Coming in hot with their third single for 2024, 51st Avenue continue down a heavier path with their pulsating new track ‘The Dark’. As we saw on the bands previous single ‘Moments’; ‘The Dark’ is full to the brim with riffs, dynamic vocal passages and a brilliant use of atmosphere. With a future-forward approach sonically, the band blend elements of electronic music, pop-punk and metalcore with ease – weaving in and out of melodic, scene-setting verses and fully-fledged breakdowns effortlessly. Thematically the track lives up to its title – describing a scenario where a path without adversity is hard to find. “Guess who’s back? 51st emo’s back again! Sometimes the dark just calls – see what I did there? I think I felt a bit lyrically messy with this one, really in my head. We just get into situations where our backs are against the wall and there’s very little choice on our part but the choice made will still have a huge effect. Like you’re stuck in the middle and it’s too hard to make the right decision because that will still have collateral damage. Essentially, all roads lead to ‘The Dark’. I wanted to show that one sided dialogue of justifying and pleading all in one. I think we’ve all been there and I think we forget that as much as people are out there judging those choices, there are those who’d understand if they knew what was up.” ‘The Dark’ marks the second collaboration with the band’s new bassist, Anthony Carollo, and was recorded and mixed once again at Keywork Audio by Mark Williamson (A Swift Farewell, Alienist, Keepsake). While staying true to the classic 51st Avenue formula, the band have continued to evolve in both the songwriting and production process, elevating their sound to a new level on each release., “The last few songs we have pushed ourselves into a different direction. The song ‘The Dark’ revisits our usual 51st Avenue formula. Heavy riffs, electronic verses, driving drum beats and catchy melodies. While using the 51st Avenue formula we still incorporated new elements. This song like MOMENTS features a breakdown and is still slightly heavier than our other material.”

Building on the wave of momentum from the September release of her highly anticipated debut album, This Is Doom Trap, Mimi Barks continues to challenge the conventions of heavy music. Expanding on the visual narrative of her debut album, Mimi Barks has dropped an explosive new music video for her collaboration with Raven Grey. Speaking on the track Grey shares: “While you were waiting outside the burrows of her soil, she laid dormant underneath…fragile and incomplete. From the gallows she has risen. It’s time you finally meet – wormgirl.“ [via Amped]

Symphonic metal storytellers, Delain, have released their new EP, Dance With The Devil, this via Napalm Records and are all fired up kick off their UK tour in Glasgow on November 15. Ahead of the release, the band dropped a new single ‘The Reaping’, cut from their latest offering. The gripping track offers a whirlwind of emotions; articulating foreboding and sorrow through hooky electronic melodies and modern heaviness. Its collective themes express disillusionment with society’s current path toward imminent and inescapable consequences. Keyboardist, founder, and main songwriter Martijn Westerholt says, “’The Reaping’ is a very expressive song with a serious subject – where the world/society is heading and metaphorical storms on the horizon. Musically the song can be recognized as a typical Delain song filled with heavy guitars, but also with the very recognizable 80’s synth elements Delain is known for.“ [via Amped]

BURNING WITCHES bring back the vibe of ’80s heavy metal and update their powerful force with renewed sonic clarity on their new maxi-single, The Spell Of The Skull, set for release via Napalm Records on December 10. With screaming guitars, the Swiss/Dutch/American band is back for a heavy metal blast session in the snow. This time, they curse their audience with two new songs from their latest conjuring of witchcraft. Witchqueen Romana Kalkuhl hypnotizes your mind with her melodic riffs, while diabolic priestess Laura Guldemond conquers your soul with crowd-pleasing shouts. Title track ‘The Spell Of The Skull’ starts off with a short but mighty heavy guitar intro that perfectly sets up Laura’s powerful vocals, which especially shine in the chorus of the song, making it a true sing-along experience and creating an epic atmosphere pleasing every fan of heavy metal. After five attention-grabbing albums, BURNING WITCHES prepares for another attack in 2025. Kalkuhl on ‘The Spell Of The Skull’: “We are busy bees and in between all the shows we managed to write the first new songs with Courtney on guitar. We are so excited to present you some fresh music and this keeps us all entertained till the next album. Working on this was such a blast, ‘The Spell Of The Skull’ could be a new WITCHES anthem, what do you think? Lean back and enjoy and get enchanted by your favorite WITCHES!” [via Blabbermouth]

