Conjuring the searing alternative Americana of Smog and Lucinda Williams, the track rings of an unhurried and spacious resonance; steady guitar lines and amber-toned keys are held together by Coyes’ unmistakable voice, always sprawling and scraping towards a greater emotional precision. A discerning lyrical storyteller, they practice a form of unflinching empathy capable of breaking down generational wounds. In its place, unfurling a bold and stirring articulation of hope.

Coyes says of the track: “’Animal Thing’ starts in The Imperial Pub (Toronto, ON) at 12:15 am on a Tuesday. It’s about that liminal space between wanting to know someone and knowing them, drinking more than you should to talk a little longer, to feel a little stronger, going home alone and building castles in the sky over coffee on the front porch.”

The forthcoming EP Teeth captures Ella Coye’s introspective musings on nostalgia, intimacy, and avoidance in their signature style of thoughtful lyricism and unyielding and spacious indie rock rooted in folk tradition. Combining dark outsider folk tinted guitar lines with vocals that are at once commanding and frangible, the new single ‘All Dogs Go To Heaven’ is made up of a series vignettes on power and potency, or lack thereof, with Coyes saying it’s about “the temptation to find the line and cross it.”

Coyes continues to say, “this song happened through small notes that kept coming back, pulling a bunch of little phrases that I was obsessed with but couldn’t find a place for. I wanted it to sound like it was tumbling.”

Speaking on the single, Sister Rays says it’s “like a supercut of nostalgia that morphs into whatever the mid-20s equivalent is of finding out that the tooth fairy isn’t real but hating that you have to know.”

‘Good News’ thematically marks the darkest song on Communion despite being the lightest in sound. Speaking about the track, Coyes explains: “This song is about my frustration watching me, members of my family and the people around me experiencing issues that have affected us intergenerationally – and continue to do so – and see many suffer in silence. It’s written like a series of vignettes about a few moments that have really stood out in my memory. At first, it didn’t click with me that this song sounded so light because it felt heavy to me, but I feel now that a big part of this song is the freedom that I feel in the actual act of airing out those things that I would have willfully ignored or hidden from.”
