in love. However, the duo are being chased down by mysterious men in hazmat suits, and are later cornered in a deserted warehouse. In order to save her love, the extraterrestrial uses her magic powers and sacrifices herself. “Don’t you go falling in love / Trust me she’s not the one / She won’t ever love you like I do / Hold you like I do / Know you like I do,” the girl group sing on the chorus of ‘I Do’. London’s Matilda Mann has unveiled the title track of her new EP You Look Like You Can’t Swim. Having spent the last couple of years expanding on her folk influences and delicately crafted soundscapes, the singer-songwriter now lives in her own lane of alternative originality – showing versatility at every turn, while never settling in one style for too long. Her new EP is perhaps her most moving to date – featuring the previously heard ‘The Day I Met You’ and ‘In Plain Sight’. Driven by emotion, it’s intimate and pared back – shining a spotlight on her honest lyrics and soft vocals. Much like the rest of the EP, the title track has been created with a light touch, soft acoustic melodies and folk vulnerability embellished with yearning strings. She has said of the EP: “The songs were all written so sincerely and honest, that I wanted them to be simple and stripped, with the right arrangement, to give the lyrics their moment. North Wales alt-pop quartet HOURGLVSS, made up of best friends Katie Benbow (vocals / keyboard), Sophie May Williams (vocals / keyboard), Rosie Hamilton (guitar) and Lauren James (drums) are the newest infectious girl gang you will want to be a part of. They’ve shared the vibrant new video for their recent infectious single ‘Calling’. The new video was filmed in HOURGLVSS’ renowned rehearsal space, situated within Benbow’s Vintage clothing warehouse. They used a green screen and a borrowed Rolls Royce. “We wanted the main character in the song to have and animated and whimsical feel to keep the video light hearted, so we used our Lipstick Mascot” adds HOURGLVSS. The video sees their lipstick mascot eventually free’d from their dark hole and sadness from persistent calling from friends which is the basis and message of the song. The video is fun and playful, taking inspiration from the likes of Bananarama and concluding with a nod to the film Never Ending Story. Eventually, the lipstick mascot is rescued and joins a magical ride of friendship. ‘Calling’ was written when Katie was going through a bad time. The opening line belts ‘The clothes on the floor they really are piling, she keeps adding more’. Recalling the time she sat looking at the pile of clothes on her floor during a period of depression, she remembers the rest of her bandmates calling her up to check she was okay. “Before HOURGLVSS, I never had a group of solid girlfriends. This is a love letter to all the girls in the band and to all girls and their friends. I had never found a community where I felt I fit in and where you all care about each other, where you can tell something is up with someone and want to check in.” ‘Calling’ is an uplifting slice of alt-pop that takes its cues from the likes of The Cranberries and Cocteau Twins. It’s not only a celebration of friendship and community but also a solidarity anthem for anyone who is feeling overwhelmed, that life is getting on top of them – that they are literally drowning in a pile of clothes. “This is a statement to say, we have been there, and you’re loved.”

Perth-based pop icon Skyuka releases the incredibly catchy track, ‘Michael Cera’. With a blend of indie rock, ’90s fuzz and a touch of humour, this infectious tune will be your favourite bop of the year. ‘Michael Cera’ showcases Skyuka’s unique blend of upbeat pop melodies alongside introspective, witty lyrics. It tells a relatable story of falling for someone who you just can’t seem to escape from, and the frustration that comes with it. It’s a reflection on unrequited love, delivered with Skyuka’s lightheartedness and sass. “When I wrote ‘Michael Cera’ I was listening to a lot of Vampire Weekend and just really enjoying the playfulness of their earlier albums which influenced the writing process of this song. It felt refreshing to write something fun that people could clap and sing along to and have a laugh at, but still had a lot of heart. I was basically telling myself I didn’t want to see this person anymore because of their addictive tendencies…but at the same time I felt like a huge hypocrite as I was clearly addicted to them.”

