Sulky and scintillating, ‘Clean’ sees the two-piece traversing the darker side of dream-pop as moody melodies linger in the air like clouds blocking out the sun on a dismal day.

Fusing gentle strumming guitars with balmy vocals and overcast stretches of instrumentals, Laveda are further perfecting their knack for shoegaze-flecked introspections that feel both achingly intimate and widely relatable.

A wistful reflection on the home truths and growing pains that come with getting older, vocalist Ali Genevich confides of the new track: “I think for the first time I truly realised that growing up was an inevitable fate. It’s such a strange thing, knowing you’re only to grow further and further from innocence as life goes on. I never wanted to think about getting older as a kid, I wanted to stay eight years old forever. I think there’s a part of that feeling that will always stay with me.”

Blending chiffon shoegaze rhythms with propulsive ‘90s-tinged guitars and distant drums, the new cut builds gently to its shimmering conclusion like a college coming-of-age story that sees a disillusioned protagonist defeat their adversaries to come out on top. 

Vocalist Ali Genevich explains: “By my second year of college, I knew I wanted to write, record and perform music all the time. I had a heavy load of requirements for my music degree, so it felt like school was just this big delay to actually starting the career I envisioned. By my fourth year I was completely checked out.

“College felt like high school part two to me. I thought most people would have grown out of the desire to be in cliques and look up to whoever was popular by age 19, but I realised that some people never do. I watched a few friends go through some toxic relationships. It was a perfect breeding ground for sh**ty dudes to prey on naive girls. I wished I could make all the bad people disappear so they couldn’t drag down the ones I cared about with them.”

Reminiscent of Soccer Mommy, NewDad, Snail Mail or beabadoobee, ‘F***’ follows Laveda’s earlier sun drenched single ‘Surprise’, both of which will feature on the band’s much anticipated second LP A Place We Grew Up In – due April 2023.

Bringing to mind the likes of Alvvays, Soccer Mommy, Big Thief or My Bloody Valentine, the track is a hazy slice of feel-good dream-pop with a bitter sting in its tail. ‘Surprise’ is gauzy and glittering with sun-drenched rhythms — but its lyrics take a darker turn.

Jake Brooks explains: “The lyrics are meant to juxtapose the happy sunshine feeling throughout the song. ‘Surprise’ is about dealing with loneliness and loss in this modern age. The overall sound represents how bright and happy we present ourselves on social media. But in reality, everyone’s depressed and stressed over the rapidly devolving state of society.”

With murky, despondent lyricism at odds with its upbeat aura, the track taps into the listlessness and loneliness that comes along with young adulthood. Vocalist Ali Genevich adds: “”Sonically, ‘Surprise’ is the bright song on the new record. Lyrically it embodies a lot of my personal feelings that came after I graduated from college in the same year the pandemic hit. I couldn’t help but feel low for a while, and once I came out of my writer’s block everything I wrote had this big sad mood.”
