Sprout, aka Meg Grooters, is a Burnley bred singer-songwriter making classic dulcet tones fit for the 21st century. Out today via sevenfoursevensix (Matilda Mann, Matt Maltese, Lizzie Reid), ‘Come Back (To What Can Be)’ is the final track to be shared from their self-titled debut EP out next week.

It follows on from previous singles ‘In The Night (It’s Only You I Think Of)’ and ‘Settled (Here In My Heart)’, which showcased Sprout’s love for costumes as well as their gorgeous vintage aesthetic, inspired by golden age cinema and jazz icons like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.

‘Come Back (To What Can Be)’ deals with the weight of self-imposed expectations. Themes of apprehension in the lyrics contrast with Sprout’s glimmeringly delicate vocal delivery. Summery guitars paint a picturesque scene and an uplifting sense of resolve binds the track together beautifully by its conclusion.

Speaking of the track, Sprout said: “I don’t know why, but when we went into the first lockdown I put a lot of pressure on myself to create things. I had a lot on the back burner that I wanted to do and I thought one positive of lockdown could be that I would finally have time to do some of the things I wanted to do. Obviously though, the fear of impending doom and losing loved ones replaced this. I gave myself a tough time about not doing anything, then I made this song about it.”

Self-described as a “genderless blob of emotion”, Sprout’s newest single will feature as the opening track on their forthcoming self-titled debut EP.

Out today via sevenfoursevensix (Matilda Mann, Matt Maltese, Lizzie Reid), ‘In The Night (It’s Only You I Think Of)’ follows on from previous two singles ‘(I’m Just) Getting By’ and ‘Settled (Here In My Heart)’, which showcased Sprout’s love for costumes as well as their gorgeous vintage aesthetic, inspired by golden age cinema and jazz icons like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.

‘In The Night (It’s Only You I Think Of)’ is their most intimate offering yet. It covers themes of insomnia and how keeping the soothing presence of a former partner in their mind helped Sprout while struggling to sleep.

Speaking of the track, Sprout said: “I was with a partner for five years and the first year I was with them we were long distance. Whenever they would come up and stay, I would get the best kip of my life. Whenever they weren’t there, I would have nightmares or episodes of insomnia. But thinking of them helped send me back to sleep. It was my first time being in love and I’d never experienced feeling relaxed by someone’s presence like that before.”

Sprout, aka Meg Grooters, is a Burnley bred singer-songwriter making classic dulcet tones fit for the 21st century. Self-described as a “genderless blob of emotion”, Sprout’s second ever single, ‘Settled (Here In My Heart)’, sees them bring their dexterous vocal ability to the fore, channelling jazz icons like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.

Out now, its stripped back arrangement offers a blissful soundscape, while the contrasting lyrical content bases itself around a period of identity crisis for Sprout.

Speaking of the track, Sprout said: “I wrote this during a time in between lockdowns when I was experiencing a lot of confusion with my gender, my sexuality, my identity – the full scoop. I was trying to find myself by grabbing on to people, things and ideas that weren’t true to me, but that I hoped would give me a sense of purpose. This song is about that feeling of being aimless and rootless.”
