“‘Split Lip’ and ‘Some Kind of Angel’ are depictions of my masculine and feminine counterparts. The songs and their visual worlds express how it feels to engage in intimacy through these two lenses,” Georgia explains. “The soft gentleness of some kind of angel vs. the stoic, and at times aggressive, nature of split lip. Although these two parts of myself are inseparable it was fun to play with the contrast between them.”

Both tracks arrive with visuals from frequent collaborator Silken Weinberg (Ethel Cain, Skullcrusher) who says “‘We knew we wanted to use the double release as an opportunity to show two sides of the same coin, like two opposing forces that fuse and connect; it’s tension that often keeps things in place. Clayton Mccraken approached these videos with a lot of care and beautifully reworked rather vulnerable footage, distorting and enhancing it until it felt like Georgia’s inner world. To me, the visuals resemble the scary parallel feelings of falling in love, or embarking on a trip that could go one of two ways.”

Georgia Gets By, the project of New Zealand’s Georgia Nott (BROODS), shares ‘Madeline,’ her alluring and captivating new single for Luminelle Recordings. The song’s soulful yearning builds to a flooding of outsized emotion, expressing the inescapable feeling when you meet someone who transforms your life. “’Madeline’ is about the moment you meet someone that you know will change you. You feel it in the deepest place inside your stomach and become completely choice-less in your feelings for them,” Nott explains. The song is brought to life via its cinematic video directed by Silken Weinberg. “I made the video for ‘Madeline’ with Silken Weinberg; my favourite person to create visual worlds with, for her ability to capture drama in a way that is equally playful and devastating. We were watching a bunch of Hitchcock movies and became especially obsessed with Spellbound. Inspired by the trailers for his films, and the way they are a window into a much bigger story, we wanted to make ‘Madeline’ into that window. Just a glimpse of a world where ‘Madeline’ could be anything from a ghost, an idea or a hallucination. It’s really up to the viewer,” Nott adds.

After a few years’ worth of some nice EPs and singles, Los Angeles-via-Richmond musician Kate Bollinger is finally sharing her debut LP Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind in September. She released the lead single ‘Any Day Now’ last month, and she’s back now with another one called ‘To Your Own Devices.’ ‘To Your Own Devices’ is a dreamy slow-burner that feels like basking in the sun. It’s got a ’60s singer-songwriter sound to it, too, which compliments the accompanying vintage-looking music video. Here’s what Bollinger said about it: “When I first moved to Los Angeles, I came across a book of old Japanese designs called MOGA, a catchword meaning “modern girls” that was used to describe fashionable city women who embraced westernized modes and manners in the 1920s. In the book I found a surrealist design that depicted a woman, underwater with fish swimming around her, wearing a beautiful costume, and stirring a giant fish bowl like a pot of soup, and I knew immediately that I wanted to recreate the scene for the album cover. I wrote a script for the music video and brought in filmmaker Nikki Milan Houston as my co-director and set designer. We brought in Odie Summers as set fabricator and in a friend’s studio downtown, a kitchen set was built over several days and came to life because of the distinctive skills and devotion of everyone involved.” [via Stereogum]

Macedo —the BIPOC and LGBTQ songwriting duo composed of twin sisters Melissa and Michelle Macedo — return using their natural sibling connection and otherworldly creative bond to create a fun new single ‘Optimistic’ equally steeped in 80’s pop and synth-wave mystique. For the Macedo sisters, music started at the beginning. ‘Optimistic’ takes on a modern spin of 80s synth-pop that garners instant earworm status. After all, sisters just want to have fun. The simple, yet effective lyrics impress feelings of hope and positivity. “I don’t have to be afraid of anything in this life,” sings Macedo. “‘Optimistic’ is about making the most out of the one life we’ve got to live!”