Finnish progressive metal band Rioghan is set to release the second studio album Kept on February 14 via Inverse Records. The second single ‘Hands’ is out now. Rioghan comments: ”‘Hands’ hits with raw agony from the get go, compiling complicated emotions arising from a place of abuse and unsafety, threading back and forth on the line of apathy and fight or flight-response. Musically the song gives you a false feeling of safety at first, until it sheds its’ skin halfway through, evolving to a new version of itself.” [via Metalheads Forever]

Bristol-based heavy-pop quartet Bitter Kisses have released their new single, ‘Social Demons’. ‘Social Demons,’ the band’s eighth single, is characterized as an angst-fueled torrent of thought and rhythm. The track was produced by Alex Copp, known for his work with As December Falls and Led By Lanterns, and mastered by Grant Berry. Recording took place at Steel City Studios, ensuring a polished and powerful sound that aligns with Bitter Kisses’ signature heavy-pop style. Reflecting on the inspiration behind the single, the band stated, “’Social Demons’ puts words to the struggles of coping with our own hyperactive and often unfair inner monologues (inner demons). The ambition of the track was to expose the conversation between ourselves and our not-so-selves.” [via Click Roll Boom]

Butcher Babies have been reborn. A few months out from the departure of co-founding vocalist Carla Harvey, the L.A.-based metalcore outfit have returned with a single called ‘Sincerity,’ which also marks their first piece of music through new label home Judge & Jury Records. ‘Sincerity’ follows the band’s 2023 full-length, Eye for an Eye… /… ‘Til the World’s Blind, and it’s their first release since Harvey’s exit. With the band now reconfigured as a one-vocalist enterprise, Heidi Shepherd’s singing is fully front and center on the modern metal track, and reliably powerful. A press release explains that the song is “rooted in wishful thinking,” but is likewise about being put into a situation where someone manipulates your emotions “to feed their own ego and benefit.” “Over the last decade and a half, Butcher Babies has become known for our aggression and soaring melodies. This new release is no different,” Shepherd said of ‘Sincerity.’ “Diving into real-life experiences and expectations while exposing the rawest part of our souls, this single is bound to invoke an emotional rollercoaster between looking toward the future with hope while reminiscing of past losses.” [via Revolver]

Rockshots Records and Lay Of The Autumn are excited to announce the release of their second single, ‘Flowing Tears’ from their highly anticipated album Of Love And Sorrow due out on October 25. Lay Of The Autumn is a new Symphonic Power Metal band led by Davide Scuteri (Ravenword, Choirs Of Veritas) featuring Iryna Boyarkina (ERIA, Mysterya), Michele Olmi (Chronosfear, Embrace Of Souls), Cesare Ferrari and Davide Lovecchio. Their debut album, featuring 10 emotionally charged tracks, merges the intensity of Power Metal with the grandeur of Symphonic Metal creating a deeply evocative listening experience. ‘Flowing Tears’ is a standout piece that encapsulates the full spectrum of the band’s sound, blending sorrow with beauty in a way that is uniquely Lay Of The Autumn.

Two years since the release of their last studio album Black & Gold, the Swedish quartet Thundermother reveal the first details surrounding their upcoming new studio album titled, Dirty & Divine. It is slated for release on February 7, 2025 via AFM Records. A blistering onslaught of loud, proud and gritty hard rock, Dirty & Divine marks the start of a new era for Thundermother. This album showcases the Thundermother recording debut for both frontwoman Linnea Vikström Egg and for drummer Joan Massing. Dirty & Divine also welcomes bassist Majsan Lindberg back into the fold. Bigger, bolder and more dynamic than ever before, the Swedes return as an upgraded and remotivated force! Now the rock goddesses unleash a new music video for their latest single, the anthemic album opener: ‘So Close.’ Guitarist and founding member Filippa Nässil reveals: “‘So Close’ was so close to not being included on the album. But when we recorded it live in the studio after all the other songs were done, it turned out so well that it made it across the finish line. It seems we might have stumbled upon a hit.”

