‘When’ finds the band sprinting toward a finish line, willing themselves forward across an urgent and confrontational three minutes. “You are a clock without a face, You are a mouth without the taste”, come the opening words from vocalist Julia Vassallo, as the band wrestles with the idea that something is missing from the world. When’s precise, controlled intensity is the sound of Slow Fiction attempting to forge some calm from the chaos of finding yourself in a downward spiral, looking out on a world that can often let you down.

Vassallo comments: “I think everyone has had a moment where their expectation of the world, a relationship, the audience they are performing for falls short, and it sends you into a wild spiral downwards. Losing faith feels so desperate, like falling into a pit of snakes. And the snakes all have faces that seem familiar, and they’re talking, but the words are all garbled. I guess this was trying to get to the bottom of that pit of disillusionment, or maybe get out of it altogether.”

Speaking on the track, “The reckoning, I guess. Looking back and forward at the same time. Knowing that you just experienced something difficult, and you aren’t out of the woods quite yet, but you can be eventually. Accepting that you’ve been the antagonist in your life at certain points. Anäis Nin said “A kiss can destroy a philosophy.”

The band kicks off 2024 by proudly announcing their signing to So Young Records, additionally commemorated with the release of their first single with the label, ‘Apollo.’

‘Apollo’ manages to capture a sense of raw feeling and integrity: a rare opening salvo that immediately defines who a set of young artists truly are. The track deftly explores when dreams and reality collide and the resulting chasm between the two.

As the band wrote on their newest release: “The recognition of being in love with what someone could be, but not what they are in reality. Apollo is the god of sunlight and poetry. Perhaps realizing that a person is not a god, without them you can still exist, create, and have a voice. Darkness is the absence of light, but it still has a word and meaning.”

Following the recent release of the EP’s first single, ‘Top 10 Movie Scenes,’ now, Slow Fiction share the EP’s next single, ‘In the distance, where it doesn’t matter.’

Speaking on the single, vocalist Julia Vassallo wrote: “There’s an old saying ‘there are three sides to every story: your side, their side, and the truth.’ The goal was to have this song embody a three-edged sword. Sometimes, the lines of reality and perception become distorted. The title is a line from a poem ‘Imagining Defeat’ by David Berman, who is a great inspiration.”

To introduce the forthcoming project, Slow Fiction have shared it’s first single, ‘Top 10 Movie Scenes.’ As the band wrote of the track: “Writing through a false lens allows you to put yourself in the minds of people you don’t know, and create storylines that don’t exist. The idea behind this track came about during a paranoid delusion… and a melody followed shortly after.”
