“It’s really just a dumb song, isn’t it?” adds Girl Scout’s Emma Jansson about the track. “A dumb guitar riff, dumb lyrics and a dumb beat, and we love it just the way it is. I have no idea where the inspiration behind the lyrics came from, I have no relationship to switchboard operators and they haven’t been around since before I was born. But wouldn’t it be fun if they were still around and they sounded really hot over the phone?”

Alongside Brink’s announcement, the three-piece has premiered their new single ‘Same Kids’. Serving as the first taste of the record, it’s a soaring track inspired by the question of what adolescence would have been like if you could have shared it with the friends you find later in life.

“I spent a big part of my early childhood outside of Sweden (Japan, the US, Germany),” adds Emma about the song. “When I was twelve, my family finally settled in a small town back home. It wasn’t until a few years later that I met people who truly liked the same things I did. For the first time I really felt understood; like the world opened up once I found people who listened to the same music and were drawn to the same weird niche things. When I met Kevin and learned he spent much of his childhood in Canada before settling in Sweden, we realized we share a lot of oddly specific childhood memories. It reminded me of that moment I first found like-minded people, and made me reflect on what it might have been like to know these people earlier in life. How much that would have meant. That same feeling is the inspiration behind “Same Kids” and a big reason this band exists in the first place: to form your own little circle with its own secret language and ideals around it.”

The EP’s forthcoming release is previewed by Girl Scout’s brand new single ‘Honey,’ a mammoth power-pop tune that the group has been teasing on-stage recently; both on their summer tour with Alvvays and at their recent headline shows across the UK & Europe.

Lyrically, ‘Honey’ tackles the complex feelings of friendships falling apart, as lead singer Emma Jansson notes: “’Honey’ is about the bittersweet experience of close friends growing apart, heartache and the inevitability to keep everyone in your life at the same time. The lyrics delve into the complex emotions of frustration, concern, and helplessness while witnessing the imbalance of that relationship. It was originally written as an acoustic number, but we discovered that it was better suited as our interpretation of a 2010s indie rock song.”

A song that’s primed for the stage, ‘I Just Needed You To Know’ arrives just ahead of the group’s upcoming live dates in the UK & Europe, where they will join Alvvays for a full leg of their highly anticipated summer tour, as well as perform numerous headlining shows and festivals from May through July.

“‘I Just Needed You To Know’ was birthed during a spontaneous jam session in the middle of rehearsing for tour,” says vocalist/guitarist Emma Jansson. “Starting with Viktor toying with the opening riff, almost the entire song was just the band playing in a room with the mics rolling. We wanted the raw energy of the song to remain, so not much has been done to it.”

“The phrase “it is what it is” is one that I hear a lot amongst the older generations,” she adds about the lyrical side of the song. “To me, it feels like a way to avoid acknowledging hard times or difficult feelings. It’s such a stifling phrase. What if that’s not enough? What if I want more than to grit my teeth and move on? I think there is a clear generational divide when it comes to the language surrounding mental health, and the willingness to understand the causes behind it.”

Showcasing lead singer Emma Jansson’s vocal spectrum hitting new heartbreaker heights, it’s a song that offers winsome reflection beyond their years on those feelings of getting older and seeing those closest to you in a whole new light. As guitarist Viktor Spasov explains of the track:

“‘Bruises’ is a song about reaching a certain age where you realise that the grown ups and people around you aren’t really grown ups but just kids stuck in older bodies. It’s a song about trying to understand and forgive the wrongdoings or faults that people close to you may have and, in some ways, the whole track is a reminder for myself to try and choose love and patience instead of anger and irritation”.
