Ahead of the album’s release and following recent single ‘Stubborn Heads’, Neev shares a beautiful lyric video for album track ‘I Put It In A Frame’ – a glistening rumination on the connection between female pain and art.

“‘I Put It In A Frame’ questions what it means to put vulnerability on display, especially as a female artist. It explores the cost of that exposure and the frustration of being confined by expectations. The raw energy in the production reflects this struggle,” says Neev.

Neev says on writing the song: “’Forever Time’ is about the feeling of settling into comfort and letting time stand still. I wrote Forever Time towards the end of writing and recording Katherine, it still feels very much in that world to me, I felt really content in the creative process and proud of what I’d made. I feel like writing ‘Forever Time’ was me kind of closing that chapter of creativity for me and just sitting in what I’d made and where I was. A lot led up to writing and making Katherine and I felt like a dog with a bone for years and years. ‘Forever Time’ marks all that coming to an end, being happy in the stillness and letting go of trying to micromanage or control what would come next.”

Today, Neev has shared her new single ‘Fast Patterns’. Written from the point of view of an imperfect friend, the song is about not knowing how to be there for someone in their darkest moments. It asks how far you should go for a friend in need and at what point you need to take a step back.

Katherine carries all of the trademark sounds of Neev’s previous releases. Acoustic guitars, soaring string arrangements and layered backing vocals can be found throughout, but this time they’re bigger, at times, calling to mind artists like Marika Hackman and Fenne Lily. Every song on Katherine is tied to the idea of identity.

The album’s title encapsulates the record’s essence. “Katherine is a common name in my family and it’s also my middle name,” says Neev. “So whilst it has a personal meaning, it also exists in a few different ways. I named the album Katherine because it touches on the themes of family, identity and the different identities one person can hold within themselves.”

Entirely self-produced and mixed by Neev – and released via Trapped Animal Records – ‘Seawall’ weaves tender guitar tones through a myriad of soft but structured instrumentation. With its cushioned acoustics echoing a ethereal nature, the track’s calming soundscape is constructed with striking vocal harmonies, floating highs and a refreshing airiness. Heavily inspired by an Andrew Scott-led play, ‘Seawall’ is an introspective cut penned by an artist whose eye for detail is first-class.

“I wrote ‘Seawall’ a few years back, as lockdown hit. I’d watched the play Seawall during lockdown which written for and performed by Andrew Scott, I’d seen it in the theatre too, and it’s a play that shares a monologue where the central character offhandedly refers to a hole in the middle of their stomach,” explains Neev. “This kind of fed into my song writing, focusing on the themes surrounding fatigue and stretching yourself too thin which became represented by a hole in the stomach. Hence the lyrics: ‘I know that there’s a hole, take no notice’. And: ‘What a way to exist, you’ve been polite ignoring this hole’.”
