Renowned for their powerful live performances and deeply personal songwriting, Future Palace have established themselves as one of the most exciting forces in modern alternative metal. I caught up with frontwoman Maria Lessing to chat about the inspiration behind Resurgence, embracing change, experimenting with their sound and the connection they share with audiences both on and off the stage.

For anyone discovering Future Palace for the first time here, how would you describe the band and what you’re all about?

“I would describe us as an authentic and emotional post hardcore /metalcore /alternative band who love using synths as well and writing hooky chorus lines. We have published 3 records about mental health and that will be followed by ou 4^th album now as well, so that is a very central topic for us, such as also other themes, that are not often talked about in the metal scene.”

Your fourth album, Resurgence, explores isolation, self-doubt and rebuilding yourself. What did creating this record teach you about yourselves, both individually and as a band?

“It taught me that I am capable of more than I told myself with our past album. After touring and being a bit burned out by trying our best to make this band our main income for like 8 years (and we still have some jobs on the side) you can lose energy and motivation and somehow also hope in yourself. I tried to regain energy, change systems, improve as a singer, artist and human and overall, we put our mental wellbeing as an almost number 1 focus now, because no matter how famous you get, if you’re unhappy, the fundament of the system will break at some point – and also what’s the point of doing something that doesn’t make you happy? I think this album just brought me a lot of joy for music and being in a band again”.

‘Resurge’ imagines what it would be like to completely start over and become a different person. Is that idea something you’ve personally wrestled with, or was it more of a creative concept?

“Completely. I had many doubts about myself and my life choices, especially with my career as a musician, since it also comes with a lot of challenges and sacrifices behind the scenes. I never had a plan B because music was always mit plan A and my full passion. When I realized that a goal and “obsession” won’t fix your problems, won’t automatically make you happy and feel like you “arrived” where you belong, my world shattered a bit. It was like a hard slap in the face. My life goal has changed from “I want to be a musician and live from it” to “yes that would be nice, but my life goal is being happy”. Though I still had my thoughts and questions about “what if”.”

Musically, ‘Resurge’ introduces some fresh nu metal influences to your sound. How much fun was it experimenting with new textures while still keeping that unmistakable Future Palace identity?

“When I listened to it when Manuel sent the first Demo of the instrumental, I was like: oh yeah, that will be fun live. I think Nu Metal is just a natural fit for us, we had some elements of it in our past songs already and we always have a strong 2000’s vibe in our music, so I think it just worked easy.”

The story from ‘Deep Blue’ continues into the ‘Resurge’ video. How important is visual storytelling to the world you’re building around your music?

“It carries the music completely. It was fun to have two songs so connected, we never did that before, the ideas alls came to me naturally and I love it when that happens, while brushing my teeth I just had the idea for the entire Resurge Video and how it could be connected to Deep Blue. I already thought about a potential Seuqel for Deep Blue after we shot the video. I always have visual on my mind while writing also.”

You’re known for balancing crushing heaviness with huge melodic moments. How do you decide when a song needs to hit hard and when it needs to give listeners a moment to breathe?

“That depends on the topic really. Also, Manuel writes the instrumentals and oftentimes sets the mood with that, but we had moments where we made a breakdown longer, changed the chords or the key entirely to make it heavier, depending on what topic I decide to write about. It’s always extremely important to me to get the listener as close as possible to the real feeling I had while writing. We also had songs where we cut out the screams and entire parts completely in the studio, because it just didn’t fit the energy in the end.”

You’ve built a reputation as an incredible live band, with sold-out shows and international touring. What do you hope people feel when they leave a Future Palace show?

“Future Palace Shows are supposed to be a safe space to just feel. Cry, sing, shout, mosh and hug each other. There are so little spaces in our world where we can truly be ourselves and feel without being judged. It’s a confrontation and a party at the same time. I want people to feel connected to their feelings when they leave our show. Of course, I also try to be a good singer but the best compliment will ever be, when someone opens up about how much they were touched by a speech or were able to cry to a song and release some stress.”

Finally, Resurgence is ultimately about finding strength after despair. What do you hope listeners take away from the album once they’ve experienced it from start to finish?

“That they can become much more than who they are right now. We have so much more potential inside of us and especially mental illnesses like depression try to talk us down and put us in a self-build cage. We can change every day and we can become better versions of ourselves. A Resurgence of ourselves.”

