‘Knock The Wind’ is one of the new album’s softer moments, with singer Katie Munshaw’s tender vocals and reflective lyrics taking centre stage over sparse acoustic guitar. “A few months ago I had my heart set on moving from Ontario to somewhere out east in Canada,” Katie says. “I’ve always been really drawn to the sea, and whales in particular. My childhood bedroom was covered in ocean wallpaper, my bed sheets patterned to look like water. ‘Knock The Wind’ is a rumination on how you can live somewhere your whole life and never really feel at home. It was the first song we recorded with our producer, David, and it set the tone for the rest of our time together.”

Dizzy’s new album candidly explores the anxieties of being an artist in 2023, but ‘Close’ takes a moment to reflect on the comradery of being in a tight-knit band and the respite of friendship. The mid-tempo track channels the calm at the end of a chaotic day, with singer Katie Munshaw’s softly affecting vocals shining over simple, emotive chords, conveying Dizzy’s trademark warmth.

Speaking about the track, Katie says: “Back in 2019 we were on tour in Eau Claire, Wisconsin when the wheel bearing on our van went kaputz on American thanksgiving. It was a hard day but the only thing I can really remember about it is laughing in the mechanic’s waiting room and then finding our way back to a hotel with a bottle of green room whiskey. We’ve been through a lot as a band but we always manage to reconnect on itchy hotel beds between episodes of Family Guy. ‘Close’ is about a lot of things but mainly it’s about the comfort Mack, Charlie and Alex bring me.”

Of the video, Katie says: “The video is a meditation on the saying ‘get back on the horse’ and shows me and an older version of myself repeating the same pattern over and over again, expecting a different result.”

‘Open Up Wide’ is Dizzy’s most unabashedly pop-leaning release to date. Its perfectly cyclical, almost trance-indebted hook tips the waters of the band’s trademark indie-pop into something that sounds bigger and more brazen, setting the tone for the hard-hitting sounds of the new album. Lyrically, the track is “a tongue-in-cheek ode to a music industry we’ve never understood all that well,” explains singer Katie Munshaw. It explores the superficial, often strenuous nature of working in the music industry, with sardonic lyrics that question the state of the machine.

Speaking about ‘Open Up Wide’, Katie says: “When we started recording the album, our producer David [Pramik] was super conscious of cutting the fat from each song. One afternoon he encouraged us to write our parts in a simpler, more ‘spoonfed’ fashion for easy listening, when Mack piped up cheekily ‘Open up wide! Here comes the airplane!’ The next morning we were all feeling a bit resentful of that mindset and ‘Open Up Wide’ came to be while we were having our morning coffees.”

Dizzy’s lead singer, Katie Munshaw, has been thinking a lot about the way things look and the way you can find comfort in disappearing into it all. She describes the new album, a bold indie-pop beast continuing the legacy built from two previous shimmering records, as a “patchwork quilt” with each song a square, or a sliver, of her life. “None of them have all that much to do with each other and yet they wouldn’t exist without one another,” she says.

It makes for a colourful record that’s intrinsically Dizzy – one that swerves comparison, instead reflecting the shapeshifting and imperfect nature of its musicians. Avoiding the spotlight yet more confidently themselves than ever.

There’s a charm and a magic to Dizzy’s shimmering indie pop that feels as though it’s designed to soundtrack life’s formative moments, and this has never been clearer than on ‘Birthmark’. The track channels the feeling of a first love lost, countering heartsick lyrics with a soaring, uplifting melody and the band’s trademark warmth to temper a melancholy memory.

Speaking about the track, singer Katie Munshaw says: “The song is from the point of view of someone I love who went through their first heartbreak last year. I remember we were laying in bed one night and they said they didn’t feel so bad until it was time to go to sleep. I thought that was so sad.”

‘Barking Dog’ showcases a heavier, more intense side of Dizzy’s bold indie-pop. Sonically, the track occupies a space not dissimilar to The Japanese House, Alvvays or Samia, with raw, searing lyrics which tread a darker ground than the band has dared to tread before: “You can’t stop the tears from coming / Baby, you were always meant to drain / And no amount of loving can stop the dog from barking when she’s in pain.”

Singer Katie Munshaw leads Dizzy into its next chapter donning a striking, sinister mask, worn as a middle finger to an industry which places so much undue importance on appearance. “I’m a very anxious and sensitive person. Thinking about taking a bunch of photos and videos of myself, especially after two years in isolation, felt a bit shocking and scary, and like something I didn’t really want to do,” she explains.

“I find it strange how musicians are often introverted people, yet one of the largest parts of our job is visually selling ourselves to an audience. It feels unnatural to pine for strangers’ attention to afford rent or whatever, and as someone who’s particularly sensitive, it isn’t sustainable. To me, the mask not only represents a calloused version of myself but it lends itself to an anonymity that I love. A Jane Doe of sorts. I like the idea of a female artist making the conscious decision to take her appearance out of the question for the audience.”
