‘Hotel TV’ follows last month’s ‘Moth Song.’ In keeping with Now Would Be A Good Time’s chronicling of the brutally familiar moments at the end of relationships, ‘Hotel TV’ is a hypnotic, late-night reverie about “having a sex dream about somebody else while next to your partner, and your partner being a liar,” explains Pilkington. At the song’s conclusion Pilkington sings: “Cause I lay beside him / In the night / And I had a filthy dream / To the noise of the hotel TV.”

Of the song’s video, Pilkington says, “Our vibe check for the music video was dire country town, bored and cheeky, loosely inspired by both our childhoods and what we’ve had to do for fun touring regional Australia.”

Listening to Folk Bitch Trio, it’s clear this is a band of three distinct points of view. Pilkington grew up with two musician parents and brings formative memories of watching them perform, of listening to Gillian Welch and Lucinda Williams, and of her own imagined path as a career musician. Peverelle spends their spare time making art and furniture; those hobbies, as well as their love of pop music old and new, articulate a love for the tactile, the home-grown and the hand-made. Sinclair is the self-proclaimed jester of the group, but her taste skews dark, gothic, baroque and dramatic, expressed as a love of opera and ballet as well as musicians as wide-ranging as Patti Smith, Nirvana and Tchaikovsky. They’ve known each other since high school, and as soon as they started singing together five years ago, “the chemistry of being inspired by each other was evident from the get-go,” says Sinclair.

Following the “acidic and gorgeous” (Beats Per Minute) lead single ‘The Actor,’ new single, ‘Cathode Ray,’ opens with caution, its first harmonies arriving in big, looping sighs. It’s vulnerable but a little menacing, with a wide open chorus and a spacious, airy beat anchoring everything. Lyrically, the song is about bodily, deeply human anxieties. “It expresses a feeling of being trapped in myself, and wanting to break out of that so violently that I’m literally talking about opening up a body viscerally,” Sinclair explains. “It’s about frustration, and knowing there’s no cheap thrill that’s going to fix that.”

As they explain it, ‘The Actor’ is a song about “falling hard and fast and breaking down quick too,” through lyrics that “flow down from affectionate details you notice about someone when falling in love, fighting and fucking, and ultimately the demise of a relationship at your partner’s solo theatre play.” The song’s accompanying video was co-directed by Bridgette Winten and the band.

The trio explain, “‘God’s A Different Sword’ speaks to relinquishing a pattern, but indulging in the habit ‘just one more time’. The song was produced by us and Tom Healy during a fleeting stop in Auckland, Aotearoa this winter, while we were in town supporting Ben Howard. The lyrics are exasperated and questioning, so we wanted them to be held by instrumentation that is optimistic and open. The video, made by our dear friend Bridgette Winten, shows us gallivanting around our stomping grounds in Naarm, where this song was written and born.”
