A scrappy guitar riff and choppy instrumentation give ‘Robot’ plenty of garage-rock bite, while tinny, robotic vocal effects introduce a strange futuristic quality beneath the fuzz. The result is a wonderfully wonky collision of fuzzy guitars and retro-futuristic electronics, with a slight Yeah Yeah Yeahs-esque edge. The humour comes through just as strongly as the distortion, particularly in the wonderfully ridiculous declarations of falling for something artificial. Accompanied by a brilliantly fitting stop-motion animation, ‘Robot’ feels like it has wandered in from some strange analogue future where falling in love with a machine is perfectly normal.

Clutter describe ‘Robot’ as “a playful take on the rise of technology” that is both a criticism and a joke, with the distorted and choppy instrumentation deliberately blurring the line between guitars and electronics. It is that sense of not taking itself too seriously that makes the track so much fun; underneath all the fuzz and robotic interference is a genuinely infectious little love song for the digital age.

Influenced by generations of DIY outsiders including Bikini Kill, Pavement, Sonic Youth and even the fictional chaos of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Clutter have quickly become known for balancing punk immediacy with emotional vulnerability.

That balance sits at the heart of ‘Grease Baby’, a warm yet emotionally conflicted summer anthem that captures the dizzy contradictions of youth, desire and self-comparison. Written by Emma French after a summer trip to Greece, the track explores the strange emotional duality of idolising someone while quietly measuring yourself against them.

Speaking on the new single, Clutter say: “’Grease Baby’ paints a picture of a vacation. Of a never-ending summer and longing for something more, not quite knowing what. It’s a warm and kraut like rock song with elements of pop. It’s a happy sad song about yearning with a beautiful summer as a back-drop. Grease meets the sea.”

Their first new release since the success of their first EP, Loves You, released last Spring, ‘Superstar’ is an ode to the fuzzy grunge sound of Clutter’s debut, taken to the next level. Hilda Ander and Emma French’s vocals build a palpable tension verse to verse, before breaking down into addictive guitar slides with a veritable wall of distortion behind them.

Singing from the perspective of the characters in Brideshead Revisited, a shared favourite book of co-vocalists Hilda Ander and Emma French, ‘Brideshead’ sees the pair come together on blurry alt-rock verses and a droning, addictive chorus.

Speaking of the new track, Clutter said: “In ‘Brideshead’, the two vocalists sing back and forth to each other, striving to become one, surrounded by chaotic guitars and playful drums. It’s a dramatic and mellow song, based on the book by Evelyn Waugh. When we wrote Brideshead, the music came first. We made two quite distinct parts, one slower and one more fast paced verse.

“We’ve always wanted to write a duet, or a sort of call and response song, so with Brideshead Hilda and Emma wrote lyrics from the two main characters’ point of view. When we compared the lyrics, they matched very well and seemed like a conversation, ending in a melodramatic hazy blur accompanied by Ville’s galloping drums and a rattling guitar melody by Ove.

“It’s a very fun song to play live and we really wanted to capture the overwhelming sound and feeling that we get on stage when we recorded the song. I think we did!”

The EP’s closing track and the first song they ever recorded, ‘Kraut’ features grungy lyrics filled with restless malaise, paired atop melodic indie hooks and a droning fuzzy bassline. The band said, “At our first gig we only played two songs and that was one of them, so it’s quite sentimental. Playing stuff live becomes the benchmark of what we feel about a song and how a crowd reacts, and that was one of the first songs where it all felt right.”

Fleshing out the quartet’s sonic world, the six track debut EP, Clutter Loves You, fuses existential lyrical ideas, post-hardcore guitars, and feisty, punk-spirited calls to arms.

Speaking of the new track, Clutter said: “’Kraut’ is a straightforward, endless cycle of static guitars. The simple build is accompanied by emotion filled vocals and a melancholic synthesizer. It’s a dreamlike krauty death dance and it’s one of the first songs we ever wrote together. Hilda wrote the lyrics on her endless way home from one of the first real parties she ever attended and we wrote the music together in our old school. Recorded in Oves tiny childhood bedroom, we were all hovered over a little synthesizer and improvised the noises at the end. It’s nostalgic and captures a feeling of adolescence we all will undoubtedly lose.”

Showcasing the unrelenting, cacophonous sound that echoes the band’s own name, ‘Jesus’ finds singer and guitarist Emma French taking lead vocals, fusing existential lyrical ideas with grungy, post hardcore-nodding guitars.

Speaking of the new single, Clutter said: “‘Jesus’ is an indie rock song about everything and nothing and the things in between.

“The ‘Jesus’ music video has a classic setup, a band in a white studio, and since it’s our first video we thought that formula would work well as an introduction to the band. Because of our limited budget and low quality camera, we wanted to lean into the sleazy, early 2000s feeling. Majken Bergman shot the entire thing in a day, following our idea, then edited the footage and sent it to Henry Ander. Henry added the final touches, the animations, which we wanted a sort of comic book feel to. It’s a fun video and we all had fun working on it, hopefully that’s obvious when you’re watching it.”
