lolitslea doesn’t do subtle. Colourful, loud, electric and unapologetically neon, the pop-punk artist has built a world of blue and green, low-poly video game nostalgia and ridiculously catchy hooks – one that feels like it could have been pulled straight from a computer screen circa 2010.

Her sophomore album, RollerCoaster Tycoon, embraces all the chaos that comes with growing up, from burnout and dating to nostalgia, individuality and figuring out what you actually want. Inspired by the game Lea loved as a kid, the record turns life’s inevitable highs and lows – or, in her words, “the coasters burning down and the children throwing up” – into something playful, messy and entirely her own.

Behind all that fluorescent chaos, however, is an artist who has found purpose, confidence and a voice through making music. We caught up with Lea to talk about rediscovering the things that made her feel like herself, protecting her love of creating through burnout, embracing what she really wants, finding the confidence to be heard and creating a live space where everyone else can be themselves too. Read the Q&A below.

For anyone discovering lolitslea for the first time through this interview, how would you describe yourself as an artist and the fluorescent world you’ve created around your music?

“I would describe my art and music as colorful, extroverted, electric, loud, earwormy. Emphasis on the neon in neon pop punk. The world I built around my music has shades of blue and green and takes place in a video game from around 2010. Low-poly, colorful, and a catchy soundtrack.”

Your new album RollerCoaster Tycoon takes its name from an iconic 2000s game, but you’ve also described it as a “way of life”. What does that title say about where you are in your life right now?

“I can’t say it references where I’m at in life, but more so something that describes the general ebb and flow of my life as it is. Growing up playing RollerCoaster Tycoon on my computer as a kid and finding ways to relate it metaphorically to my adult life is ironic and fun. While you can claim “life is a rollercoaster”, I was comparing the coasters burning down and the children throwing up as the relatable part, lol.”

‘BURNOUT!! BURNOUT!!’ tackles the reality of balancing everyday work with trying to build a career in music. How do you protect your love for creating when the pressure to constantly work and keep up can become overwhelming?

“Life is generally overwhelming. I could very much make it easier by quitting the music thing, but considering it’s one of the few things that brings my life purpose, I fear that would only hurt me more than help. Getting to experience pure joy and bliss while on the stage or writing music or meeting fans and making new friends absolutely makes up for the moments that feel too hard. It’s important to remind yourself that balance is healthy. Asking for help is healthy. And it takes sacrifices to follow your dreams.”

‘Summer 09’ looks back at that wonderfully specific period between childhood and growing up. What is it about nostalgia – particularly the music, culture and memories of the 2000s – that you find yourself drawn back to creatively?

“I think part of it was discovering my own individuality and interests. For a long part of my teenage and young adult years, I spent that time following and liking music and styles because other people did. Following trends instead of diving deep into what I really loved. When I was in middle school, I was discovering a style of music and a community I loved and growing up made me lose sight of that a bit. I wanted to be reminded of that individuality and explore it further, so I picked up where I left off in the 2010s and dove right back into what excites me.”

On ‘Tragedy’, you’re looking for genuine connection in a dating culture that can often feel disposable. Do you think writing about what you actually want, rather than what’s considered normal or expected, has become easier as you’ve grown more confident in yourself?

“I think growing up and uhh, let’s say trial and error have helped me get back to the real purpose of what I’m looking for. I tried it, didn’t like it, and am now trying something new! Who knows, maybe I’ll feel differently in a year from now. I do think confidence comes with age. The older I get, the more idgaf.”

Your music embraces the sounds and aesthetics of the pop-punk era while very much creating its own world. How do you draw inspiration from something you grew up loving without simply recreating the past?

“Honestly, this is probably not the “right” answer, but I truly just copy what I love. I think taking inspiration from everything I loved listening to growing up and what I listen to now, along with my own individuality and experience, it comes off as fresh (hopefully). Like a little brewed up concoction, if I may.”

You’ve toured with Diva Bleach and performed everywhere from Emo Nite to shows alongside Taylor Acorn and Games We Play. What does the lolitslea world become when you take it onto the stage, and what do you want people to feel when they’re part of one of your shows?

“Growing up, I was always dismissed when trying to speak up. In class, in circles, in my friend groups. I blamed it on the pitch of my voice being lower. Getting to take this project and my music to the stage gave me a new chance to speak up and be heard. And all I wanted was to create a fun and exciting space to be whatever we all want to be in that moment together during a show. Creating my own music and getting to bring it to a stage gives me an opportunity to share that newfound confidence with everyone and be myself, which is all I can hope is felt around the room, too!”

Finally, RollerCoaster Tycoon seems to embrace all the chaos, highs, lows and contradictions of life. What do you hope people take away from the album once they’ve ridden the whole rollercoaster with you?

