Chunky hardcore-punk riffs collide with a gloriously low, dirty bass that dominates the verses, while the drums alternate between a straight punk drive and bursts of frantic attack. Brief handclaps bring an unexpectedly playful pop edge, while tempo changes and a mid-song breakdown give the track room to breathe before plunging back into the chaos.

Mariana’s vocal performance is wonderfully unpredictable, starting out almost sweet — albeit slightly unhinged before veering between conversational sneers, screams and ferocious roars. The result feels cathartic, defiant and strangely joyful. “This exhausting race against ourselves gradually strips away the very basic joy of simply living,” the band explain. “‘Silver Butterfly’ is our attempt to freeze time for three minutes and actually feel the moment again.” Death Pill make those three minutes count.

The scream that begins new single ‘So Mature’ was captured during the recording process as a christening party raged below the recording studio. One of those happy magic accidents that you then can’t imagine the song without. It seems apt given the subject matter and sets the tone for the next 3 minutes. Punk rock overdriven guitars fill out the song, Josh’s drums propel things forward with machine gun fills over the snare and toms with some Stuart Copeland-esque bell and hi-hat work. Cleo’s bass is a melodic counter part for Anna’s vocals, adding some sea-sick slides to the pre-chorus along with the tension building guitars. The chorus hits and the band don’t hold back, Liams ascending lead part helps add energy along with Josh’s hi-hats. Lyrically, Anna adopts a Trojan Horse approach, wrapping a serious message up in sarcasm with a knowing elbow to the ribs. ‘He’ll give you the time of your life, he’s had plenty of practice, he’s a man of 29’ follows the hook of the song ‘You’re 17, you’re so mature for your age’. It’s a deft way to handle an emotive and sensitive subject. A screaming solo, and some dying distortion takes us into the middle of the song for a complete tone change as the band pull back and get dark, before they launch into the final charge.

The track is a powerful ode to self-worth, highlighting the frustration and helplessness of watching a friend waste their time and potential. Guitarist and vocalist Caris shared, “This track’s been a mainstay of our live set, and always resonates with our audience. It’s about recognising your own value and not settling for less.”

Produced by the acclaimed Sam Cook – known for his work with Ducking Punches, Hell’s Ditch, Kidda, and Arms and Hearts – ‘Better Than This’ powers along with pounding drums, angular guitars and a singalong chorus.

The song describes the desire to return to normalcy after the solitude of COVID lockdowns and the video depicts band members Naomi Scott and Krystal Grow as Big Edie and Little Edie Bouvier Beale, recreating scenes from Grey Gardens, perhaps the ultimate story of two women who could do with leaving the house once in a while.

The band shares: “Working with J.Robbins was a dream come true, he even joined us on Start the World playing tambourine!”
