Built with just acoustic strings and Etaoin’s heartfelt, emotional vocals, ‘If You Called’ is laid out like an apology, with a sombre backing and lyrics drenched in regret that the track’s tone is commanded by. Using her songwriting as a way of conveying her experiences, no matter how painful, this new story of heartache is one of her most personal retellings of a failed boy meets girl yet.

“After my first heartbreak I made a pact with myself to never let myself care that much about anyone ever again, but then I met this boy from Ireland. We used to drive through the Irish countryside and walk the beaches and talk for hours in his car, it was literally like shit straight out of a Hannah Montana movie,” says Etaoin, whose ability to reflect on her actions and put them into words is what really makes the story behind the lyrics.

“He was so patient and kind and everything I should have needed, but I was so hurt and scarred that I was too scared to trust any boy and I didn’t want to commit. This caused a lot of issues and nine months in we called it quits. I realised after it all went down that I really put him through hell by pushing him away and acting like I didn’t care all the time.”

Joining the EP is the new single ‘If I Ever Find Home’, a Brad Ellis produced heart-on-sleeve lesson in melancholia that sees Etaoin at her most vulnerable and intimate yet.

Speaking of the new single, Etaoin said: “I wrote ‘If I Ever Find Home’ about my first heartbreak. The song is about feeling totally alone and lost. I wrote it at a time when I felt like I had been searching in the dark for months just trying to find my old self again after things ended with the first boy I ever loved. We had been best friends for years, he had told me he had feelings for me but ultimately chose another girl over me. I lost my best friend and the person I cared about so much all in one. School was a total nightmare, I’d see them around making out in the hallway and literally wanted to curl up and disappear.

“The thing that I think everyone finds hardest about their first heartbreak, is that since you’ve never felt pain like that before you don’t know if it’s gonna get better. So you end up searching for them in the faces of strangers on the underground, calling them drunk, keeping your friends up on the phone obsessing over everything that went wrong, deleting their number in anger and then regretting it because you miss them way more than you could ever hate them. It completely breaks you down and then builds you back up into a new, more guarded person.”

The last track to be released before her EP this year, the single is fast-paced with Etaoin’s powerful belting vocals and sweetened falsettos that lead the acoustic riffs through the verses. Written with songwriters Edd Holloway and Nick Atkinson, ‘I Hate Everyone (but I don’t mind you)’ is about going around and around in a relationship before realising that you’re the problem, and working out how to fix it.

“I remember at the time I was stuck in a situation with this guy who they’d seen me go round and round in circles with for MONTHS,” says Etaoin, who met with Edd and Nick to get some advice. “I went in to hang out with them one day and we were talking about the confusion of the situation. They both started laughing and they said ‘Etaoin, you are the problem here. You’re flirting with his friends and giving mixed signals. You guys need to sit down and just have a conversation.’ And I was like DAMN. I realised it was me, I was the problem. So we decided to write a song about it.”

Telling the real life story of a hazy night at a party where Etaoin endured the heart-breaking pains of unrequited love, ‘Cold Blood’ is presented as a narration of the whole evening, moving forward as the song progresses. With her stunning vocal performance which takes her voice to angelic highs and intense lows, the instrumentation is kept intimate, with a soothing guitar accompaniment joining the singer, keeping the focus on her soaring performance. Reflecting the pain of the night in the melancholic lyrics, you can hear Etaoin talking about “binning off” the situation towards the end as the themes of young love, angst, and dread all come together.

Speaking about the song, Etaoin says: “I’d been talking to this guy who I had been close friends with for ages. Days before the party he had told me he had really strong feelings for me. I remember arriving at the party and being so excited to see him, but as the night progressed he was spending the whole night trying to get together with another girl. I remember seeing him walking up to the bedroom with her and I was so angry and hurt. I just wanted to grab my stuff and leave the party, but at the same time I wanted to stay to see if my worst predictions came true. They did.”