“Aww, ridden the whole rollercoaster is such a sweet way of saying that. I lowkey hope people get a little bit of whiplash. Like “omg that was a lot all at once” because I feel like that’s truly what it’s like being around me. But then, they remember how much fun they had in the moment and want to ride again. :)”

Luna Shadows embraces the messy thrill of saying exactly how you feel on ‘gutspill’, a playful collision of her dreamy alt-pop world with the emo and pop-punk sounds of the early 2000s. Co-written and co-produced with Hot Mulligan’s Chris Freeman, the track captures the moment when keeping a crush safely contained is no longer an option. As Luna Shadows puts it, “It’s an ode to saying what you mean, even if you have to turn it into poetry and put it in a song.”

Twinkling, intricate guitar lines nod towards Midwest emo, but ‘gutspill’ has its feet much more firmly planted in crunchy, power-chord-heavy pop-punk. Dreamy electronics still shimmer underneath, while Luna’s airy vocal gains just enough bite to meet the guitars head-on. Layered vocals become increasingly important as the song progresses, eventually joined by playful oo-wee-oos and shouty gang vocals as the initially contained arrangement gathers momentum. By the final crescendo, everything finally bursts open – the musical equivalent of those feelings falling out “like confetti.”

‘gutspill’s self-directed video throws itself equally enthusiastically into early-2000s nostalgia, cutting between a traditional band performance, night-time scenes on a football pitch and Luna framed inside a giant star-shaped spotlight. Bright, bouncy and knowingly nostalgic, ‘gutspill’ proves that sometimes wearing your heart on your sleeve is considerably more fun than keeping your guts in.

Naarm/Melbourne newcomers Make An Exit introduce themselves with ‘SUCKERPUNCH’, an upbeat alternative pop-rock debut about the all-consuming chaos of an unrequited crush. Capturing that sudden rush of falling hard for somebody who isn’t giving you quite the same attention in return, the track brings just enough desperation to an otherwise bright and infectious sound.

Rather than relying on one standout element, ‘SUCKERPUNCH’ works because everything slots neatly together. Mid-tempo guitars bring shades of The 1975 and Pale Waves alongside a nostalgic nod to 2000s pop-rock and pop-punk, while the band’s male and female vocals prove particularly well matched. Their contrasting styles weave naturally around one another, adding personality to a catchy, polished arrangement that already feels remarkably assured for a first release.

The accompanying lyric visualiser keeps things simple, leaving Make An Exit’s broader visual identity to reveal itself as the band develops. Musically, though, ‘SUCKERPUNCH’ already gives them a strong foundation. Catchy without trying too hard and nostalgic without sounding stuck in the past, it’s an impressive introduction from a band worth keeping an eye on.

Caitlin Starr returns with ‘Pass Me By’, a melodic pop-punk anthem that explores the uneasy feeling of watching life move forward without you. Taken from her forthcoming EP Speed Saves, the single pairs crunchy guitars with soaring hooks to capture the push and pull between standing still and trying to keep pace with the world around you.

Despite the EP’s fixation on speed, ‘Pass Me By’ doesn’t rely on breakneck tempos to make its point. Instead, it leans into a more measured, anthemic approach, balancing buoyant melodies with a weight that gives the song real emotional punch. Crunchy guitar riffs drive the track forward while Caitlin’s confident vocal carries the frustration and longing at its heart, turning feelings of paralysis into something surprisingly uplifting without ever pretending everything is okay.

The accompanying visualiser beautifully mirrors that emotional tension. As Caitlin rollerblades through New York City, moments of quiet solitude sit alongside the constant movement of the city around her, perfectly reflecting the song’s central idea of feeling left behind while life carries on regardless. It’s a thoughtful pairing of sound and visuals that proves ‘Pass Me By’ doesn’t need to race to leave an impression.

LA’s Chloe Star delivers an exhilarating rush with ‘Games,’ a fearless pop-punk track that thrives on unpredictability. Built around the thrill of taking risks and embracing chaos, the single captures the excitement of diving headfirst into situations that probably aren’t good for you… but are far too much fun to resist.

The song opens with a playful swagger before gradually revealing a heavier edge, with flashes of metal influence pushing beneath its pop-punk foundation. Rather than settling into a conventional structure, ‘Games’ keeps listeners on their toes, eventually breaking down into a blistering instrumental finale that feels every bit as thrilling and reckless as the lyrics themselves. At just over two minutes long, it wastes no time making its mark.

Most importantly, ‘Games’ radiates personality. Chloe Star sounds completely at home in its world of confidence, humour and controlled chaos, delivering every line with the kind of infectious self-belief that makes the track impossible not to get swept up in. It’s the sort of song that leaves you feeling a little bolder than you did three minutes earlier—a short, sharp adrenaline hit that proves sometimes the most exciting moments come from throwing the rulebook away.

