What started as a simple direction to “create a song that had more space and emotional weight than we usually lean into”, ‘In Morphine’ wound up leading Jet City Sports Club down a special creative path that unlocked new layers of chemistry within the band as a result.

They say, “We had the full song written early on, but the verse never quite sat right. The chorus had impact, but the verse needed more. A few months later, we came back to it with fresh ears and dug deeper into the meaning.

“We talked a lot about distance, and the ache of missing someone you can’t reach. The lyric “hate that you’re lonely” became a turning point. It felt honest and powerful, like it held everything we were trying to say. The whole process was deeply collaborative. It was one of those songs that revealed itself slowly, through trial and reflection, and those rare moments where everything clicks and you find the exact words to match a feeling.”

Recorded with Fletcher Matthews (Trophy Eyes, Dear Seattle, Stumps) at his studio in Glebe, Jet City Sports Club pulled influences from artists they love, including The Cure, Holly Humberstone and The Beaches, while pushing their honest brand of storytelling and delivery further than they had on previous releases.

Of the song, the band describes ‘Mini Skirt’ as being about “growing up” and realising there isn’t necessarily one right way to do things or move through life: “…you don’t have to be perfect or conform to the ways your friends, family or the world might want you to. The story is narrated from the perspective of a young girl going through serious body image issues and pressure to be someone they might not necessarily be. The verses talk about this and the chorus aims to reclaim a sense of independence and self worth.”

Recorded in Sydney with producer Fletcher Matthews (The Buoys, Trophy Eyes, Dear Seattle), Jet City Sports Club have woven the warmth and rich depth of their past releases in with fresh perspective looking forward.

The track is accompanied by a truly stunning video, directed by Josh Fogarty and edited by Liam Jordan. The video emits an overwhelming sense of joy and nostalgia – filmed in and around the south-coast of NSW. As the band stops off at glorious beaches, second hand stores and petrol stations, it’s hard not to get wrapped up in everything the band are throwing at you.

Quickly winning hearts of new fans in 2022 with releases such as ‘Green Thumb’ and ‘Feeling It All’, the four-piece have returned for 2023 to level things up and broaden their scope, with the release of the shimmering latest track, ‘Drug Store (Waste My Time)’. They have also recently wrapped up a month long tour of Australia supporting STUMPS.

The band have very kindly put together their top 5 tips for indie artists starting out in the music industry. Read it below.

1. Go to heaps of shows and play heaps of shows!
People in the industry say to be selective with shows you take, which we completely agree with. However, when you’re finding your feet and trying to make connections just play heaps and go to heaps of shows! We averaged a show a week for our first year or two haha

2. Get outsider opinions
The best thing we could do early on was work with producers and people who had been in the scene for a while. It’s always good to have someone comb through your work and add pointers.

3. Pay attention to the musical landscape
Keep an ear on Triple J Unearthed, playlists and local radio stations and see what people are vibing and what artists are making. It gives a sense of what’s current and what people are interested in. It also gives you a platform to expand and differentiate your own songs from that.

4. Keep at it
Sometimes you’ll release a song that doesn’t hit the way you want, or play a show that doesn’t go so well. That’s alright. Go again and again and eventually it’ll start snowballing into something awesome.

5. Merch
If you’re serious about it, start making merch early as it’s a great way of getting your name out there and funding projects within the band. If you can’t afford t-shirts for a little while, start with stickers etc. and build up from there.

For this track, the band recorded in Sydney with Fletcher Matthews on production and engineering, as well as William Bowden on mastering. Development of the track grew out of Matthews’ Glebe studio, a process songwriter Lilla Obradovic says was a nice, organic one.

“[We] worked at breaking down the initial seed/idea of the song and re-shaping it to be more storytelling and melodically catchy. After finishing the writing of the song core (guitar and vocals), we set to work deciding what type of beats and bass lines and frills we wanted throughout the song. We honestly were just having a great time figuring out how the song should sound in between lunch breaks of Chinese dumplings and cups of coffee,” says singer Lilia Obradovic.

‘Drug Store (Waste My Time)’, at its core, is a love song. Told from the perspective of someone who yearns for another from afar, the song feels like it takes place in a dream. There’s a playful nostalgia and naivety to the song that makes it easy to sink into, jam packed with charisma largely thanks to Obradovic’s vocals.

Lilia continues: “When I started writing this song, It was about always wanting more from a significant other, but it evolved into a sort of longing and desperation to be seen by someone you don’t even really know. Someone who might not even know you exist yet.

“You know that feeling when you have a big crush on someone from a distance and you hope that they can feel your eyes on them across the room, but it’s all just juvenile because you don’t even know if you’d like them if you really got too close? I suppose the song is about that feeling. A dream of something that isn’t and might never be.”

The band say: “’Feeling It All’ is a song about the emotional rollercoaster of missing somebody that you love. Sometimes when you’re missing somebody is when you love them the most and that’s what makes being apart so difficult. Not to mention all the other emotional turmoil of life in general, it can be beautiful, poetic but also a little bit sad especially when you’re feeling everything so deeply and personally. ‘Feeling it all’ is a little bit of a different direction for us musically, leaning more towards pop, and we are nervous yet very excited about the change.”

The song is somewhat more pop than we’ve heard from Jet City Sports Club in the past. Earlier this year they released ‘Green Thumb’ which took its musical cues from Phoebe Bridgers and Beach Bunny.

“Jack and I started writing ‘Feeling it all’ last year in lock-down and we originally thought we should sell it off to some pop-star haha. Then when we started recording with Fletcher we fleshed it out, bumping ideas off one another and the rest sort of just fell into place,” explains Lilla.

“I started writing ‘Green Thumb’ one afternoon when I looked around my apartment and realized I only had one houseplant that was still alive,” explains Lilla. “So I suppose I started thinking ‘I hope I don’t neglect relationships like I do my plants!’ Jack is really good at bringing light summery and anthemic themes and fun catchy riffs into our music and so from there we just built on that before taking it first to the rehearsal studio with the band and then to Fletcher the Producer we worked on for this one.”

‘Green Thumb’ is comparable to long-time pioneers in that lush indie sound such as The Sundays, but with an unique Australian edge similar to ​​their contemporaries The Buoys and Teenage Joans. Slicing through the sun kissed vibes of Lilla vocals is Seb’s bass and Dom’s drum parts with Jack’s perfectly executed layer of guitar throughout the song that ties it all together.

“Usually Jack and I will come up with the initial lyrics and chords of a song separately or sometimes together, and then we will take the new song to band practice where we will flesh out new riffs, the structure and of course Seb and Dom will come up with their bass and drum parts. We have just recently started working with Fletcher Mathews who collaborated with us on ‘Green Thumb’ rewriting some structure, lyrics and parts.”
