New single ‘Dreamspeak’ is a powerful statement of taking back one’s power and voice while in a twilight state. The irresistibly catchy piano-lead, synth-soaked indie pop track is released today alongside an official video.

Nisa shares, “I once heard from someone that not being able to communicate in your dreams is a reflection of your waking life’s sense of not being heard. I thought about writing ‘Dreamspeak’ as an undoing of this feeling, where my dream-self could confront me and give me my voice back.”

Nisa is thrilled to reveal lead album single ‘Smokescreen’ alongside an official video. Armed with indie-punk hooks and dazzling, unexpected pop flourishes, ‘Smokescreen’ is a perfect introduction to Shapeshifting which is, at its core, an album about movement, transformation, and the way self-growth can feel simultaneously exhilarating, disorienting and uncertain.

Nisa shares, “I wrote ‘Smokescreen’ about the dance between seeking closure while being unable to fully let go. I was stuck in a loop of repetitive behavior and somehow also expecting to feel different, and after a while, it started to weigh on me. In order to make a change, I had to admit that I was prone to harmful patterns, and this song is about that self-realization.”

‘Affection’ comes as a jittery piece of alt-pop, tying gleaming synth with deadpan vocals singing over a distorted, propulsive tom groove before exploding into a swell of guitar and electronics towards the end. Speaking about the track, Nisa says: “‘Affection’ focuses on the importance of tenderness. Nate [Amos] and I wanted the production to feel understated yet shimmery in order to communicate the power of nonverbal cues and little acts of care.”

The new EP chalks up Nisa’s third EP release in just over a year following last year’s Guilt Trip and Time To Plant Tears. Lumaj’s new project, Exaggerate was conceived in a liminal period, while she was bouncing between Los Angeles, London, and New York. As a result, there’s a journalistic intensity that seeps through it, even at its most accessible.

The EP-titled track and first single is a slice of scrappy dance-pop, which simultaneously calls to mind Sales, The xx, and Jenny Hval. “If I could delete the pain / It might take me / To your heart, beat faster,” her AutoTuned voice sings on the song’s soaring earworm of a hook. Speaking about the new single, Nisa says: “It takes a while for me to internalize things, and usually that means I have to make sense of my thoughts on my own before I can open up to others. ‘Exaggerate’ is about recognizing the intensity of a really special, fast-moving thing, and desperately wanting to speed that process up in myself.”
