‘Nothing Is Forever’ takes off like a train in both sound and spirit; an anthemic slice of triumphant alt-folk that will resonate with fans of First Aid Kit and Courtney Marie Andrews with its tumbling drums, potent trumpets, and lush, swelling open chords in a widescreen arrangement featuring dulcimer, mandolin, harmonium, trombone, guitars and bass.

Penned at a high point of the #MeToo movement, the track remains startlingly relevant with its shots at the kind of misogynist that poses as enlightened; “arguably the most damaging type of sexist… the wolf in sheep’s clothing” affirms Mooney, and is ultimately an aspirational call-to-arms that she says promises “Nothing is forever, not even the patriarchy.”

This evocative tone is shared by the track’s cinematic visuals, directed by Nick Mckk (Kate Miller-Heidke, Jen Cloher, Alice Skye) on the land of the Dharug and Gundungurra people in the so-called Blue Mountains. Characterized by sweeping cinematography and long, slow zooms, the video finds Mooney and her dulcimer in an ethereal, serene state against a backdrop of majestic ancient trees, rocks, and waterfalls – a perfect visual complement to the inherent drama of the single. Of the video, Mooney says “With dulcimer in tow, Nick and I scrambled through bush and fell (literally) into creeks, finding captivating and evocative places for me to perch, strum and sing into the trees. We started at noon and by nightfall had explored waterfalls, valleys, and watched the sunset over the treetops. I enjoyed the contrast of singing ‘Nothing Is Forever’ in an environment so ancient. One wonders how many people and birds have sung to those trees. The video became a love letter to that part of the world, which of course I hope is forever.”

North Wales alt-pop quartet HOURGLVSS, made up of best friends Katie Benbow (vocals / keyboard), Sophie May Williams (vocals / keyboard), Rosie Hamilton (guitar) and Lauren James (drums) are the newest infectious girl gang you will want to be a part of. They’ve shared the vibrant new video for their recent infectious single ‘Calling’. The new video was filmed in HOURGLVSS’ renowned rehearsal space, situated within Benbow’s Vintage clothing warehouse. They used a green screen and a borrowed Rolls Royce. “We wanted the main character in the song to have and animated and whimsical feel to keep the video light hearted, so we used our Lipstick Mascot” adds HOURGLVSS. The video sees their lipstick mascot eventually free’d from their dark hole and sadness from persistent calling from friends which is the basis and message of the song. The video is fun and playful, taking inspiration from the likes of Bananarama and concluding with a nod to the film Never Ending Story. Eventually, the lipstick mascot is rescued and joins a magical ride of friendship. ‘Calling’ was written when Katie was going through a bad time. The opening line belts ‘The clothes on the floor they really are piling, she keeps adding more’. Recalling the time she sat looking at the pile of clothes on her floor during a period of depression, she remembers the rest of her bandmates calling her up to check she was okay. “Before HOURGLVSS, I never had a group of solid girlfriends. This is a love letter to all the girls in the band and to all girls and their friends. I had never found a community where I felt I fit in and where you all care about each other, where you can tell something is up with someone and want to check in.” ‘Calling’ is an uplifting slice of alt-pop that takes its cues from the likes of The Cranberries and Cocteau Twins. Eora/Sydney based musician Georgia Mooney is excited to announce her eagerly anticipated debut album Full of Moon, out August 25 via Nettwerk. Georgia treats us to a teaser ahead of her debut album, taking shape as ‘Break It Off’. Pulling inspiration from the theatrical sounds of ABBA and Rufus Wainwright, ‘Break It Off’ is pure high drama, a melodramatic and shamelessly camp take on infatuation ending in pain, fuelled by desperate yearning and stubborn sentimentality. Georgia Mooney shares “it is about being powerless to somebody’s charms. When a relationship is terribly bad for you, but the infatuation is overwhelming. As well as being wonderfully theatrical, it’s also the avenue through which Mooney presents an ode to one of her greatest loves – Benedict Cumberbach. She shares, “It is no secret that I have something of a celebrity crush on Benedict Cumberbatch. I do not suffer from celebrity worship syndrome in general, nor do I ever get star struck, I cannot explain the spell that was cast on me when first I clapped eyes and ears on Cumberbatch. Surely something to do with the rather lovely, clever-sounding accent and the period costume attire…When I wrote the lyric “you’re not a patch on Benedict Cumberbatch”, I gave myself the rest of the day off.”