“We decided to film a music video for this track because we wanted to give the song a life beyond just the sound” says lead vocalist Charlotte Marlen Midtun. “Music is powerful on its own, but sometimes the emotions and stories we write about deserve to be seen as well as heard. The video lets us share the atmosphere, the energy, and the message in a way that words and melodies alone can’t always capture. For the darker and more intense parts of the song, we leaned into shadowy, low-key lighting to create tension and intimacy. It gave the impression of being pulled into the raw emotion of the lyrics. When the music opened up—whether with hope, energy, or release—we shifted toward warmer tones and brighter contrasts, symbolizing light breaking through.”

Alternative metal band ODC are pleased to share their new single, ‘Twisted Love’, title track of the upcoming album, out on October 31 via BLKIIBLK.

With ‘Twisted Love’, ODC deliver a bold crossover between modern rock, metalcore intensity, and rap flow. The track combines crushing 8-string riffs and infectious grooves with the striking vocal interplay of bassist/rapper Sonny’s razor-sharp verses and frontwoman Célia’s soaring melodic hooks. Vocalist Célia Do described the track by saying: “’Twisted Love’ is about contradictions – attraction and destruction, sweetness and brutality. When two of Germany’s most energetic rock and metal acts come together, the result can only be something loud, wild and powerful: April Art and League Of Distortion have released the single ‘Double Trouble’ together – including an official music video.

The track impresses with its powerful production, fat riffs and two distinctive voices that blend perfectly: Lisa-Marie Watz (April Art) and Anna Brunner (Ace) (League Of Distortion). Even on first listen, it’s clear that this song will tear the roof off live.

Germany’s Future Palace are making major moves to catapult their already promising career to the next level. The German band is thrilled to announce that it has signed with Century Media Records worldwide. To celebrate the partnership, they have shared the video for the new single ‘Cyclone’.

“’Cyclone’ is about the war that often wages within oneself, with the band saying, “It’s about how an old version of yourself kept fighting you, especially referring to depression and how draining it can be to avoid turning back into that old version and trying to represent some sort of rebirth of yourself, focusing on the self-conflict. A cyclone tries to rip you apart and invade your peace and can be almost impossible to fight against.”

The themes of mental health, growing and healing, distancing yourself from past versions of yourself have long been a part of Future Palace’s music and that continues with ‘Cyclone’. The song’s energy effectively mirrors the effort it takes to prevent yourself from reverting to the old you that you would like to leave behind.

The band shares, “We used a sample with the word ‘amen,’ which started just as an and was later interpreted by as a sign of rebirth — amen and goodbye to your old self.” It also boasts the most monstrous breakdown the band has ever put to tape. [via Metal Heads Forever]

Amira Elfeky has just shared a brand-new single, ‘Hold Onto Me.’

The track – which was produced by Daniel Braunstein (Spiritbox, Fit For A King) and Robbie Gardunio – follows March’s Surrender EP, and arrives as Amira’s first-ever U.S. headline run begins tonight, September 12.

Speaking to Kerrang! over the summer about her sound, she explained that, “I never claim to be any specific genre, just because I love exploring. Nu-metal does have a very distinct sound, and some of my songs do incorporate it, but I don’t consider myself fully nu-metal.”

Amira added of working on new music: “Being able to push myself is the number one thing. Anyone can make a good rock song – but nowadays there’s so much music, you have to stand out.”

Finnish melodic metal band Unén proudly unveil their first official single and video, ‘My Love’s Broken’. “After countless disappointments in relationships, one becomes numb and cold… There is nothing left to give to another person, and yet the endless search for the perfect person continues. It’s always easier to leave everything behind and start anew”, says singer Stina Girs about the song. The band describes the concept behind the video: “The main character starts sculpting a vision of perfection, only to shatter it, symbolizing the disappointments in love and relationships. Piece by piece, she starts tearing it apart. At this stage, the mood of the performance shots also changes, and crumbling clay begins to fall on the band members”. “Around the visual storytelling, we see super slow motion shots of the band and Stina’s vocal parts, which are filmed both in slow motion and at normal speed. Talented Brazilian Rock band Malvada unveil their new single and video, ‘Down The Walls’, out now via Frontiers Music Srl. Talking about the single, singer Indira Castilho says “’Down the walls’ is a song that describes a relationship based on lies and psychological control. It tells about a situation that many women go through but that is never discussed. The music aims to show the reality, alert women and bring courage to face this situation”. “The riffs are very heavy, rhythmic and connected to the drums”, adds guitarist Bruna Tsuruda. Drummer Juliana Salgado describes it as “a strong music, with strong guitar riffs and drum beats”, while bassist Rafaela Reoli states “I think it’s the perfect song to introduce Malvada to the world”.

Rap metal sensation Sicksense – featuring vocalists Vicky Psarakis (ex-The Agonist) and Robby J. Fonts (Stuck Mojo) – have released their new single, ‘On Repeat’. Check out the official video below. The band’s Earache Records debut, Cross Me Twice, will be released on February 14, 2025.

