Produced by Joe Hamilton (Periphery, LOSTT), Synthetica’s switch from aggressive riffs to huge, swaying choruses encapsulates Hamartia at their very best. Lyrically, it’s dark, moody, and reminds some specific individuals that they can talk all they like – we all know what sort of person they truly are behind the mask.

On the inspiration for Synthetica, vocalist Sophie Smith said “It came from pure frustration. I’m tired of how the responsibility always falls on women to call out misogyny and sexism, and to somehow be the ones expected to fix systemic issues. It’s about the men who wear feminism like a costume, rehearsing all the right lines while quietly dismantling the outspoken women around them who pose a risk to their fictional peace.

“The danger is in the performance, in never quite knowing if they understand the harm, or if they enjoy it. I’ve always believed that what goes around, comes around. Some lessons just take longer to land.”

‘Bloom’ is an anti-Valentine’s anthem about coming to terms with the fact that not only has your relationship has run its course, but you’ve lost yourself in the process. It’s about realising that it’s better to be alone and totally free to be yourself, than it is to feel restricted, stuck and suffocated in a relationship – and using that freedom to try and reclaim what’s left of yourself.

Vocalist Sophie Smith said “’Bloom’ is another track that feels to us like a three-minute long post-breakup therapy session. We’ve all been in a position where we’ve changed who we are for somebody in the hopes that it ‘fixes’ something – but in reality, it does the opposite.”

Hamartia’s heart-on-sleeve brand of ‘trauma dumping’ has always set them apart from the rest of the scene – connecting quickly with a rapidly-growing, dedicated fanbase. The band has been labelled as one of Noizze’s Top 20 Artists Set to Conquer 2025, thanks to their unwavering desire to be true to themselves at every opportunity in their songwriting and their live shows – which at times could be mistaken for group therapy sessions.

Sophie continues, “This song is our opportunity to lay all of our feelings bare, work through them and hopefully come out the other side with a new found appreciation for being true to ourselves, and putting ourselves first for once. You’re more than your worst boyfriend.”

It’s been a small while since South-West based Hamartia have blessed us with a new release, and the new single ‘Is This It?’ suggests that the time since has been spent doing some serious personal and musical soul-searching.

Vocalist Sophie Smith said “when people ask us to describe this song in particular, the most accurate term we’ve found is ‘post-therapy’. Our music has historically been based on some terrible experiences with terrible people, and ‘Is This It?’ feels like proof that, personally, we’re finally moving in the right direction. There’s still plenty of miserable songs flying around our rehearsals, but we’re able to recognise we deserve the good things too.”
