Welsh art-pop outfit HMS Morris dive headfirst into 80s excess on ‘Launderette’, featuring Bright Light Bright Light. The third single from their forthcoming fourth album, Saci Hacs, out October 30, imagines an era of financial excess where someone is always waiting in the wings to clean up the mess — for the right price.

The decade is all over the music. Glossy synth pads dominate the arrangement, backed by driving bass through the verses and distinctly 80s-sounding drums. Occasional bursts of wonderfully over-the-top, flashy guitar push things even further into the excess, while Heledd’s slightly conversational vocal balances a frenetic edge with a sultry cool. It’s bright, insistent synth-pop with new-wave running right through it.

Bright Light Bright Light’s Rod Thomas makes an excellent Launderette Man, his sinister delivery providing a delicious contrast to Heledd as the pair meet for a theatrical middle-eight duet. It’s here that the song’s playful concept really comes alive, turning financial greed and moral compromise into something knowingly ridiculous and irresistibly catchy. ‘Launderette’ embraces the biggest, glossiest parts of the 80s aesthetic — dirty laundry and all.

HMS MORRIS return with ‘Glue’, the latest preview of forthcoming album Saci Hacs, due for release on October 30 via Bubblewrap Collective. The Welsh outfit continue to occupy a wonderfully singular corner of alternative music, crafting songs that feel theatrical, whimsical and impossible to neatly place within one genre. Like the best of their work, ‘Glue’ invites listeners into a world where memory and imagination blur together, wrapped up in a sound that’s entirely their own.

One of the first things that stands out is the song’s playful use of shifting time signatures, dancing effortlessly between 3/4 and 6/8 and giving the track its gently lilting momentum. Combined with warm, nostalgic organ melodies that instantly conjure images of seaside piers, faded fairgrounds and childhood summers, ‘Glue’ carries an uplifting sense of wonder even as it explores the longing for people and stories that exist just beyond our reach. The theatrical arrangements, rich yet airy, give the song an emotional pull that sneaks up on you, capturing that strange space between treasured memories and spiralling fantasy.

Speaking about the single, the band describe ‘Glue’ as “a lovely statement of longing for the idealized stories and characters we create throughout our lives.” It’s an idea that runs beautifully through the song, where dreams, nostalgia and reality gently intertwine. Quirky, heartfelt and refreshingly unique, ‘Glue’ is another reminder that nobody quite sounds like HMS MORRIS.