Arch Enemy have unveiled their first new music since their acclaimed 2022 album, Deceivers, by surprise releasing the new single and video ‘Dream Stealer.’ The veteran extreme metal band’s guitarist Michael Amott stated, “First new Arch Enemy song we release in a little while and it feels good to be back! It was a blast working on ‘Dream Stealer’ in the studio, this song just has the high energy and twisted atmosphere that makes it so fun to play! Crank it up, loud and heavy! Metal is immortal!” After a haunting instrumental intro, singer Alissa White-Gluz kicks off the vocals with a monster scream, and goes full guttural for the rest of the powerful track. FUTURE PALACE have released a new music video. The new music video, for the track ‘Decarabia,’ is taken from the German post-hardcore band’s upcoming new album, Distortion, which is scheduled to be released in September this year, via Arising Empire. The band have dedicated the new single to the relationships of people who are suffering from mental illnesses. The picture the band paints of this difficult circumstance is engagingly complex and asks fundamental questions: How much can we help the loved ones around us when we ourselves are already dealing with so many of our own demons? How can we not be alone in our struggles when at the same time we see how it becomes too much for our counterpart? “It’s not just bad if you yourself lose joy in life. It hurts all the more when you find out that a loved person has to deal with it,” vocalist Maria Lessing explains, reporting on experiences that come from her own life. “It’s a struggle to try to support someone when you need all your strength to be able to function. But in the end you can resolve even such serious problems with work and growth and become happy together. In any case, I hope so.” [via Distorted Sound]