Claud, the first artist signed to Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records, has announced a new album. Claud’s sophomore release is called Supermodels and it’ll be out July 14. Coming two years after 2021’s Super Monster, Supermodels features 13 tracks, including lead single ‘Every Fucking Time,’ out now. Of the track, Claud says: “I wrote ‘Every Fucking Time’ two summers ago. It was hot and sticky in New York, so naturally I was spending a lot of time at home, overthinking everything… and this song was born. Even as I was writing “Every Fucking Time” I had flashes of what I wanted the music video to look like. The songs details and specificity came straight from me, so it only felt natural to write and direct the music video too. This was my first time directing, which was scary, but came easily because my vision for this song was so strong. The video wouldn’t have been the same without my co-star, Grace Kuhlenschmidt. We met on the internet early in the pandemic. I was a big fan of her comedy, and I watched every single video she posted. We quickly became friends and have been wanting to collaborate for a while, and I wrote this video concept with her in mind. ‘Judy Law’ is the new single and video from Norwegian band Fieh. This band are overwhelmingly guilty of consistently delivering outstanding future soul music. Behind the song title is lead singer Sofie Tollefsbo‘s alter ego, Judy Law, a lawyer living in designer clothes – an entirely different lifestyle from that of a hard-working musician. The single revolves around the desire for a better life or simply to be someone else. Although the theme represents self-realisation, it has a dreamy quality that suggests wishful thinking. hemlocke springs first emerged last year with ‘girlfriend,’ an addictive, high-energy earworm that promptly blew up on TikTok. She followed that up with ‘stranger danger!’ in January and now she has dropped another new song. ‘sever the blight’ begins in melodramatic fashion with springs situating herself in a dank basement tied up by the ankles. It’s not all doom and gloom, however, with the song powered by a sleek synth-laden beat courtesy of BURNS, the EDM-adjacent producer who contributed heavily to Lady Gaga’s Chromatica. The track’s playful tone is matched by a medieval-themed video that imagines a world in which springs drinks wine from a goblet, dances wildly in her turret and stages sword fights for entertainment. Source Music girl group LE SSERAFIM have released their first-ever studio album Unforgiven and a music video for its lead single of the same name. The new title track features legendary record producer Nile Rodgers of disco band Chic. In the new visual for ‘Unforgiven’, the members of LE SSERAFIM don cowboy hats and perform the track from a Western-themed bar and later, a helipad, singing and rapping to the energetic single. Meanwhile, leader Kim Chaewon rides a white horse through a devastated city, jumping over the wreckage. “Unforgiven, I’m a villain, I’m a / Unforgiven, Imma walk that road / Unforgiven, I’m a villain, I’m a / It’ll be remembered as a new era, Unforgiven,” they chant in the chorus. Isle of Wight alt-rockers Coach Party are celebrating the announcement of their debut album Killjoy with the release of their new single, ‘All I Wanna Do Is Hate.’ The single is a roaring and relentless blend of punk and noise pop that oozes with power and inspires listeners to get in touch with their inner fury. The single is a banger through and through, opening with hooky guitar riffs leading the charge into a world full of thrumming bass lines and crashing percussion. Eastwood taps into a merry bitterness with her addictive vocals, declaring, “I’m into hating / Not hesitating / I’m gonna tell you everything / That I think of you.” In the climactic chorus, she challenges her peers to a fight, exclaiming that she always gets what she wants. London multi-hyphenate Lava La Rue has shared her new single ‘Renegade’. A trailblazing talent, Lava is part of the NiNE8 Collective, working alongside close friends such as breakouts Biig Piig and Mac Wetha. Alongside this, Lava’s solo outings are increasingly formidable, building to 2022’s excellent Hi-Fidelity EP. Freshly signed to Dirty Hit, Lava La Rue now sits on a roster which also includes the likes of Rina Sawayama, beabadoobee, and little known indie types The 1975. There’s a lot more incoming, with Lava opening a fresh chapter on their latest single. A signal of psychedelic intent, ‘Renegade’ has an otherworldly appeal, its lawless aspects intermingling with Lava La Rue’s voice. London-based purveyor of alt-pop Fran Lobo has announced that her debut album Burning It Feels Like will arrive on August 18 through Heavenly Recordings. Previous single ‘All I Want’ features on the record, as does today’s new single ‘Tricks’, which will be the closer. Lobo says: “‘Tricks’ is inspired by a 1970s kind of songwriting sensibility. It’s classic in its structure but with weird production and sound design. It’s direct and vulnerable and it explores those ‘tricks’ where you’re playing mind games with yourself, world-building in your head. It’s theatrical and dark, it’s me taking the piss out of myself whilst playing on fairy tales, the idea of the ‘crazed woman’ and unrequited love/ love addiction.” At a remove from the work, Lobo can say that she’s taking the piss out of herself, but in the midst of ‘Tricks’ she is deadly serious about her emotions. Supported by atmospheric piano chords and tense electronics, Lobo sounds like a woman on the verge of a breakdown. It’s beautiful while being slightly unsettling, but Lobo’s voice ensures that the human element remains the beating heart of the undulating confession. She’s simultaneously trapped by and attracted to her tormentor – namely her mind – and this push and pull is the lifeblood of ‘Tricks’, Lobo repeating “keep playing these tricks on me” as both a request and complaint. While Lobo in the song is uncertain of herself, the Lobo who created the song is in full control, wringing a range of emotion out of the direct but dynamic way she presents her struggle. Singer-songwriter Harriette announces that she has signed to AWAL Recordings. The Texas-born but Brooklyn-based artist has also announced the April 27 release of her debut EP, I Heart The Internet and shares the first taste via the single ‘Goodbye Texas’ which embraces a Western dancefloor glow as she ironically examines her lack of place in her home state—a concern that hit close to home after the political contests of the last few years drove friends and families apart. She says, “I wrote ‘Goodbye Texas’ two years ago as I was driving out of Texas after Christmas. I lived there for 18 years and always felt like I stuck out. As I got older it seemed like everything I wanted to achieve was going to happen elsewhere. It came to a point where I really needed to take some space from being home and this song was my key to the door out.” She continues, “The song was surprisingly easy to write, it felt like everything I wanted to say came out so naturally. It was easy to recall what I have always admired about the state – the sunsets, wide open spaces, bluebonnets and yellow roses. Maisie Peters has dropped a new video for her latest single, ‘Body Better’. The first cut from her soon-to-be-announced second album, it was penned alongside Ines Dunn (Griff, Mimi Webb) and producer Matias Téllez (girl in red, AURORA). “’Body Better’ is one of the most honest songs I’ve ever released, and definitely the most personal,” Maisie explains. “I wrote it after a breakup and it deals with the ugly things you think to yourself in the aftermath, when you’re painstakingly going through everything small thing you did and were and wondering what you could have changed. It’s a song about insecurity and vulnerability, about giving a lot of yourself away to someone who decides they don’t want it anymore and knowing where to go from there.” [via Dork]