Eora/Sydney based musician Georgia Mooney is excited to announce her eagerly anticipated debut album Full of Moon, out August 25 via Nettwerk. Georgia treats us to a teaser ahead of her debut album, taking shape as ‘Break It Off’. Pulling inspiration from the theatrical sounds of ABBA and Rufus Wainwright, ‘Break It Off’ is pure high drama, a melodramatic and shamelessly camp take on infatuation ending in pain, fuelled by desperate yearning and stubborn sentimentality. Georgia Mooney shares “it is about being powerless to somebody’s charms. When a relationship is terribly bad for you, but the infatuation is overwhelming. When you’re not receiving enough in return, there is a desperation that the person will have a miraculous epiphany and realise they’re actually madly in love. There is an inability to let go of that hope, to the extent where the only option is to be dumped ruthlessly!” Mooney’s celestial vocals dance above luscious layers of instrumentation: gentle piano, a 70s-esque synth, and shimmering strings, all buoyed by bass and shuffling drums reminiscent of classic 60s pop. The ‘Break It Off’ video sees a dazzling 80s-worthy collaboration with Eora-founded aerobics queens Retrosweat. Devised as “if Pat Benatar made an instructional workout video”, Georgia Mooney sings as a portrait on the wall of a beautiful, surreal set that the trio of dancers perform in. As well as being wonderfully theatrical, it’s also the avenue through which Mooney presents an ode to one of her greatest loves – Benedict Cumberbach. She shares, “It is no secret that I have something of a celebrity crush on Benedict Cumberbatch. I do not suffer from celebrity worship syndrome in general, nor do I ever get star struck, I cannot explain the spell that was cast on me when first I clapped eyes and ears on Cumberbatch. Surely something to do with the rather lovely, clever-sounding accent and the period costume attire…When I wrote the lyric “you’re not a patch on Benedict Cumberbatch”, I gave myself the rest of the day off.”

This was my first time directing, which was scary, but came easily because my vision for this song was so strong. The video wouldn’t have been the same without my co-star, Grace Kuhlenschmidt. We met on the internet early in the pandemic. I was a big fan of her comedy, and I watched every single video she posted. We quickly became friends and have been wanting to collaborate for a while, and I wrote this video concept with her in mind. ‘Judy Law’ is the new single and video from Norwegian band Fieh. This band are overwhelmingly guilty of consistently delivering outstanding future soul music. Behind the song title is lead singer Sofie Tollefsbo‘s alter ego, Judy Law, a lawyer living in designer clothes – an entirely different lifestyle from that of a hard-working musician. The single revolves around the desire for a better life or simply to be someone else. Although the theme represents self-realisation, it has a dreamy quality that suggests wishful thinking. The lyrics are poetic and engaging, like the dark stuttering groove beneath. This video embodies Fieh’s playful creativity, where humour is always a part of the mix. [via Scandinavian Soul]

hemlocke springs first emerged last year with ‘girlfriend,’ an addictive, high-energy earworm that promptly blew up on TikTok. She followed that up with ‘stranger danger!’ in January and now she has dropped another new song. ‘sever the blight’ begins in melodramatic fashion with springs situating herself in a dank basement tied up by the ankles. It’s not all doom and gloom, however, with the song powered by a sleek synth-laden beat courtesy of BURNS, the EDM-adjacent producer who contributed heavily to Lady Gaga’s Chromatica. The track’s playful tone is matched by a medieval-themed video that imagines a world in which springs drinks wine from a goblet, dances wildly in her turret and stages sword fights for entertainment. Innovative Faroese American songstress Marianna Winter has released the video for her single, ‘Consequences’. Staring down the barrel of Marianna’s smoking gun, listeners are invited to a secret warehouse to watch the Faroese singer play the baddy. Donning a suit like Samuel L. Jackson in the cult classic film Pulp Fiction, she fires round after round of catchy hooks and funky beats with lethal accuracy. And we quickly learn that this is Marianna’s world, and that there will be repercussions.