Just over a month out from Jinjer’s next U.S. tour, the Ukrainian prog-metal crushers have dropped a surprise single that may well pop into their upcoming setlists. The song, titled ‘Someone’s Daughter,’ arrives as a percussively punishing, and spirit-empowering battle anthem. The studio track finds the act once again needling into precision drum battery, bassist Eugene Kostyuk’s slippery fretwork, and vocalist Tatiana Shmayluk’s cascade of immaculate melodies and rumbling death-growls. The music video, which you can see below, mixes performance footage with CGI landscapes. With its lyrics themed around cutting a signature path in the world as a woman, Shmayluk also gets into character while seemingly dressing up as iconic figures like chemist Marie Curie or Egyptian ruler Cleopatra. “´Someone’s Daughter´ is an artistic attempt to cast the light on the inner world of women, who in various scenarios and circumstances, have had to choose a path that was historically made by men,” the singer said in a statement. “In a world where women are often underestimated and overlooked, they are still powerful heroes who navigate hardship with strength and resilience, unapologetically becoming themselves and breaking barriers in the face of the challenges that face them. ‘Someone’s Daughter’ celebrates transitions from naivety into wisdom, weakness into force, unwavering determination, and fearlessness as our mothers, sisters, daughters, and wives walk through adversity and fight for better change. Criminal activity and psychology has been at the forefront of SKYND’s music from the start, observing the bleakest and most horrific aspects of the human condition through musical and lyrical examinations of true crimes and their impact on the victims and society. Marking the duo’s second single of 2024, ‘Violets are Blue’ looks at the 2012 murder of Jun Lin by Luka Magnotta, with Skynd and Father saying that the case points out the severity of mental health issues and the importance of recognizing and addressing them before they lead to violence, as well as the ethical responsibilities of the media and the criminal justice system. Jun Lin was an international student at Concordia University in Montreal, studying computer engineering; he was stabbed and dismembered by Luka Rocco Magnotta, who mailed parts of Lin’s body to schools and political party offices, as well as posted videos online depicting the murder – this has led to him being referred to as an “Internet Killer.” Magnotta was arrested in Berlin less than a month later, and was sentenced two years later to life and an additional 19 years for other charges such as sexual assault, animal abuse, and public obscenity – during his trial, issues of his mental stability were raised, including diagnoses of schizophrenia and several personality disorders. As Lin was a gay man, SKYND has also pointed out the purpose of ‘Violets are Blue’ to discuss the impact such crimes have on the LGBTQ+ community. “This case brought attention to issues of violence within the community and the unique vulnerabilities faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and it therefore felt very important for me to explore,” Skynd says, pointing out the importance of standing up for diversity in the band’s music. Italian metal masters Lacuna Coil have unveiled a new single titled ‘Hosting the Shadow’ featuring guest vocals from Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe. The song marks another new stand-alone single from Lacuna Coil, who earlier this year unveiled the track ‘In the Mean Time’ featuring New Years Day singer Ash Costello. While Lacuna Coil are already known for their dual vocal attack from Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro, Blythe takes the band’s sound to a new extreme. After an extended instrumental intro, the Lamb of God singer’s voice is heard first on the song, as he delivers his signature growl in the verses, where he is eventually joined by Ferro. Scabbia’s clean singing then arrives in the melodic chorus. “‘Hosting the Shadow’ is a trip through light and dark, where silence reveals its hidden secrets,” stated Lacuna Coil. “Obscure moments can become occasions to evolve, to learn to master one’s own shadow — which is crucial in order to prevail. Randy Blythe did an incredible job on this track, we absolutely adore his voice and his evil laugh!” The band continued, “Our admiration for him is infinite and to have him as a guest on this song is a dream come true. Partnering with a friend you respect immensely, that also kicks ass on stages around the world: it doesn’t get any better than this. Stand Atlantic have shared a new single, ‘FRENEMIES’. The new track explores the theme of complicated friendships, as lead singer Bonnie Fraser explains: “FRENEMIES is about rocky friendships and not knowing where you stand with someone. We’ve thrown it back a lil more in this track for the OG fans stylistically but in a fresh lil way.” It’s a cut from new album WAS HERE, due August 23, which represents an evolution in Stand Atlantic’s sound, pushing into darker, heavier, and more experimental territory. Stand Atlantic have released a new single from their upcoming album. ‘CRIMINAL’, a collaboration with Polaris, is the latest cut from WAS HERE. The full-length is set for release on August 23 via Hopeless Records, and has already been teased by early singles ‘LOVE U ANYWAY’ and ‘GIRL$ (Feat. PVRIS and Bruses)’. “’Criminal’ is a small insight into how it can feel to be in this industry,” Bonnie Fraser explains. “It sometimes feels like you gotta keep your life a certain level of fucked up, so you can make art that comes from a real place. I found myself wanting to invite the pain in and sometimes go looking for it… just to create some cool shit that gets sold by people, who at times may not give a damn about how you got there.” On collaborating with Polaris, she adds: “It felt so right to have Polaris on this track. Dan and I personally bonded over this exact topic on a night out, after the song was already written so it felt like fate. Oceans of Slumber have officially unveiled their upcoming album Where Gods Fear to Speak, and dropped a performance video for the second single, ‘Poem of Ecstasy.’ The track puts the band’s signature dark and cinematic style on full display, and strings together numerous standout moments, sorta giving the feel of a mini-epic. We got haunting vocals and a smooth piano entrance, with a transition to doom-laden power metal, culminating with death growls and blast beats, in some sort of a “dystopian grindcore”. Fresh from her Download Festival set – which not only etched HARPER into its history books as the festival’s youngest ever performer but marked her first ever live show – now the astonishing 12-year-old vocalist releases a brand new track, ‘Bird In A Cage.’ ‘Bird In A Cage’ was co-written by Leo Valeri (Brand Of Sacrifice) and Ben Lumber (Acres). Valeri performed all instrumentation on the single. Harper enthuses, “’Bird In A Cage’ was written about feeling trapped and alone and being let down by the people who are close to you. This song is different to any song I’ve done before and I really wanted to show I can do more than just scream. It’s possibly my favourite song I’ve done to date!” [via Metal Planet]

FUTURE PALACE have released a new music video. The new music video, for the track ‘Dreamstate’, is taken from the German post-hardcore band’s upcoming new album, Distortion, which is scheduled to be released in September this year, via Arising Empire. The band collaborated with Pavel Trebukhin once again for the Dreamstate music video, returning to Riga, Latvia. “At first, I actually intended to write a piano ballad,” says guitarist Manuel Kohlert about the new song. “But the song quickly became much harder.” Vocalist Maria Lessing adds, “it’s now one of my favourite songs on our new album.” The organic development process of the song, in which quiet sounds were ultimately overtaken by massive anger, can perhaps even be read symbolically – after all, the vocalist was also thinking about her career as a musician, which sometimes seems just as overwhelming. “Very often I lack the strength to see it all through,” she continues. “I think many people can empathise with this feeling of being overwhelmed in our performance-oriented society.” [via Distorted Sound]

DEFENCES have released a track. ‘The Almost’, is the brand new single from the Hertfordshire-based alternative metal band and follows on from their previous single, ‘Gold In The Dark’, which was released last month. Speaking about the new song, the band says, “with ‘The Almost’ we wanted to dive into the dangers of comparing yourself and your achievements to the people around you. It is all too easy to see the often manipulated, idyllic versions of people’s lives on social media and come to the conclusion that you’re missing out, that you’re not living life to the fullest. To be stuck in a place where you feel like your life has not begun is a horrible and unnecessary feeling, and we wanted to put a name to it. That’s where ‘The Almost’ comes in. [via Distorted Sound]