Ailbhe Reddy is sharing the video for ‘Last To Leave’, the latest single to be taken from her forthcoming second album Endless Affair, which arrives on March 17. ‘Last To Leave’ is a beautiful and dreamy lo-fi journey of love, romance and embarrassment. Ailbhe says: “It’s about having an infatuation with someone who you find frustrating and watching as they make a fool of themselves at a party, while knowing you might be doing the same thing.” Of the video, she continues: “I sent the album onto Mark Logan & Collective Dublin a few months after it was finished in August 2021, Mark immediately connected to Last to Leave and we decided to work on something together. He had so many amazing ideas for it and was so passionate about bringing them all to life! Kicksie, the project of Toronto musician Giuliana Mormile, has been home-recording and self-releasing since 2018, and they’ve been very prolific. Her last album, 2020’s All My Friends, was given a wider re-release by Get Better Records, and now she’s got a new album called Slouch–her fifth LP overall–due April 14 via Counter Intuitive Records. The Santa Cruz rock band Scowl are about to head out on a massive North American tour with Show Me The Body, Jesus Piece, Zulu, and TrippJones. Now, they’ve announced the Psychic Dance Routine EP, their follow-up to their 2021 debut album How Flowers Grow. It was produced by Will Yip, and they’re introducing it with the fearsomely catchy ‘Opening Night.’ “‘Opening Night’ is a song I’m particularly excited about because I really worked on this song’s structure with the boys in the band,” Scowl’s Kat Moss said in a statement. “I felt inspired by early 2000’s indie rock songs written by bands like The Strokes and Vampire Weekend.” Moss continued: “Lyrically this song takes a pretty literal stab at my experience of feeling jolted from stage to van, and back again, every single night. I also had experiences on tour where I was seeing faces in the crowd that belonged to people from my past, and it was pretty shocking.” [via Stereogum]