Peggy Gou has released a new video for ‘Lobster Telephone’. It’s a cut from her just-released debut album I Hear You, out now via XL Recordings, which also features previous cuts ‘(It Goes Like) Nanana’, Lenny Kravitz collaboration ‘I Believe in Love Again’ and ‘1+1=11’. A press release explains: “Starring Peggy herself and directed by Japanese filmmaker Alice Kunisue, it’s the perfect visual to accompany the Salvadore Dali-inspired song; a playful video sees the viewer transported into a surreal parallel realm via textured cinematography, costumes and a unique environment as a troupe of mesmerised, infatuated dancers vie for the attention of a lobster goddess.” [via Dork]

Los Angeles-via-Paris pop voyagers Pearl & The Oysters – the duo of Juliette Pearl Davis (Juju) and Joachim Polack (Jojo) – return with a new song ‘Side Quest’ via Stones Throw. The song marks a cathartic release for Polack. In an attempt to counter his worry about processing a family illness, together he and Davis channel his feelings into pure jazz-pop joy resulting in some of the happiest chord progressions and melodies the duo has yet to conjure. In Polack’s words, he says, “I thought, this has to be the poppiest thing I’ll ever do. I wanted to do that purely as a therapeutic outlet. As it evolved, the lyrics came to embody the expression of estrangement “as we navigate a world that can often feelalien and demented.” ‘Side Quest’ is also accompanied by a music video today directed by Ginger Root-collaborator David M. Gutel and Tayler Nicholson, inspired by the surrealism of Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. Grammy-winning artist, DAYA released her new single titled ‘Don’t Fall’ this week. The track is an emotional pop ballad that allows the young superstar to experiment with the various genres of electronic production elements. The song ‘Don’t Call’ is about trying to get over someone you love. The lyrics of the song are quite relatable and her soulful and ethereal voice does total justice to the melody. The instrumental elements are also nicely adjusted in the song. The song begins with soft and natural chords and moves into a light drum and bass at the peak of most parts of the track. DAYA says the following about her track “‘Don’t Call’ has had this magical pull ever since we created it and I’m so excited for it to be out. Georgia Gets By, the project of New Zealand’s Georgia Nott (BROODS), shares a video for ‘When All You Can Manage Is A Sigh,’ a gorgeous and quietly devastating new single. “I wrote this song for a friend a few years ago while they were navigating a divorce. There are those moments where thinking can’t balance out the feelings. You can rationalize all you want but you are still there, holding that enormous heavy sensation that no words can describe,” Georgia explains. “There, on the other side of falling in love, looking around at empty space and wondering whether you can bear to try it all again. This song is a parting gift of some sorts; something to fill the emptiness for a couple of minutes. As Imogen Heap says ‘there is beauty in the breakdown’.”

Gustaf, the Brooklyn no wave / post-punk band announced their debut album last month and now they are back with a double single and video for ‘Here Hair / Hard Hair.’ The first is a brooding, slow-motion growl peppered by birdsong and stabbed by pinpricks of guitar, while its chaser, ‘Hard Hair,’ is 45-second outburst of energy, invective and regret. The songs were produced and mixed by Erin Tonkon with initial production from Carlos Hernandez. Its accompanying video directed by the band’s own Lydia Gammill, features the band wigged out among heart shaped hair brushes and roses.

Manchester’s finest alt-punks The Empty Page just released a gritty new video, calling out the ‘Cock of the Fifth Year’. “Cock of the fifth year is what we called the biggest jock types when I was in high school. Cocky, brash loud and overly confident. Puffed up and swaggering and often quite intimidating. I liked the name for a song and wrote it initially about a cartoonish bloke who unselfconsciously uses up all the space available and makes others feel shoved out of the way. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of blokes like that I encounter when walking around my home city of Manchester. Swaggering, mouthy bellends who can be pretty intimidating when you’re a woman just trying to get from A to B. I was thinking about the idea that being a big deal in high school is the peak of some people’s lives. I hated school with a passion and my own life has got better and better as my school days have receded in the rearview. Babehoven will return with a new album this spring. The New York-based duo of Maya Bon and Ryan Albert have announced Water’s Here In You, out April 26 via Double Double Whammy. This week sees the release of a new song called ‘Birdseye,’ following the previously released album track ‘Chariot.’ Seemingly aware of the blandness that runs through most modern indie rock, ‘Birdseye’ opts for something more ambitious and strikes a balance between melancholic and soaring, jangley and ornate. The music video, directed by Ash Kron, makes a comforting blanket out of the threads of whimsy in the song, depicting Bon as a balloon-aided bird flapping across the coast and taking advantage of the nice weather to do some human-watching. Last year, Saya Gray shared her Qwerty EP. Now, the art-pop musician announced its sequel, Qwerty II, and shared the hallucinatory single ‘AA BOUQUET FOR YOUR 180 FACE’ with a video directed by Jennifer Cheng. “180 face is my bass moment off of qwerty ii EP,” she said in a statement. “it’s about a spooky moody boy with a 180 face.” Qwerty II was made in isolation in 2023, and Gray describes it as “a collection of ideas and collages stuck together as the ying to the yang of the first half.” [via Stereogum]

