Racing with a seething, swirling energy and gritty raw emotion, ‘Tamoo Trance’ offers a fierce take down of consumer capitalism and the effect it can have on us if we let it take it hold. With lyrics such as “… don’t go on / don’t get sucked in cause 80% of what you buy goes directly in the bin”, it showcases the band’s ability to combine their trademark playful tongue-in-cheek wit with a voracious sense of rage. Front woman Kerry explains: 

“… (it’s) about noticing how quickly we get entrapped online into spending money, and spending the latest form of currency, our attention, and questioning how to break away from it.  It’s about how horrifying excess is. The fictitious shop, Tamoo, which looks like it should come with a gamblers aware warning sign, stocks everything you’ve never wanted, and it’s not just your money it will cost you being there.”

With perhaps a darker energy than we may be used to from the band, ‘Tamoo Trance’ loses none of The Baby Seals’ empowering, impassioned spirit and heavy fuzz-laden hooks, whilst encouraging us to rally against this definitely fictitious shop and all that it represents.

Kat Cashman, director discusses the video: “The making of the ‘Invisible Woman’ video was akin to all the time I get to spend with The Baby Seals – that ‘lets fuck around and find out’ energy that is the birthplace of revelatory magic. I tagged along to a venue they were playing at and got to witness their inner baddie rockstars unleash – kinda like the unveiling of a superhero. When it came to editing the footage I was getting a bit frustrated that the dark pub wasn’t displaying the surreal power they have on stage, so I fucked around and found out! The comic vibe is a nod to the super hero wonder women they announce whilst playing, and also to the Vibrator video made by Liam Goodrum Bell from label mates Tape Runs Out. Once I realised I liked where that was going, it gave me a chance to keep fucking around and finding out, I had A LOT of fun on this edit. I love that a live gig video has become a sort-of story, and stories are where we can make the Invisible, visible. How poetic. Thanks for having me seals, you rock.”

Kerry Devine on ‘Invisible Woman’s lyrical content and rage: “A friend once explained to me what happens when as a woman you get to a certain age, you become Invisible! This song explores the societal invisibility women experience as they age. we want women to know that they’re seen and celebrated.”

Why does being told you look younger than you are by a complete stranger make you feel so good? Kerry Devine explains the genesis of the song “getting ID’d – last time it happened to me was at Aldi, my response was to take it as a compliment – but then as I walked out I thought to myself, how weird is that? What’s wrong with looking your age?! What is this obsession about looking younger, especially for women, as a man you can be a craggy faced ‘silver fox’ but what is it about women where our currency is directly linked to youth. The song is about us questioning our response and what that says in turn about women older than us.’

Kerry discusses the concept for the video: “I needed some milk, and the band needed a video, so we did what we do best: multitask. The dynamic shots—the ones where Kate and Amos had to be in the trolley, holding the phone—were a reference to the Titanic scene where Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are dancing below deck to a jig.”

Kerry says, “It gave the video good pace and helped me run off those little pastel de nata cakes.” The sisters used to make homemade versions of famous films and music videos. Their favourites were ‘Shout’ (a riff on ‘Scream’) and The Spice Girls’ ‘2 Become 1’ (which they turned into ‘4 Becomes 8’).

Kerry says: “I dance around my bedroom a lot – it’s a pretty good thing to do, (do it as much as you can) and with a small budget and limited time (my 2 year old was taken out for the afternoon so we had a couple of hours to play with) I thought us twatting around the bedroom would be a good setting for Vibrator. Liam did wonders with the video and really got it where we wanted it”

Special effects from Liam of another of the labels artists, Tape Runs Out; “When thinking about what style the video should be in, I kept coming back to an idea of ‘electricity’ to get that buzzing concept over without being too literal with the lyrics. The song also has an invigoratingly grimy atmosphere, so I wanted to make a video that had a trashy, b-movie feel to it. The words are trembling and the figures have a flickering style, both of which were done to help accentuate the sense of electricity coursing through everything. I used footage from old educational videos about electronic oscillators to help with the retro element, I made it look like it was shot on VHS for the icing.”
