‘Alone With You’ feels at times like you’re reading from Morgan’s diary as she explores her emotions through confessional narratives. Two-time Ivor Novello Award winner Iain Archer on production/co-writing and Morgan’s good friend Sam playing the pots and pans.

Talking about the track, Morgan explains “‘Alone With You’ is about longing for someone who is probably a massive walking red flag and all of your friends say “pls just delete their number and walk away” but it’s very difficult… And they are likely very charming and sparkly so you forget how shit they can make you feel and you think “ohh this time will be different” and then you call them and then they break your heart and then your friends are all probs like “told you so you fool but we love you and you’re only human so it’s okay. BUT THAT’S IT NOW” and you’re like “yes that’s it now…..”

Rochdale-raised, London-based Morgan describes ‘Main Character’ as, “an anxiety-spiral-slideshow featuring all of my biggest regrets, safely decanted into a 3 minute 30 second song”, with the typical wry humour which also peppers her live shows, often undercutting the emotional intensity of much of her songwriting. The new track builds from its stripped-back, barely-there beginnings into a heavy, self-excoriating outro, more screamed than sung – “It was very cathartic and necessary to scream, to get all the gross feelings out” Morgan deadpans.

Recorded in Brighton, ‘Swimming Upstream’ came out of ongoing sessions with producer Iain Archer (James Bay, Snow Patrol, Lisa Hannigan) and serves as a taste of what’s to come from Morgan in 2023.

Morgan says of the new single: “‘Swimming Upstream’ is mostly fictional. It came from an injury I had last year which took about 10 months to fully heal. I was so pissed off that I was missing going out dancing or hiking or on holidays with friends. And I met someone who had a terrible injury when they were younger, but it led them down a particular path in their life and they said how if it hadn’t happened they’d be totally different. I become a bit obsessed with reading about people who had suffered but were ultimately grateful for their suffering because of where it led them when they let go of fighting it.

“I’m not saying that bad things happen for a reason, I don’t think that’s very empathetic or even true. For me the frustration of what I was missing was hurting me more than the injury itself and opening up the idea that this could give me opportunities that I wouldn’t have otherwise made things calmer and smoother for me. It’s probably the first time I started to actively look for and appreciate what is, rather than obsessing over and struggling against what isn’t.”
