‘Never Mind’ has a foundation of thick, layered guitars, with Marcie’s infectious vocal melodies gliding over the top. The video accompanying the track is a cinematic dreamscape of seaside shots overlaid with the band, gradually warping and fragmenting as the song and its distortions build.

Speaking on the new single, Marcie offers: “I wanted to tell a story about someone trying to comfort a friend. They’re trying to show support and express their understanding. But over the course of the song, the comforter realises they don’t believe the words they’re saying and fall into the same hopelessness and indifference they were aiming to help their friend overcome. ‘Never Mind’ is usually the last song of our live-set. It’s a lot of fun to play and we become all consumed by it for the last few minutes of our show.”

In contrast to their upbeat first single, the second offering ‘Weak Ankles’ is a Shoegaze-inspired love song that unveils a softer side of the band. Marcie Nyffeler’s vocals start off fragile and grow stronger as the song progresses, as if she is finding confidence in the words.

‘Weak Ankles’ is about being overwhelmed by your own feelings: “It’s not easy to open up and let yourself be vulnerable, but that is when beautiful things happen,” explains the band. “It’s tempting to look for excuses and to focus on the things that could go wrong. But sometimes it’s important to let yourself fall.”

‘Damaged Goods’ is considered the turning point of Moonpools’ musical journey. Despite its relaxed mood, the song is to be understood as an ode to the universal lostness and confusion of human existence. This also shows a great strength of singer Marcie Nyffeler, who balances between cheerfulness and melancholy with her voice and lyrics seemingly effortlessly, bringing a smile to one’s lips while still wiping a tear from one’s eye.

Marcie explains: “The song came into being at a time in my life where I felt like I was just wandering around without any goals or ambition. That feeling hasn’t necessarily gone away, but I try not to judge myself for it anymore. Everyone’s a little lost in some way or another, and that’s ok.”
