On the eve of shows with legendary troubadour Steve Poltz, Imogen now shares ‘Squinters’, a co-write with Poltz and the latest taste of her new album The Art of Getting Through which follows on May 31.

“This song is my worst nightmare set to music, the life I could have led if I’d never gotten out of my hometown, if I’d never found the strength to fight for myself.” Imogen explains. “There’s a type of person who lives in Western Sydney, nicknamed “squinters” because they work a 9 to 5 job closer into the city, so they’re always driving home towards the west when the sun is setting, squinting to see the highway ahead. We were trading lines back and forth so fluidly, like I’d had this song percolating inside of me and waiting for the right person to bring it to boil with. We finished it in an hour and went to gorge ourselves on tacos”.

“I wanted a song that was intimate and vulnerable but massive, as big sounding as the feelings I was writing about,” says Imogen. “I wrote it with Sam Phay in Melbourne, and I came in with the idea that had been growing in my mind, this hunger to be the big one in somebody’s life, the love that stays in their heart even if the relationship doesn’t last”.

The scope and intensity of the song demanded the best of the best to realize the recording. Traveling to Los Angeles, Imogen and producer Mike Bloom decamped to the iconic EastWest Studios, where The Beach Boys recorded Pet Sounds and Red Hot Chili Peppers cut Californication. With five-time Grammy winner Ross Hogarth (Miley Cyrus, Van Halen) engineering, Imogen drafted in Dawes drummer Griffin Goldsmith and bassist Gus Seyffert (Adele, Sia, The Black Keys) who brought incredible passion and dexterity to the track.

‘All Hard Feelings,’ the second track from her forthcoming album, The Art of Getting Through, (due May 31), features a guitar duet by acclaimed singer-songwriter Harper Simon, and the track’s producer Mike Bloom as well as Davey Faragher (bass) and Pete Thomas (drums), members of Elvis Costello’s Imposters.

“I’d had a bit of a week,” Imogen recalls. “We decided to put that energy into a song. It’s a really fun tune that also lets me burn off some of that bitter energy in a cathartic way”.

“Alex Lahey and I wrote ‘Enemy’ just before the pandemic, and it’s been such a favourite to play live,” says Imogen. “Every time we close our sets with it, the song just gets more cathartic and euphoric, and I was happy to get into the studio for one magical day where we captured that energy on record. The song is about breaking out of a toxic relationship, when you want to run and scream and punch the air and I feel like this single is the perfect anthem for finally getting back on the road and bringing these emotions to people in Australian and beyond”.