Delain have just released a new single and video, ‘Dance With The Devil,’ following last year’s Dark Waters album. The song is the title-track from an upcoming EP – due out on November 8 via Napalm – which also includes two more new songs, two ‘newly-presented favourites’ with their latest band line-up, nine live tracks and two instrumentals. “We’re thrilled to have brand new material ready to be released!” enthuses Martijn Westerholt. “In addition to the new songs, it was fantastic to have captured some magical live moments of our European tour earlier this year as live tracks for the EP. We’re definitely very excited for this release and are really looking forward to bringing the new music to the stage!” Martijn also shares of their newest single: “We’re really excited and eager to share this new Delain song with the world. It captures the recognisable and signature sound of Delain but with a fresh and modern touch.” [via Kerrang!]

ENTHEOS have released a new music video. The new music video, for the track ‘A Thousand Days,’ is taken from the American progressive death metal band’s upcoming new EP, An End To Everything, which is scheduled to be released in October this year, via Metal Blade Records. Speaking about the new single, vocalist Chaney Crabb says, “lyrically, ‘A Thousand Days’ is a song about feeling as if you‘re on the edge of life and death. In writing ‘A Thousand Days’, we wanted to focus on a more ‘mellow’ death metal vibe and simultaneously incorporate some elements of grunge and pitched screaming in the chorus.” [via Distorted Sound]

Beyond the Pale, the death/thrash metal outfit from the Netherlands with a pinch of black, and brimmed with soul-purging riffs, is unstoppable. The band just dropped a new music video, this time filled with feisty pirates for the track ‘Walk the Plank’. Following ‘The Age of the Pariah,’ ‘Storm en Drift’ and the remix for ‘Facts and Figures’ by acclaimed Japanese musician Frost (Gods of Decay; Godfrost), ‘Walk the Plank’ is the fourth single released by Beyond The Pale from their debut EP Monument in Time. ‘Walk the Plank’ depicts a narrative of rebellion and resistance against a corrupt and oppressive authority, particularly targeting women. The lyrics describe the struggles of those trapped in a system dominated by unfair and unjust individuals. ‘Walk the Plank’ is a powerful call for resistance and (female) empowerment, with individuals standing up to their oppressors. The pirates symbolize their fighting spirit and determination to reclaim control of their own destiny. [via Click Roll Boom]

After teasing the single for a little while now, Hot Milk have just shared their vulnerable, standalone new song and video, ‘Where Does The Light Get In?’. The track is the band’s first new music since last year’s A CALL TO THE VOID, with Han Mee describing it as “its own beast that came from a place of great torment and suffering. Matters of the heart are rarely touched by our band but after the last year put me into a place I never wish to return I couldn’t not write this song. It was a necessity.” “Sadness doesn’t last forever, but when it consumes you it feels like it’s there for eternity,” adds Jim Shaw. “Essentially this song is a cry out for a change in circumstances. It’s hard seeing someone close to you in pain and feeling powerless to change it. I wanted to exacerbate the vulnerability of this song so I began as stripped back as I could, me and a piano, and played what you can hear as soon as the song starts. We wanted the lyrics to come across almost like a prayer so we brought in the girls in Espera to record a choir and act as the response in the chorus.” [via Kerrang!]

Following some online teasing, Spiritbox have just shared their first new music of 2024 Entitled ‘Soft Spine,’ this genuinely crushing new track from the Canadian metalcore crew follows last year’s The Fear Of Fear EP – and is potentially a very exciting hint at their long-awaited second album… Who knows?
Memoremains releases new music. In the spring, the single ‘Toxic Girl’ opened a new era for Memoremains which continues now with a new release, the tight pop metal song ‘Stuck’. “The song, as its name suggests, is about being stuck. Society offers us a lot of expectations about how and in what order things should be done in life, but they don’t always feel like our own or essential. While others are moving forward in their lives, it may sometimes feel like they themselves are stuck. I hope the song provides peer support for those who are frustrated by the expectations of others and to act as an encouragement to make their own choices,” says Johanna Ahonen.

