The song opens with a stripped back guitar strumming and builds into a powerful crescendo. Speaking about the new single Nilüfer shares, “We started writing this song for the album, but it was tricky to get it off the ground at that time. Then when we came back from the tour, it suddenly clicked. Melodically it’s one of my favourite things ever. Very glad I was able to give it the time and breathing space that it needed.”

‘Dancing Shoes’ was written alongside a collection of tracks that Nilüfer re-approached with her creative partner Wilma Archer when she returned from touring her latest record. The new single follows previous track ‘Cold Heart’ that will be included on the EP.

Nilüfer shares, “This one turned out pretty different to how I imagined it. The initial melody felt very spacious, like there’s room for anything to happen. It felt like a kind of experiment.”

‘Mutations’ sees Nilüfer recounting experiences that have subtly transformed and shaped her. The single comes alongside a new video directed by Nilüfer’s sister, Molly Daniel, and shot along the streets and beaches of Spain.

Speaking on the track Nilüfer shares: “‘Mutations’ deals with change brought about by circumstance. This is not the phoenix rising from the ashes but the subtle change that happens constantly as millions of tiny decisions and actions shape your being. It’s kind of like survival, for me. Less of a transformation and more something that’s born out of your environment and surroundings, that you need to do to survive. Mutation is just something you have to go through- you have to evolve.”

On the track Nilüfer delves inwards, asking listeners to join her in confronting deep-seated truths and trusting their intuition. Speaking on the track’s inspiration and vulnerable tone she shares, “It takes a certain kind of bravery to fully trust your instincts. It’s about allowing your calling to lead you, to let it guide you somewhere. Let that consume you and destroy you.”

Speaking about ‘Method Actor’ Nilüfer describes how the concept for the song came together, “I was researching method acting – and from what I read, it’s based on finding this one memory in your life, a life-altering, life-changing memory. The reason why some people find method acting traumatic and maybe not safe mentally, is because you’re always going back to that moment. It can be good or bad but you’re always feeding off the energy, something that’s defined you – and that’s what helps you become the character. It’s a bit like being a musician. When you’re performing, you’re still trying to invoke the energy and emotion of when you first wrote it, in that moment. It definitely feels like you’re having to recreate or step into that headspace.”

As a whole, Nilüfer Yanya’s third album asks questions with no easy answers. It is a supple, expansive body of work that peers into the crevices of life, exploring them with comforting strings, skittering beats, soul-tinged melodies and swooning harmonies. It asks, who are we? Why do we follow the paths we follow? What is at the heart of it all?

‘Like I Say (I runaway)’ comes alongside a music video directed by Yanya’s sister Molly Daniel that features Nilüfer as a runaway bride. The song highlights chunky, distorted guitar crunches under a chorus loosely reminiscent of 90’s alternative radio. The single focuses on the moment when you realise how precious time is. Speaking more about the single’s thesis Nilüfer shares, “It’s about how you choose to spend your time. Time is like a currency, every moment. You’re never going to get it back. It’s quite an overwhelming thing to realise.”

The new single was written in collaboration with Yanya’s creative partner, Wilma Archer (Sudan Archives, MF DOOM, Celeste), with whom she’s previously collaborated on PAINLESS and her debut album Miss Universe. Throughout their creative process, a clear emphasis was placed on forming a safe musical space where creative impulses were encouraged and all perceived musical boundaries were eroded. This same process is reflected in the song’s lyrics, which emphasise unrestricted artistry and standing firm in one’s truest self as Yanya attempts to make sense of the world around her.