With ‘Summer 09,’ neon pop punk artist lolitslea captures the carefree excitement of adolescence in a track that feels tailor-made for summer soundtracks and coming-of-age movie montages. Inspired by the freedom of long school holidays, first kisses and endless afternoons spent riding bikes with friends, the single radiates the youthful optimism that has always been at the heart of great pop punk.

Opening with an instantly memorable guitar riff, ‘Summer 09’ wastes no time pulling listeners into its infectious energy. Punchy vocals, anthemic melodies and driving guitars evoke the golden era of 2000s pop punk, recalling the spirit of bands like Mayday Parade and All Time Low while allowing Lea’s own personality to shine through. It’s nostalgic in more ways than one, paying tribute not only to the memories that inspired the lyrics but also to the sound that defined a generation of alternative music fans.

Overflowing with feel-good energy, ‘Summer 09’ plays like the soundtrack to an American teen movie, soundtracking bike rides through suburban streets, long evenings with friends and the exhilarating feeling that an entire summer stretches out ahead of you. With her sophomore album RollerCoaster Tycoon on the horizon, lolitslea continues to prove she’s more than capable of delivering pop punk that feels both comfortingly familiar and refreshingly her own.

Neon pop punk artist lolitslea is excited to announce her highly anticipated sophomore album RollerCoaster Tycoon, set to be released on September 15. Alongside the announcement comes her new single and visualiser ‘BURNOUT!! BURNOUT!!’.

“RollerCoaster Tycoon is not only an iconic computer game from the early 2000s, it’s a way of life,” shares Lea. “If I had to describe my life’s anthem or pick a “soundtrack to my life”, this would be it, I wrote it! Life is a rollercoaster (cliche). You can become a part of my chaos, but if you can’t handle it, there’s the door!”

About the new single, she adds: “Often as artists, we have to work multiple jobs to be able to pursue a career in music. The universe is always saying “get some rest and make sure you sleep at night, but then wake up and work a 9-5.. and then a 5-9” (oh wait, I guess I technically said that!) I walked into my writing session that day with heavy eyelids and a fast heart rate, leading to us writing ‘BURNOUT!! BURNOUT!!’”

Fueled by gritty attitude and a razor-sharp hook, the track blends their signature sound with a more rebellious edge.

Bold, catchy, and a little bit unhinged, ‘Coming Up From Hell’ is all about embracing your worst moments and turning them into your loudest comeback. The lyrics lean into chaos and consequence, painting a vivid picture of a self-made antihero.

Speaking on the release, the band shared: “The song is about our journey as artists in the modern world, it’s quite tongue in cheek, but the concept of hell is all the battles we’ve been through to be where we are, and we’ll do whatever it takes – even speak to the devil himself!”

Helmed by bassist/lead vocalist Kelly Ogden, guitarist/vocalist Luis Cabezas, and touring drummer Simon Hancock, The Dollyrots are charging into spring with the release of their new single, ‘Attention Span,’ arriving March 13 via Wicked Cool Records. The track lands alongside the band’s Spring Break From Reality Tour, which launches March 12 in Minneapolis with Keep Flying supporting.

‘Attention Span’ continues The Dollyrots’ legacy of punchy, hook-driven pop-punk, pairing razor-sharp riffs with Ogden’s magnetic vocal delivery. The track balances grit and gloss with distorted guitars fueling the engine while melodies hit with sugar-rush velocity.

“It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with the intensity and rate of information thrown our way every day in this modern life. Important connections with each other and the earth seem to get lost in the shuffle. ‘Attention Span’ is a happy-sounding song about the confusion we feel right now,” shares Ogden.

Fast-rising Adelaide juice-box punk-pop duo Teenage Joans have unveiled their new single, ‘Bandits’, marking the first taste of the band’s next era. The release follows a whirlwind run of live shows that has seen the duo share stages with Foo Fighters, Sum 41, Nothing But Thieves and Sleeping With Sirens.

With its infectious chorus, heart-on-sleeve lyricism and a fresh genre-blending edge, ‘Bandits’ signals an exciting new chapter for Teenage Joans as they continue their rapid rise.

Speaking of the new single vocalist and guitarist Cahli Blakers shares, “’Bandits’ is the first glimpse into the next chapter of TJ’s. The chorus came to us so easily, and we kept it from a writing session knowing we had to use it because it was too good to lose. Early 2025 we went on a beach trip to write some songs and this one was one we ended up finishing. We really wanted to blend a country vibe with our classic pop punk. The song is about feeling an intense connection to someone, so much so that you would do anything for them and rule out the worst because you love them so much, like a Bonnie and Clyde style romance.”