March 17 will see ELYSION release Bring Out Your Dead through Massacre Records. The album title is a metaphor, suggesting that extreme times are requiring extreme measures to get rid of everything rotten inside us and let the healing begin. Now, the band has shared a video for first single ‘Crossing Over’, as the band reveals: “There was no doubt we’d choose this song to be ELYSION’s very first official video clip ever, as the song represents our distinctive musical identity 100%. ‘Crossing Over’ is a sound statement for our band, one that anyone who has been following us through the years will probably relate to. This song is quite personal too, as it praises the crossover one has to make in order to break away from your personal demons, to prevail over your self-destructive alter ego, and to find hope in life.“ [via Metal Shock Finland]

On the eve of their highly anticipated new album Dark Waters, metal maestros DELAIN gifted fans one more advance single, unveiling new track ‘Queen Of Shadow‘, together with a hauntingly beautiful official music video. The track merges the orchestral and synth-focused soundscapes DELAIN is known for. It weaves melodic heavy guitars that intertwine with orchestral lines and vocal melodies, marking another powerful example of the fresh new sound that presents the crystal clear voice of frontwoman Diana Leah – shining bright like the early morning sun of a yet untouched day. Supported by Paolo Ribaldini and instrumental expertise, the song displays all aspects and colours of their multifaceted spectrum – ranging from pop, to film score-inspired, to blistering, room shaking metal. Keyboardist, founder, and main songwriter Martijn Westerholt comments, “’Queen of Shadow’ is a classic example of pure DELAIN-style. Musically it has some really awesome things going on such as harmonic guitars and catchy melodies which are complemented by both the alluring and powerhouse vocals of Diana and our guest singer Paolo.” [via Metal Planet Music]

After releasing their latest record, Deceivers, last year to critical acclaim, extreme metal masters Arch Enemy have returned with a new video for the track ‘Poisoned Arrow’. The clip, which was produced by Mirko Witzki of Witzki Visions, can be seen below. Arch Enemy guitarist Michael Amott comments: “I almost can’t believe we’re releasing a seventh (!) video off our recent Deceivers album. Yet here it is, ‘Poisoned Arrow’, a mid-tempo track drenched in melodic guitar work and a somewhat different vibe overall compared to the other singles we’ve had out. The video was shot in Berlin, Germany during a hectic whirlwind schedule with director Mirko Witzki and his talented crew — they even made it snow in the middle of the sweltering German summer heat!” [via Blabbermouth]

Melbourne Crustmetal/Deathpunk band Küntsquäd are excited to announce they have inked a record deal with European label Wormholedeath for their upcoming debut album release. The self-titled album will be released worldwide on February 24. With the announcement comes the release of the first single ‘Gods Of War’.

Visions Of Atlantis returned strongly with their studio release, Pirates, in 2022, followed by extensive touring through Europe and the US. There’s no time to rest for the Pirates, so they start 2023 with the release of a brand new high-quality official music video. Capturing their dedicated fans in the video, the rousing single ‘Clocks’ will make every symphonic metal enthusiast’s heart pound faster. Fixing itself in the minds of the crowd forever, catchy harmonies are underlined by bouncy metal beats. The single comes just in time for the band’s announcement of their Pirates Over Europe tour, featuring support from Autumn Bride, and kicking off in Germany on April 4. The tour will follow their Pirates Over North America tour, featuring support from The Spider Accomplice and beginning on February 7 in Los Angeles, CA. Clémentine Delauney: ”We are so excited to be able to release a video for ‘Clocks’ as we love this song and we noticed that it quickly became one of our fans’ favorites as well! We could tell from the crowd’s response every time we started to play this song live last year! So here is a fun portrait of what enjoying life as a pirate can be about, remembering the clock is ticking… Let’s all make a golden play out of 2023!” [via Brave Words]

In 2022, Delain strode boldly forwards, announcing a revitalized lineup and plans for a new studio album, entitled Dark Waters, to be released February 10 via Napalm Records. The album is a sonic rollercoaster ride of catchy tunes with explosive elements, ranging from pop to film score-inspired to blistering, room-shakin’ metal, and even includes a special guest or two. Unveiled this week, the new, emotionally-driven single ‘Moth To A Flame” also showcases Delain’s versatility, offering up a pop-induced hymn, and proving that the globally respected band are at the top of their game. The official video for ‘Moth To A Flame’ draws listeners even deeper into the Delain universe. [via Brave Words]

