Speaking on the story behind her new single, Eden Rain shares that; “I wrote ‘Great Nothing’, about the rise and fall of a frienduationship – which is a word I’ve (maybe?) made up to describe the experience of a friend confess feelings for you and everything gets all weird and messy and tangly. I feel like when Conway and I wrote this song it was like putting all my frustrations of every friendship that went off-piste or person I had liked that hadn’t liked me back, or had but at the wrong time, into a meat grinder and … out came Great Nothing. It’s like the opposite of a great love, it’s the mourning of the potential of a relationship and the confusion and the angst to put everything back where it was.. and all the sinking feelings that come with it.”

Speaking on the sentiment behind ‘Closer’, Eden shares; “It’s definitely been my most cathartic song to write- I wrote this song about my experience of loving someone who is going through grief. It’s about the feeling of someone being so close to you but unreachable at the same time, the pain of not knowing how to be around them or knowing that you’re powerless in helping them. I wrote it one afternoon with Conway (halfrhymes) and then I cried all the way home on the tube listening to the demo.”

Alongside the single’s release, Rain has shared an official music video which in true Eden Rain fashion was a DIY project, brought to life with the help of her imaginative, creative mind. Bringing light to the darkness, the visualiser acts as a gorgeous accompaniment to the song, and can be watched below.

Eden shares what the song means to her: “This is one of my most special songs. I wrote it following a dramatic winter in the covid era which was jam packed full of life drama. It was like a bad and traumatic episode of ‘Girls’… if all of them were in a mass pandemic. Everything was imploding and I was going THROUGH it on an almost comical level. The thing I tried to remind myself the whole time was that all things change and all things pass and nothing stays the same forever. It was literally a mantra for me. I was also falling in love for the first time so while I wanted everything else to move on, all I really wanted was to be frozen in time with that person. I revisited this song a few months ago and realized how everything I’d written in the second verse that I was struggling with and thought would never change- had actually changed and moved on, so I rewrote the lyrics to the ones that they are today.”

Speaking on the release, Eden states: “This song was written based partially on mine and partially on my friends dating stories. Its about losing your brain, your identity, yourself, to fit into someone elses view of you. Really important and angry song for me to write because in the past I, and other friends I know, really struggled to feel like we had a voice in relationships / situationships and would just sort of place our brains and comfort out of the picture and do and be whatever for someone who wanted us. It took me a long time of thinking badly about myself that I wasn’t right or enough for someone before I even clocked to wonder if they were right for me.”