Ashnikko is back with her first new single since 2021, ‘You Make Me Sick!’. ‘You Make Me Sick!’ is their first outing since covering ‘Carol of the Bells’ for Spotify in November 2021, and is accompanied by a Saam Farahmand-directed video. Ashnikko says of the track, which was written with longtime collaborators Slinger and Oscar Scheller, “I’ve decided to come back with my angriest, most cathartic song to date. While physically thousands of miles apart, the partnership between Greek pop artist KID MOXIE and German pop artist NINA came organically. Upon connecting, it was instantly clear the two were “synth sisters” destined to make music together. The result is a 5-track EP collection titled Lust set for release on March 24 via Italians Do It Better. The title track ‘Lust’ is out now alongside an edgy and seductive neo-noir music visual shot in Athens by director Paige Von Bank. The Lust project first began as a desire by KID MOXIE, the musical moniker of Greek born, LA-based composer and musician Elena Charbila, to recreate the Jennifer Lopez hit ‘Waiting For Tonight.’ After connecting with synthwave doyenne NINA (Nina Boldt) via Zoom, the idea emerged that a sultry female duet is exactly what this track needed. The notion of a duet-driven project was very appealing to both artists who’ve firmly established themselves with successful solo releases, and notable past collaborations. It was clear both pop/synth songstresses shared a similar headspace and bonded over their affection towards dark cinematic scores such as Blade Runner, Twin Peaks, and Drive.

Tove Lo is already following up her 2022 album Dirt Femme with a funky new single called ‘Borderline.’ If you’re thinking that ‘Borderline’ sounds like it could’ve been pulled from Dua Lipa’s latest album, there’s good reason: “Tons of love to @DUALIPA for trusting me with this baby,” Tove Lo wrote of the track on Twitter. “This is the very first song we wrote together and the very start of our friendship so this feels extra special.” But like many of Tove Lo’s best hits, ‘Borderline’ is a love song with an air of darkness: “I like to feel my bones when they crash into my heart/ I like the taste of blood when you’re tearin’ me apart,” she sings against the song’s heavy, thumping bass line. Signs reading ‘FAKE’ push against girli as the mob grows volatile, silently mouthing “fake,” “fraud” and intelligible screams under girli’s anthem. As the visual closes, the crowd dissipates in a cloud of smoke and girli finds herself alone, begging the question of how much of the raucous scene was imagined by the singer herself, creating characters of her intrusive thoughts as if building her reality from smoke. Milly Toomey (AKA girli) has been on a journey of self-discovery, which comes out through ‘Imposter Syndrome’ and previous single ‘I Really F**ked It Up,’ arriving at the conclusion that she will always surprise herself — and it’s okay to not know what comes next. “I was overthinking everything, feeling like a fake, scared that I was an underachiever and that everybody knew it and was laughed behind my back about it,” girli says. “I kind of go through life feeling like everybody else has a guidebook, and I’m just making it up as I go and getting it wrong. This song is about wanting to run away because of that feeling and being so unsure of yourself it scares you.” [via PAPER]

Athens, GA psych-folk group Immaterial Possession, who are led by Cooper Holmes and Madeline Polites and include Kiran Fernandes (son of Olivia Tremor Control’s John Kiran Fernandes), will release their second album, Mercy of the Crane Folk, on May 5 via Fire. They’ve just shared ‘To The Fete,’ which should appeal to fans of Syd Barrett, Broadcast, and the places in between.
