Indie singer-songwriter Lily Hain has returned with her latest single, ‘OH GOD,’ today. The track is an edgy, pop-tinged offering that combats the mundanity of everyday life, particularly inspired by cold winters and seasonal depression (“The shine on my shoes wore off,/ February made me lonely as hell”). A punchy bass and oscillating drum beats make way for an energetic chorus, as she laments being a victim of circumstance even in the city (“I think that I need a new brain”), eagerly awaiting spring, and some form of rebirth, in the bridge. It is Hain’s fifth release in a string of lyrically candid tracks off of her highly anticipated debut album Fatal Flaws, set for release February 9.

‘OH GOD’ was initially written over only a bass line, a common occurrence in Hain’s process. She has a knack for hearing an arrangement from a simple melody, and bringing it to fruition in the studio with her producers. “I knew right away that I wanted to have a lot of driving heavy guitars in the song,” she shared. Drum pads, strings, and synths help to create her intended sound, a rockier side to the commercial pop world.

She explains, “I wrote it during my first winter in New York City after moving from North Carolina, which has much milder winters. It’s about my frustration of the constant of bitter cold, grey days and what it does to my mindset. It also chronicles the novelty of moving to New York City wearing off – I had dreamt of moving to NYC since I was a little girl so this song touches on the realities of living in the big city versus the shiny version I had in my head.”

Indie singer/songwriter Lily Hain is back again with her newest single, ‘Internalize’. The track, a grittier take on her hallmark confessional lyricism and earworm melodies, immediately pulls the listener in with its moody lyrics and grunge-y bass line. “I’m not a doormat,/ You know what?/ I’m the whole fucking house,” she speaks over the bridge’s breakdown. Guitar-driven choruses allow her vocals to soar as she takes back her own narrative, rejecting everything and everyone that makes her “feel drained.”

‘Internalize’ was written uniquely from her previous singles, bred from a place of frustration and anger. After initially mapping the track out on guitar, Hain brought the demo to her producer where drums and production layers were added. The departure from her old work is evident sonically as she takes a step towards an anthemic sound that is both relatable and wildly catchy.

“It’s about the frustration of constantly doing the inner work on myself to grow and heal only to still allow others to walk over my boundaries and make me feel small,” Hain shares. “It’s about the pitfalls of being a people pleaser, the journey of self healing, and trying to break the unhealthy cycles that we sometimes find ourselves in. It was really cathartic to make and I think it’ll be a song that I come back to when I need a reminder to stand up for myself.”

Indie singer/songwriter Lily Hain has returned with her latest offering, ‘Wrapped Up,’ out today. The track, a musical navigation of stress, layers Hain’s smooth vocals with chill synths, drum kits, and electric guitar solos. Verses discuss the “inner turmoil” that life breeds. While the hook – “stuck in my damn mind” – swirls around a bright and playful melody, the lyrics reveal a deeper meaning. Comparisons to Maggie Rogers, Phoebe Bridgers, Soccer Mommy, and Holly Humberstone can easily be made.

‘Wrapped Up’ is the perfect example of Hain’s innovation as an artist, creating a simple bass line over guitar. Once she was in the studio, she recorded the bass line, collaborating with her producer to add in the rest of the track. “I wrote it last summer when I had a lot on my plate and was struggling with a constant low mood,” she shares. “Despite my best efforts to keep moving forward and look on the bright side, I still couldn’t get rid of the constant pit in my stomach.”

The track’s relatability pairs well with its anthemic, ear-worm refrain. An accompanying music video features vibrant animations of a female protagonist sprawled on her bed, chipping newly-painted nails, and walking around New York City. Neon colors contradict the scenes, a nod to the duality of ‘Wrapped Up’ – a balance of hopelessness and hope.