As London based, Berlin artist Mimi Barks draws ever closer to the long-awaited release of her debut album THIS IS DOOM TRAP, she now unveils a brand-new single, ‘MONTANA’, featuring Yeti Bones of the American rap-punk duo Ho99o9. The relentless track, which flips from English vocals to Mimi Barks’ native German, is the third single released from the upcoming album, following her vulnerable single ‘BANSHEE’ and the album announcement single ‘FSU’ (short for Fuck Shit Up). Alongside the new single, Mimi Barks provides the following message, “Power through betrayal. Ambition through hopelessness. Every tear my teacher and I’m fueled by the hatred. Great grief births empowerment and this song is the testament. An untold truth. A restlessness so deeply anchored in my subconscious, a calling so deeply felt that only my mother tongue could translate this reality within me.” Continuing to talk about the music video for ‘MONTANA’, Barks mentions, “We linked up for this video shoot in Berlin, while Ho99o9 were on tour with Carpenter Brut and Perturbator.”

Seven Spires shares ‘The Old Hurt of Being Left Behind,’ the third single from their upcoming studio album A Fortress Called Home to be released June 21 via Frontiers Music Srl. The track is accompanied by a new music video. Frontwoman Adrienne Cowan had this to share about the track: “This was the first song we wrote for A Fortress Called Home. It grew from a poignant piano piece from my idea vault, and was rooted in the music and story of Edward Elgar’s ‘Sospiri, op. 70.’ It’s a piece that I often felt sounded like the pain of falling in love. And — I find there is something so fragile and quietly beautiful in the wrenching agony of truly baring one’s soul to another. Inspired by that juxtaposition, Jack and I brought our best to capture hope in pain, melody in chaos, and that softness in brutality. Basically, I think the title says it all.”

Harajuku-core innovators HANABIE. are asking us to “hold tight to this moment” with their latest single, a friends-celebrating bit of genre-jamming metal-pop called ‘GIRL’S TALK.’ Following the Japanese outfit’s anime-and-video-games-hailing ‘OTAKU Lovely Densetsu’ single from earlier in the year, ‘GIRL’S TALK’ is a guitars-and-death-scream-loaded banger about an “ultra-boozy” night out with your inner circle, where you’re ordering shots and jumpin’ into hot goss. “Isn’t it a very precious time for people of any age to meet with friends after a long time and reminisce about their past?” vocalist Yukina commented. “It’s nice to have someone to share stories with and I would be happy if HANABIE. can be included in everyone’s ‘talks.'” The band further added that the new single is a “more mature” version of the band — “not only a cute song” is how drummer Chika puts it — and comes full of stylistic pivots, raps, and energy. Closely following their recently wrapped and highly successful tour of North America, VISIONS OF ATLANTIS are back at sea to release their stunning second single, ‘Monsters,’ taken from their upcoming album, Pirates II – Armada, set for release on July 5 via Napalm Records. Charismatic Dutch singer/songwriter Charlotte Wessels has announced details of her new album The Obsession, due for release on September 20 via Napalm Records. Wessels has also released a video for her new single, the haunting ‘The Exorcism’. First single ‘The Exorcism’ is an astonishing proof of Wessels‘ matchless talent and genre-bending songwriting qualities and, on top marks, the heaviest solo offering she has released so far. Quietly drawing the listener into this sonic sphere, the song bursts into a heavy attack shortly after. German trio Future Palace have released a video for their brand new single ‘Uncontrolled’, out now via Arising Empire. The track is the band’s first new music in almost a year. Our entire existence demands control – it seems all the more shocking when the feeling of self-control suddenly seems to disappear. In their new single, Future Palace set exactly this almost unbearable state of a slipping self to music and rely on some of the most powerful sonic contrasts that they have ever unleashed in their entire discography. “‘Uncontrolled’ was created in 2022 and was written almost at the same time as the song ‘Malphas’, which not only has a similarly heavy musical tone as the new single, but also lyrically speaks of a struggle with oneself.” The words with which singer Maria Lessing describes the experiences that gave rise to ‘Uncontrolled’ also sound correspondingly agitated. “The loss of control in the title primarily relates to one’s own mental health and one’s own decision-making ability“, she says. “You can no longer manage to get up in the morning and have to constantly regain your strength. You can no longer manage to meet deadlines or function at all. ‘Uncontrolled’ represents what it feels like when everything falls apart and seems hopeless. ‘Uncontrolled’ is driven by remarkably riff-focused instrumentals that would do even Slipknot credit.
