With production duties supplied by the unwavering ‘king of electro’ Endoflevelbaddie, ‘I See Only Red’ tells a haunting tale of waking up to a lifeless body, unable to move, speak or scream, combined with the sensation that something horrible and otherworldly is lurking! As the room turns blood red and shadow-like figures lurk in crevices, the ability to remain calm is a struggle.

Jodie says of the release: “’I See Only Red’ had been wallowing in a folder for a while, not sure of the direction we should go in with it. The song has a very personal aspect to it lyrically and had gone through a few different iterations before arriving at this final version which has the perfect level of energy and drama that we’ve been looking for.

“Endoflevelbaddie’s production is leaning more into punk territory in sound/production mentality with a healthy dose of rave still! Tracks are quickly concocted with parts recorded quickly to try to keep that raw energy alive and not get bloated with layers and layers of sounds or being over-produced to death. This song shows our continued progression into that way of working, whilst still paying homage to my spoken word background and playful nature.”

With production duties supplied by steadfast ‘king of electro’ Endoflevelbaddie, the sound of ‘Put It Down’ leans more towards punk in terms of attitude (still with a hint of rave mind you) and has been feverishly concocted in the studio to keep it fresh and not bloated with layers of over-produced sounds. Similar to her previous tracks ‘Foefetti’ and ‘Get The Shots In’, ‘Put It Down’ is decidedly light-hearted and a break from the more serious subject matter that Jodie’s explored with some of her music, like mental health and her perceptions of society.

“The song’s inspired by mine & Endoflevelbaddie’s shared disdain of people filming an entire live performance on their phone” says Jodie “I pay good money to see a live act that I adore and the last thing I want is to view it through people’s phone screens. I love being fully involved at gigs and feeling that connection between you and the artists on stage. Getting your phone out for a long period of time is poor gig etiquette… and I’m short so that doesn’t help!”

Co-produced by SPACE (Do Nothing, IDLES), ‘All The Problems’ confronts the crisis of masculinity with one of Shelf Lives’ most gentle, melodic choruses. “Tell me something you like about yourself,” the duo sing softly in unison, evoking a question therapists often ask and most people can’t answer. Seeking the reasons behind male rage, the track balances extreme acts of violence with the jarringly passive way the wider world processes them.

Speaking more on the release of the new single, the duo said: “To be vague about it, ‘All the Problems’ is a casual chat about the suppression of emotions, specifically among those who identify as males and what it could lead to as a result. The track goes through the motions of seeking a reason behind the resulting rage and offsets extreme, sometimes violent, acts with the World’s passive and unsettling way of dealing with them. There’s nothing casual about the topic and events itself, yet, socially we’ve reached a ridiculous, dangerous place where we feel like in order to survive we need to be. Essentially, so we can… “get on with our day”.”

Constantly experimenting with their sound and finding new ways they can bring reality to life, ‘BITE’ is perhaps their most sinister and driving release to date. With a reeling guitar line, thrashing chorus and chant-like verses, ‘BITE’ was written partly about the endless task of “doing the work” on yourself.

“It’s about the battle between your awake spiritual brain that is trying its best to be a better person and to let go of its pride, and catching yourself going back to that angry monkey brain,” the band explains – “That’s why it’s called ‘BITE’, because it’s the most primitive thing we can do when we feel scared.”

But, as with most Shelf Lives songs, its attention is pulled in the opposite direction, alluding to the egomania of chasing enlightenment, only to make you feel like you’re better than everyone else.

Much like the meaning of the song, the song’s accompanying video is primitive and raw. “The idea of having a modern day man losing his mind in the woods to temptation seemed the most fitting, as temptation is what brings us closer to that monkey part of our brain, and our modern mind is what pulls us away,” the band said.

A song about recklessness and regrets, fate and fortune, loneliness and a longing for love, its suggestive lyrics construct a troubling narrative of a near-miss only narrowly evaded. “Let’s drive straight into the fog, All I know is this isn’t love,” lulls Yumi with all the dreaminess of someone sleepwalking into a cul-de-sac, “This could be the last road that I take, No time to go back or contemplate…”

Of ‘Can You Tell’, Yumi AKA Ruby explains: “‘Can You Tell’ was inspired by a very impulsive decision… It could have been the biggest mistake of my life, but luckily it was absolutely fine. This song came out of the sadness from feeling the fear I felt that overcame me when I realised I was no longer in control. Thoughts of what could happen came into my head, and I thought about what I was doing and had to have some words with myself. I lived and learnt that life is not a dream where I can just wake up when it goes bad, so I slowed down after that because trust is something you build in time, and presumption is the mother of all F*** ups!”
