Romanie shares her triumphant new single ‘I Won’t Yell’ along with news of her upcoming album It’s Not That Funny, set for release on Feb 20 via Community Music.

New single ‘I Won’t Yell’ arrives as a declaration of defiance. Originally stemming from a folk song Romanie had written years earlier, ‘I Won’t Yell’ was co-produced with Adam Hyde (Peking Duk, Keli Holiday) and Tom Stell (Golden Features), reworked during a 3 day co-writing session in Sydney. Speaking to the process, Romanie shares, “We turned this small acoustic song upside down into this powerful statement, keeping basically all the lyrics and giving them a new meaning.

“The song is about not being heard as a woman: oftentimes we get called ‘too much’ or ‘too loud’ with the result of keeping our emotions to ourselves, or not speaking up about the things that we want to. ‘I Won’t Yell’ was a fun song to make: letting go of my constant self judgement with the nudge of Tom and Adam, who let me yell in the vocal booth.”

Multi-award-winning Naarm/Melbourne-via-Belgium alt/indie artist Romanie (she/her) today returns with her new single and video ‘Uh Oh’, a searingly introspective track about life’s chaotic journey grounded by her signature self-awareness and wry humour, written during a time of personal turbulence and signifying a darker, grittier sound. ‘Uh Oh’ is Romanie’s first new single since her acclaimed debut album Are We There Yet?.

The rumbling, grunge-inspired internal monologue across ‘Uh Oh’ brings to life the chaos of life’s lowpoints as she “takes it on with a bit of humour”, harnessed by Romanie’s warm, earthy guitar, glitchy synths and heart-piercing vocals which culminate in a fuzzed out cathartic scream at the end of the track. Co-produced by Romanie and Sam Swain (RAT!hammock, Obscura Hail), ‘Uh Oh’ was written with Hamish Mitchell (Armlock) and initially recorded at Naarm’s Purple Wayne Studios following Romanie’s first full band national tour in 2024, tracked over two days with her live band (Emma Rumble – she/her – bass, Naomi Best – they/them – drums, Thomas Swain – he/him – guitar/BVs) at Naarm’s Sunset Pig Studios. The track is accompanied by a suitably late 90s/early 00s-esque video directed by Young Ha Kim (Mdou Moctar, Kaiit, Press Club) and shot on Wurundjeri Country at Harvey Wreckers and Gary Mac car wrecking yards in Cranbourne – a winking call-back to the shiny, pastel-tinged car in the video for Romanie’s Are We There Yet, and a symbol of her stepping away from her older sound.

On ‘Uh Oh’, Romanie shares, “I was going through a rough patch in life with some health scares and homesickness and caught up with my friend Hamish Mitchell, we wrote ‘Uh Oh’ over a couple of hours. A few months later we started playing it live – it’s a really fun song to play live. This was the first time taking my live band into the studio and I think Sam Swain captured our energy really well. The scream got added towards the end of the session mainly as a joke but everything evolved so naturally and we kept it in. For the video, I emailed about 20 different car wreckers around Victoria and some of them were not super enthusiastic: one of them got back to me just saying ‘Go get fucked. Sent from my iPhone’. Darren from Harvey Wreckers and Troy from Gary Macs both replied with enthusiastic good news a few days before I was about to abandon the idea, and the locations were so amazing – the whole day I was smiling and giggling amongst the wrecks.”

Romanie’s power lies in her storytelling – her ability to see the world beyond the noise and channel her introspections into piercingly relatable yet beautiful songs. Her latest single ‘Are We There Yet?’ taps into the nuanced feeling of being never enough, of always striving for the next thing. With this she primes the landscape for her debut album Are We There Yet? – a body of work exploring the intricacies and intensity of time itself.

“The idea for the song came from a prominent feeling in my life where I always feel like I’m looking towards the next goal, dreaming about the next thing,” Roman ie explains. “Always running out of time and feeling like seconds are slipping through my fingers. Especially throughout lockdown, I felt like I was aging but nothing else was happening and I got so frustrated by what felt like missed opportunities.”

Collaborating once again with acclaimed producer Alex O’Gorman (Angie McMahon, BATTS), Romanie has also taken on a co-production role for the single. Mastering was skillfully handled by Isaac Barter (Alex The Astronaut, Didirri).

The single ‘Are We There Yet?’ serves as the centrepiece of Romanie’s forthcoming debut album. Inspired by a sense of perennial restlessness and the constant pursuit of personal goals, it captures the inner struggle of being perpetually fixated on the future. Feeling the weight of stagnation and a deep frustration with missed opportunities during the lockdown period, she imbues a genuine and palpable urgency within the song.

Initially uncertain about the song’s completion, Romanie revisited her creative process a year later when she stumbled upon an old voice memo that bore the question ‘Are We There Yet?’ – with a new found mindset of brutal honesty she was able to re-craft the single with piercing authenticity.

“For ‘Are We There Yet?’ this approach definitely was a great vibe – I wanted it to feel like the song was rushed, as if you’re always on edge. I still wanted it to be a playful song, imagining my 10 year old self sitting in my mom’s car and asking 50 million times ‘are we there yet? when will we arrive?’ – as if that would get me my answer when I’d have made it in the music industry or life in general,” Romanie continues.

Drawing on her personal life, Melbourne based indie-pop singer-songwriter Romanie weaves her haunting storytelling alongside dreamy vocals and heartfelt lyrics on new single ‘Anthony’. She seamlessly pairs jangling guitar riffs with chilled pop vocals on this new single, which was written after watching the movie The Father starring Anthony Hopkins. A story and song about dementia, Romanie is unfortunately familiar with the topic having lost her grandfather who was suffering from the disease before passing away last year.

“I remember coming home from the cinema late at night and getting this wave of inspiration,” she explains. “I sat down with my guitar and wrote the song almost completely in one go. We were still in and out of lockdowns and I was chatting on Zoom with my friends from overseas Michiel and Kate who encouraged me to finish the song. The first band rehearsal back, we played ‘Anthony’ through and it felt like magic to make this song into something bigger with my band, so much fun.”

Mining her personal life for inspiration is something Romanie never shies away from in her songs and with ‘Anthony’ – it’s easy listening from start to finish. Her evocative writing reveals an honesty that the listener can’t help but to be compelled to love. To record the single, she enlisted the help of producers Alex O’Gorman (Angie McMahon, BATTS) and Hamish Patrick (George Alice, Gretta Ray), with Romanie also co producing the track. It was mastered by Isaac Barter (Alex The Astronaut, Didirri).
