This new song tells the story of a modern-day Carrie Bradshaw, who found herself dating a man with a shag cut stuck in the 70s. It blends elements of folkloric pop with indie twang captured by producer Brandon Meagher. She drew inspiration from songs such as ‘Gypsy’ by Fleetwood Mac, ‘Kiss Me’ by Sixpence None The Richer, and one of her favorite Phoenix artists, Victoria Bigelow.

“After watching Almost Famous for the 15th time, I was inspired by the unglamorous side of groupies who fall in love too easily with what seems to be musicians stuck in the 70s,” shares Izzy Mahoubi. “Oversharing my insecurities and writing very specific, sometimes embarrassing, moments of my life is my favorite part of songwriting. I wrote ’70’s Baby’ with one of my best friends, Jaid Johnson, and it was one of those effortless writes. I jokingly said, ‘I’m hot, but I’m not Penny Lane,’ which quickly set the tone for this somewhat sarcastic, situationship song.”

Speaking on the process of writing ‘Cool Guy’ Izzy explains, “Writing ‘Cool Guy’ was one of the most effortless, cathartic, and fun experiences I’ve ever had songwriting. After a four month whirlwind of being swept into the indie music scene in Phoenix, I stood back and realized what looked so glamorous and exciting was all a facade. “The high life seemed so pretty”- Once the lights are off, and the music’s over, you begin to realize all of the tough guys and cool groupies are simply just people. I don’t think I could have told this story more authentically than how I did because I simply wrote what happened. I think anyone who listens to Cool Guy can relate to the feeling of romanticizing someone or some lifestyle that promises the world even though the red flags are there from the start. Some of the lyrics in this song make fun of the indie/underground concept, more so, I’m making fun of myself for taking that whole idea so seriously. Cool is dead. Do what you want.”

Speaking on the new single Izzy shares, “I wrote this song during winter break of my senior year in high school. It was during a time when the excitement of my last year in school and new relationships were starting to fade. Nothing was “new” anymore. I remember grieving friendships that started to dissolve and accepting that the next season of life was going to look very different. I thought of the first line when I was driving home from a school event, “I wish the shade of us was just as vibrant as when I first met you”. I let that one sit on the shelf for a few months before I let myself surrender to the uncomfortable reality that sometimes relationships fade when it’s no one’s fault. It’s as heart-wrenching as a breakup and as upsetting as a friendship fallout: the slow steady dissipation of two people going on different paths. There’s something beautiful about that as well. Endings are never fun, but without knowing, we are writing chapters of each other’s memoirs just by being present which I think is pretty cool.”

It’s upbeat, yet personable sound has descriptive lyrics and friendly melodies. More than just “dreaming of the summer”, ‘Hang Around’ is a song that dares to reimagine what your life could be like and what you are able to achieve. My hopes are that this song can make whoever is listening feel uplifted and excited about their lives and that the chorus will be stuck in their heads after listening to it one time lol.”
