Brooklyn-based queer artist Nathalie Miller explores the early stages of a new relationship on ‘teeth filed down’, the first glimpse of debut album i’d like to think you saved me, due November 13. Built around the unusual image of teeth being gradually worn down over time, Miller considers the privilege of discovering who somebody was before you met them, holding their past experiences alongside the person standing in front of you now.

Strummed acoustic guitar introduces the track alongside Miller’s wistful, slightly dreamy vocal, with accordion quietly colouring the background. From there, ‘teeth filed down’ gradually expands: bright electric guitar provides flashes of sonic glitter, while piano and light percussion slowly enter around its driving rhythm. The chorus opens up further through layered vocals, lending Miller’s indie-pop a subtle celestial glow without losing its intimacy.

That gradual build beautifully complements the song’s blossoming affection, as though those feelings are intensifying almost unnoticed. The accompanying video mirrors that progression, beginning with softly framed, near-still bedroom scenes and close-ups before introducing more movement as Miller begins to dance a little. Its dreamy pinks, reds and blues give the whole thing the feel of a romantic coming-of-age film. Warm, nostalgic and quietly lovestruck, ‘teeth filed down’ captures the way affection can creep up on you piece by piece.

Nathalie Miller returns with new single, a sparkling daydream of glittery indie alt-pop called ‘kansas,’ out today. The glistening track, described as a “platonic friendship breakup song” by Miller, hits streaming services alongside a colorful and melancholic music video directed by Palmer Wells and Christopher Consoli.

The Brooklyn resident and Massachusetts native penned the emotive, star-gazing ‘kansas,’ the first taste of October’s new EP like you used to, as a composite sketch reflecting many of the friendships she’s had with the opposite sex. As it turns out, there was a discrepancy developing in these friendships with men that was not simply present with other women.

“I noticed that in most of my friendships with women, I just felt like a person,” Miller says. “But in a lot of my past friendships with men, I was really hyper aware of being a girl and playing the role of emotional support mother or girlfriend without receiving that support back. I remember thinking to myself, ‘I know the first and last name of every person who’s ever been mean to these guys, and they don’t even know what book I am currently reading, or the names of my brothers’.”

She pauses, then adds: “To me, it’s a platonic friendship breakup song that I wrote after taking a step back from a lot of those friendships and looking at the patterns that threaded them all together.”