Waving the flag of a new generation of metal, alternative and punk, The Hellfreaks are thrilled to announce the upcoming release of their fierce new album, Pitch Black Sunset, set for release April 14 via Napalm Records. The curtain has finally fallen again as the budding band unveils their addictive first heavy rock-infused single, ‘Hit Me Where It Hurts’. Jumping right into the pit, the quartet blends metallic punches with a sound echoing the likes of genre visionaries Muse, accented by electrified guitar leads and raspy punk vocal attacks by singer Shakey Sue. Representing the relentless atmosphere of the song, the Hungarian musicians strap on their boots to celebrate a never-ending night in their official music video. The Hellfreaks state on ‘Hit Me Where It Hurts’: “’Hit Me Where It Hurts’ is about hope and despair. Hope is able to move mountains. But what if the desired dream stays a dream? Then hope turns to prison. Intoxicated by a desire that never comes true, we reach the dead end, where the brain clearly sees the way out, but our heart won’t let us make the necessary steps. All that’s left is suffering. This song is an invocation for the metaphorical punch to eliminate the last piece of false hope, the real culprit in such a situation.” [via Brave Words]

Symphonic metal band, Beyond The Black, have released their fifth studio album, which is self-titled, via Nuclear Blast Records. The band also deliver a music video for the track, ‘Free Me’. Jennifer Haben comments: “This album is the epitome of Beyond The Black and it’s arrived finally where it belongs: with our fans! We couldn’t be happier, and today we’re celebrating this release with the powerful, reassuring message of our new single, ‘Free Me’: Never think you need to go out alone and solemnly carry the weight of the world. We’re in this together and we are many!“ [via Brave Words]

It’s gonna be really tough for any metal song this year to be more exhilarating than ‘Pardon Me, I Have to Go Now.’ Hanabie‘s latest stunner is a distinctly modern update on the garishly fun electronic-core that took off in the late 2000s; neon party synths, breakdowns with the jingly catchiness of a radio hip-hop beat, and wheel-screeching turns between throat-searing screams and buttery cleans. Hanbie add flecks of traditional Japanese instrumentation and notes of hyperpop onto that pile, and the result is a blindingly fun anti-work anthem that’ll make you want to slam your computer shut and gleefully stomp it to pieces. [via Revolver]

Jennifer Haben comments: “‘Dancing In The Dark’ is about taking the choice to not give in when it‘s getting tough, and to fight for yourself!
Setting off into a new era, metal greats Delain recently returned with a new lineup, impressively proving that they are stronger than any machine with their standalone single ‘The Quest and The Curse’. Fuelled by massive support and enthusiasm all around the globe, the multi-million streaming leading outfit now finally sets the stage for their eagerly awaited next studio album, entitled Dark Waters, out February 10 via Napalm Records. The tracklist merges perfectly with the fantastic voice of new vocalist Diana Leah, showcasing her incredible talent and musical sophistication, which the brand new single ‘Beneath’ manifests. The vocal department holds new adventures with guest singer Paolo Ribaldini, who also highlights the track as the ultimate hymn. Along with a stunning music video, ‘Beneath’ takes the listener into a sinister underworld of the deep. Modern, synth melodies mix with catchy classical passages and ominous riffs throughout the song. Martijn Westerholt on ‘Beneath’: “’Beneath’ is a perfect ambassador of the album and Delain as a whole because it encapsulates almost all of the recognizable DELAIN elements you will find on the album.” [via Brave Words]