Source Music girl group LE SSERAFIM have released their first-ever studio album Unforgiven and a music video for its lead single of the same name. The new title track features legendary record producer Nile Rodgers of disco band Chic. In the new visual for ‘Unforgiven’, the members of LE SSERAFIM don cowboy hats and perform the track from a Western-themed bar and later, a helipad, singing and rapping to the energetic single. Isle of Wight alt-rockers Coach Party are celebrating the announcement of their debut album Killjoy with the release of their new single, ‘All I Wanna Do Is Hate.’ The single is a roaring and relentless blend of punk and noise pop that oozes with power and inspires listeners to get in touch with their inner fury. The single is a banger through and through, opening with hooky guitar riffs leading the charge into a world full of thrumming bass lines and crashing percussion. Eastwood taps into a merry bitterness with her addictive vocals, declaring, “I’m into hating / Not hesitating / I’m gonna tell you everything / That I think of you.” In the climactic chorus, she challenges her peers to a fight, exclaiming that she always gets what she wants. She later cements herself as an indomitable force to be reckoned with as she chants atop a hypnotic melody, “I am untouchable / Yeah I’m a dangerous girl / I’m gonna hate shit / You should embrace it / You’ll learn to like it.” “‘All I Wanna Do Is Hate’ is about acting out against people who are trying to help, but you’re not ready for that and choose to do the opposite of the advice you’re given,” said vocalist and bassist Jess Eastwood, about the single in a statement. “This song is just about being incredibly angry, for what is up to whoever is listening, but sometimes you need to go against everyone to learn a valuable lesson. Maybe you’ll write a cool angry song about it.” The accompanying music video is a raging visual that opens with scenes of Eastwood in an abandoned warehouse. She’s soon chased by a group of cheerleaders, and scenes of the band smashing and shredding their way through the track further lure the viewer in. London multi-hyphenate Lava La Rue has shared her new single ‘Renegade’. A trailblazing talent, Lava is part of the NiNE8 Collective, working alongside close friends such as breakouts Biig Piig and Mac Wetha. Alongside this, Lava’s solo outings are increasingly formidable, building to 2022’s excellent Hi-Fidelity EP. Freshly signed to Dirty Hit, Lava La Rue now sits on a roster which also includes the likes of Rina Sawayama, beabadoobee, and little known indie types The 1975. There’s a lot more incoming, with Lava opening a fresh chapter on their latest single. A signal of psychedelic intent, ‘Renegade’ has an otherworldly appeal, its lawless aspects intermingling with Lava La Rue’s voice. Born to communicate, they utilise some bold lyricism, continually evading expectations. [via Clash]

London-based purveyor of alt-pop Fran Lobo has announced that her debut album Burning It Feels Like will arrive on August 18 through Heavenly Recordings. Previous single ‘All I Want’ features on the record, as does today’s new single ‘Tricks’, which will be the closer. Lobo says: “‘Tricks’ is inspired by a 1970s kind of songwriting sensibility. It’s classic in its structure but with weird production and sound design. It’s direct and vulnerable and it explores those ‘tricks’ where you’re playing mind games with yourself, world-building in your head. It’s theatrical and dark, it’s me taking the piss out of myself whilst playing on fairy tales, the idea of the ‘crazed woman’ and unrequited love/ love addiction.” At a remove from the work, Lobo can say that she’s taking the piss out of herself, but in the midst of ‘Tricks’ she is deadly serious about her emotions. Supported by atmospheric piano chords and tense electronics, Lobo sounds like a woman on the verge of a breakdown. It’s beautiful while being slightly unsettling, but Lobo’s voice ensures that the human element remains the beating heart of the undulating confession. She’s simultaneously trapped by and attracted to her tormentor – namely her mind – and this push and pull is the lifeblood of ‘Tricks’, Lobo repeating “keep playing these tricks on me” as both a request and complaint. While Lobo in the song is uncertain of herself, the Lobo who created the song is in full control, wringing a range of emotion out of the direct but dynamic way she presents her struggle. Pussy Riot, Boys Noize, and Alice Glass have come together for the new song ‘Chastity.’ It comes with a music video conceptualized by Lil Internet. In a press statement about the single, Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova said, “This song will put the patriarchy in a tiny cage and throw the key out.” [via Pitchfork]
