On ‘A Country Dance’, Joanna explains: “The joke of the song is: I don’t dance, I don’t drink wine, I don’t go outside and I DEFINITELY do not go out in nature (allergies and insect phobias), but I wanted a playful nonsensical song to sing and to capture the fun I have with my dear pal.”

Joanna further elaborates on the track’s inclusion in the film: “I think the reason the song can fit in this beautiful film, is that it captures a freewheeling imaginative feeling. The lyrics are vague enough to be applied to anything, and it just creates a ‘fun and fancy-free’ mood!”

The songs on I’ve Got Me carry an emotional wallop, with ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ examining the horror of an NYC chemical romance. “I was surprised that my friends encouraged me about this song because originally I was too embarrassed to even consider showing it to anyone,” Sternberg says. “It is about looking back on a romantic relationship and realising all of these things that you thought were normal at the time were actually very damaging to you, including the relationship itself.”

‘People Are Toys To You’ is a rousing number steered by Sternberg’s ever-incisive lyrics – “People are toys to you // You’ll play and play with one till you’re bored and through. // You may want it back when it’s gone and flew ‘cause, // People are toys to you” – and is underscored by their steely instrumentation. In addition to illustrating each single’s accompanying video, Sternberg masterfully wrote and played every instrument heard on I’ve Got Me. The album is their recorded debut as a string arranger and drummer, and ‘People Are Toys To You’ marks Sternberg’s first song credited as electric guitarist.

Of ‘People Are Toys To You,’ Sternberg adds: “I wrote this song while I was in a rush walking to the subway with my double bass. I was upset about something and the song sort of wrote itself. The funny thing is that Soundcloud Pro’s ‘who is listening’ feature told me the person I wrote this song about listened to it four times when I posted it on Facebook. Oops!”

Recorded with producer Matt Sweeney and engineer Daniel Schlett at Brooklyn’s Strange Weather Studios, I’ve Got Me was recorded and mixed over six days of intensely productive sessions during the summer of 2022. “I pretty much stayed out of Joanna’s way,” Sweeney says, “let them know they sounded great and allowed the music to happen.”

Sternberg pulls heavy weight on the album opener, ‘I’ve Got Me.’ Atop their own instrumentation (they masterfully wrote and played every instrument on the record’s 12 songs), Sternberg dissects their own shortcomings with sobering accountability: “And all my faults and flaws and lies // are no one’s fault but mine. // Between self-hatred and self-awareness // is a very small thin line.” Of ‘I’ve Got Me,’ Sternberg says: “I do not remember if I wrote this song before or after reading the poem ‘Oh Yes’ by Charles Bukowski, but the song is definitely meant to reflect the same sentiment. I also have the poem tattooed on my right arm!”
