For fans of First Aid Kit, BoyGenius and The Staves, The Deep Blue is made up of Sophie Wozencraft, Georgia Gage, Niamh Feeney, and Katie Emanuel. Known for their distinctive harmony-heavy sound, their blend of rebellious lyrics with hypnotically beautiful vocal layering has captivated audiences since bursting onto the scene in 2021 with their debut EP Taking On Water.

Their poignant new track is about the universal feeling of leaving home. Across the period of 2010-2016, these four women left home. Left their sisters, left their parents and the safety net of familiarity. Swapped them for breeze block student halls, red brick labyrinths and beaten-up trainers.

Speaking of the track, the band say, “This was one of the first songs we’ve recorded in Manchester! Which is ridiculous given we’re a Manchester band! It was a nice sunny day and we’re all squished into a bright room at the very top of a mill. We always have fun recording but this time was extra joyous. We spend more time together than with our families these days and this song is all about finding a home away from home. For that reason, it just felt kind of tingly. Like a little secret we were carrying around has been made into music.

“A lot of people live away from home. A lot of people miss home! We see you. We miss our homes too. But we have each other and we love each other and when you listen to our music, you enter our wee bubble of love and you become a member of The Deep Blue family in all its messy madness and comforting warmth.”

New emotive single ‘Somebody’s Daughter’ is The Deep Blue’s response to the ongoing border crisis, as they explain: “We feel alarmed by the current discourse around asylum seekers which is often dehumanising. With our song and music video, we have tried to combat the facelessness of the people attempting to seek refuge in the UK, when the government has not provided safe and legal routes for them. Rejecting the ‘us and them’ narrative and moving towards deeper empathy and compassion. The injustice of it is horrifying.

“This song is our personal response to try and navigate the polarising and inhuman media narrative around borders and asylum seekers. 40% of global refugees are children. That’s 43.3 million children. Watching someone’s childhood be ripped away and reduced to a statistic is hard to stomach. All these young children are somebody’s child.”

With the ultimate destination of the release of their masterpiece Sugarcoat EP in sight, released on July 7, ‘Lakehouse’s gentle balm, borne of lived experience in the field of love and loss, is a study in disciplined songwriting and effective, restrained performance. Where the EP’s first single, ‘How About It?’ roared out of the blocks as a “protest bop” for the ages, and last month’s release of ‘Lost Boy’ appeared to glide, effortlessly, into the world on wings of lush instrumentation and those vocals, ‘Lakehouse’ weaves beats-based modernity with a touch that could only be human and of fragile heart.

The band says of the single: “’Lakehouse’ is a very special song to us and the most emotionally raw on the EP. It’s an ode to the paradox of fearing vulnerability whilst longing for connection. Sometimes the words are just too heavy to say out loud.”

Where ‘How About It?’ caught the band barely biting their tongue on body politics and the regularly bruising world order, ‘Lost Boy’ links the four-piece’s innate musicianship, synced values and traffic-stopping vocals to repair a broken bridge between youth and growing up. With gentle tones, the song cradles those that have made the missteps that can easily befall people trying to make the leap alone.

The band says of the single: “Singing this song makes our hearts ache a little bit as our minds are inevitably drawn to someone we love who has lost their way. Clinging on to their youth just a little too tightly. Perhaps we all know a boy who has never made peace with adulthood? The life of the party and always the last to leave? It’s not only about those people, ‘Lost Boy’ is also an ode to the young child within us all.”
