Sex Robots bookends an incredibly successful run of single releases, neatly packaged into one five-track record. The EP is an alternative soundtrack depicting a dystopian world already creeping into everyday life. It’s a world where instead of seeing a fellow human being, a man sees something he feels entitled to and something that has a price tag, as portrayed on ‘What Yours Is Mine’. ‘Toolish’ illustrates how combating this unwanted male attention continues to be dangerous for women, while ‘Depleted’ characterises how, post-childbirth, women are expected to uphold the impossible pressures of body image.

The final single to be taken from Sex Robots is ‘Broken Bones’, a track where Femegades continue to espouse their socially conscious values. ‘Broken Bones’ challenges a culture of over medicalisation (particularly in response to what would be natural reactions to trauma), and the commercialisation and exploitation of how people’s lives are negatively affected by social issues outside of their control. Sonically, ‘Broken Bones’ showcases a band on top of their game, and is yet another raging, breathless, triumph of modern rock music.

‘Toolish’, is another illustration of Femegades willingness to approach challenging subject matter without fear or favour. It is a song that is dedicated to anyone who has been unable to combat unwanted attention from that guy. ‘Toolish’ also aims to serve as a wake up call to any individual expressing opinions such as “why didn’t she just fight back?”

‘Toolish’ exemplifies all that is good about Femegades: passionate, visceral, hooky, grungey and rebellious. A subtle, undulating track, Toolish builds throughout as grooving baselines, soaring guitar notes and an intense drum beat is complimented by singer Em’s powerful vocal.

Femegades make a welcome return as they release the scuzzy ‘Depleted,’ their first single of 2023. ‘Depleted’ is an explosive, high-energy puck-rock song exploring certain realities of motherhood. There is a pressure placed upon women to savour every aspect of motherhood, even though the reality of non-stop mental and physical hardship often leads many mothers to burn out. Despite this, it’s a subject that is still regarded as taboo, with society placing unrealistic expectations on mothers who ’should just be happy’.

Latest single ‘Daddy Says’ is an illustration of Femegades eclectic approach to songwriting. Taken from forthcoming EP Not All Men, the track is a departure from the band’s recent single releases – the fuzz-filled, acerbic soundscapes of ‘Speechless’ and the fiery, thought-provoking lyricism of ‘Be Alone’.

A warm, beautifully delivered ballad characterised by chiming guitar notes, a gentle rhythm section and the sumptuous tones of vocalist Em, the track is juxtaposed by the powerful subject matter. ‘Daddy Says’ tells the story of a father encouraging his daughter into the sex industry, the lyrics taking the listener on a journey of lost innocence and coercion, throwing a light on the hypocrisy of the husband-and-father sex-buyer. The track highlights Femegades refusal to shy away from tackling hard hitting subjects deserving of a voice in the world.

Having earned an honorary Riot GRRRL badge with their debut EP Pornsick, the latest offering Not All Men picks up right where they left off. The Not All Men EP shows Femegades have no fear in delving into subjects others won’t touch, through their unique brand of militant, melodic punk-rock.

Second single from the EP ‘Be Alone’ is a great motivational song, it’s fast and urgent, and gives the listener a feeling of empowerment in overcoming a desperate situation. “The song explores one angle of surrogacy,” explain the band. “While it has become more accessible nowadays to go through this process, often it is not as simple as a monetary transaction. Written through the eyes of a surrogate mother it becomes apparent that there’s a lot more emotional attachment than anticipated and the aftermath can sometimes be taxing on her. This is to bring awareness that this is not a decision to be taken lightly and to consider the ramifications it may have on a surrogate mother’s mental health.”