The experimental progressive death metal act Entheos have released a brand new single called ‘In Purgatory’ and a killer new video to go along with it. Entheos — which is currently vocalist Chaney Crabb and multi-instrumentalist Navene Koperweis — have always pushed boundaries with their music, taking inspiration from death metal, groove, grunge, jazz, and prog, just to list a few. They stripped down to a two-piece in 2020, allowing Koperweis and Crabb to explore whatever avenues they wish, and the proof lies in ‘In Purgatory.’ “‘In Purgatory’ is a direct extension of our last single ‘Absolute Zero,” says Koperweis. “Musically, the lead guitar and melodies that appear on the outro of ‘Absolute Zero’ became the seeds for ‘In Purgatory,’ and from there, the song wrote itself.” Crabb continued, saying that “Lyrically, it represents introspection and coming to terms with the person that you are at your very core. The video was shot and edited by the incredible David Brodsky and Allison Woest and their team at My Good Eye: Music Visuals.” [via Metal Injection]

L.A.’s Next Door To Heaven is a potent metalcore combo that brings vulnerability, strength, and focuses to another level of melodic and heavy music. To date, they have released two full-length albums and an EP and their latest offering is a music video for the new song ‘Disguise’. According to vocalist Daria Mazunova, this track has more extreme vocals compared to their previous material, and she kept that in mind when writing the lyrics. Very honest and straightforward, Mazunova jokes that it’s a bit simpler than their regular stuff, but not for drummers, she continues to explain the track: “Our new track ‘Disguise’, yet unreleased, inspired us to make a music video for it. It’s rare when all your thoughts at the moment can be put together into music and lyrics this well. It is about the process of finding out who’s a friend, and who’s a foe. It’s a way to look at the people you thought you knew and understand what has changed. For sure, this song and video are going to be released in due time therefore should be well received by fans.”

US rock giants Icon For Hire share more new music with single ‘Shadow’, taken from their upcoming album The Reckoning due for release on September 30 via Kartel Music Group. ‘Shadow’ follows the release of heavy cut ‘Breakdown’ and continues to build on the momentum gained by a string of singles and video releases ahead of their forthcoming new album The Reckoning. The soaring new single deals with “the ugly part of ourselves we try to suppress and hide, but what if we embraced them?”, says lead singer and songwriter Ariel Bloomer. Digging deeper into the creative process of songwriting for the track, Ariel adds; “I’m in this space right now where I’m learning not to be ashamed, apologetic or resistant. To accept those dark parts of myself as me”. Co-written with Breaking Benjamin’s Keith Wallen and mixed by Joe Rickard of In Flames and Red, ‘Shadow’ is the first track Icon For Hire felt would benefit from the help of an outsider. “We had the chorus and most of the vocals written, we got together with Keith to finish it out. He was able to help move some of the pieces around, and helped us demo out the structure. It was our first time working with him and it went really well”.

Aversed is back with their second single of 2022 and, much like the first one, it’s an incredible progressive death metal ass-kicker. The song covers a ton of heavy ground before returning to a super catchy chorus sung by new vocalist Sarah Hartman. “Humans have a universal language: violence. It’s the only solution we consistently turn to in order to solve even our most basic problems,” said drummer Jeff Saltzman. “‘Death Lullaby’ serves as an ode to this natural state of affairs. On the contrary, while all of us aspire to it, universal peace is a concept that is hard to comprehend. We need violence to comfort us and lull us to sleep each night because that is what we know. The beauty of being a metal musician and a fan is that we have an outlet to release this explosion of violent feelings within each of us.” [via Metal Injection]

Marlene Mendoza is here to throw down big time with her new single ‘Insanity.’ If you’re looking for mosh riffs, breakdowns, and a massive chorus that’s sure to incite tons of fists in the air, then you’re going to love this. “I am excited to release my first EP that showcases my artistic expression and authentic self thus far,” said Mendoza. “And also to show that women can be awesomely insane too.” [via Metal Injection]

Forever May Fall are a band from Charlotte, North Carolina, who’ve been around since 2017, but have used 2022 as an opportunity to reintroduce themselves to the world with a fresh sound and a re-energized approach. After dropping two singles throughout the first half of the year, ‘Aftermath’ and ‘You,’ the group led by frontwoman Jillyan Brennan are back with another new banger called ‘Undertow.’ Bands like Evanescence, Halestorm and Linkin Park definitely come to mind as similar reference points, but Forever May Fall are definitely putting their own spin on that type of heavy, anthemic rock with a song like ‘Undertow.’ [via Revolver]