The new visuals for Fever Ray‘s ‘Shiver’ come from frequent collaborator Martin Falck; Main, the trollish office drone Dreijer has portrayed in this era of visuals, falls from the sky to a red planet. They’re healed by a buff doctor, played by none other than International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation pro bodybuilder Irene Andersen, whose office also doubles as a BDSM chamber. Some light physiotherapy ensues. The new clip was inspired by the Lovers of Valdero, a pair of Stone Age skeletons that were buried for millennia in an intimate embrace. “We fantasized about what might have happened to these two skeletons,” Dreijer says. “Were they so in love they had their mouths and noses too close to each other, or couldn’t stop kissing so they died of carbon monoxide poisoning? Or did a dinosaur kill them, and they died in fear holding each other? Was it a volcano, and they were protecting themselves from the lava burning their flesh? Maybe they weren’t in love at all; perhaps they were lifelong enemies facing their final struggle strangling each other? We felt there was a beautiful story there about the struggles of falling in love and the vulnerability you might feel being ‘examined’ by your love interest who wants to make sure you really are the one they can trust and form a relationship with, that will last for eternity.” [via The FADER]

Tierra Whack has dropped ’27 CLUB,’ the latest preview of her new album, WORLD WIDE WHACK. A reference to the infamous 27 Club of celebrities who died at the age of 27 — including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain — the new single was produced by Whack’s frequent collaborator J Melodic and ProdbyBRIANNA. The track dives deep into Whack’s mental health, as she sings about losing touch with family and friends while embodying the pain of coming up against seemingly insurmountable obstacles. After explicitly mentioning thoughts of suicide, Whack sings, “Like a glass full but I’m empty/ Said, ‘I’m broken, can you fix me?’/ If I’m dreamin,’ you should pinch me/ Got a gun to the head, don’t tempt me.” Addressing the song in an Instagram post, Whack wrote, “I was in a dark place for a long time, and no one knew. I found my way out and made a choice to keep living. I wanna be completely transparent with my ‘whackos’ because I’m human just like you and we all have rough days. The key is to keep going! Be kind… you never know what someone else is going through. Toronto-born, Los Angeles-based alternative artist Abby Sage sustains her musical momentum with an introspective new single, ‘Soak.’ This radiant track offers another peek into her creative process while heightening the anticipation for the release of her forthcoming debut album, The Rot, out March 1 via Nettwerk. Embellished with delicate vocals and complemented by upbeat guitar strums, ‘Soak’ strikes a sonic balance between melodic buoyancy and industrial undertones. Though the EP boasts lyrics that can be read as anthemic and relatable, as evidenced by previous singles ‘Easier To Run’ and ‘Happiness is an 8 Ball,’ the songs on the EP are all grounded in Nott’s lived experience. ‘Oh Lana’ is about the first crush Nott ever had on a girl, back in Catholic school. “Would it be so bad to love you?” she sings longingly over spare percussion and a thick bassline. Those lyrics reflect the fear she carried with her into adulthood that being queer was shameful, a dogmatic belief she internalized as a kid.

“‘Oh Lana’ is about my first queer crush. I was probably about eleven and I got into a fight with another kid to defend her honour,” Georgia explains. “I wasn’t sure how to fully express that back then, so this song has, in a way, been my love letter to that little gay version of me.”

The song’s bass-driven, heavy production choices counteract Nott’s crystalline voice, so clear and composed against the surrounding chaos as she sings of a deteriorating relationship. “I don’t think it’s love/ I don’t think it’s fate,” the chorus goes, as the drums crash and a spry electric guitar motif offers a glimmer of hope amidst desperation.
