ScarLip is an artist who has become known for her aggressive-sounding songs that pack a huge punch. Overall, fans have enjoyed the fact that she is bringing a unique flare to women’s rap. However, she found herself in the midst of controversy with her fans this past week. After sharing a clip from her music video for ‘She’s Hot,’ fans called her out for twerking. Some felt like an executive told her she needed to do that, with others feeling as though it was all out of character. In the end, ScarLip apologized and revealed that the twerking concept was her own. Since then, the song has arrived and it is a banger. Overall, this song is very much in line with Scar’s previous work in terms of both style and substance. The bars are fiery and braggadocious and they are delivered in a commanding way that makes you believe everything Scar says. She is a breath of fresh air in the rap world, and songs like these will continue to ingratiate her with fans. Fresh from stellar comeback ‘Make It Bang’, Flohio lifts the levels once more on her excellent new single ‘Juice’. Out now, it feels tailor-made for summer – absorbing electronic tropes into its framework, ‘Juice’ feels finessed for club use. Flohio comments… “‘Juice’ is one of those records where I had no plans or intentions in the direction it was going to go. Cardi B has released a new single, ‘Enough (Miami),’ which follows ‘Like What (Freestyle)’ from a couple weeks ago. North Carolina rapper Rapsody has announced a new album, Please Don’t Cry, due May 17 via We Each Other/Jamla/Roc Nation. The 22-song album features Erykah Badu, Lil Wayne, Baby Tate, Alex Isley, Phylicia Rashad, Keznamdi, and more, and it includes recent single ‘Asteroids’ (ft. Hit-Boy), as well as the just-released ‘Stand Tall.’ “‘Stand Tall’ is the first song I recorded when I started working on this album in 2020,” Rapsody says. “I would say it represents my desire to speak to my humanness in the most free way. It started me on the journey, and it required me to be fearless, which is why I titled it ‘Stand Tall’ – be firm in who you are, legs straight, shoulder back, chest out.” The two-minute song comes with a five-minute video/short film featuring Rapsody in conversation with friend and actress Sanaa Lathan. “Sanaa was one of my guides and supporters on that journey,” Rapsody continues. “She offered so much insight, support, and tools to usher me through; as well as inspiring me with her own vulnerability. Barkaa has shared her latest single ‘We Up’, accompanying the release with an official music video. The single, which was produced by frequent Barkaa collaborator jayteehazard, and sees the rapper deliver a victorious anthem atop thudding bass and piercing strings. Operating at whiplash pace, Barkaa commits to remaining self-assured within relationships, friendships and everything in between. “I wanted to write something that pumped on the stage, that felt good spitting, that uplifted my people and hyped them up,” Barkaa explained in a press statement. “I wanted to create something fun, something cheeky and make a statement on what the concrete jungle raised.” Barkaa said the single is a reminder of her diversity as a rapper, a declaration that tells listeners she “worked my fucking ass off to get me to where I am today.” The accompanying music video was directed by Kieran Satour, and follows Barkaa as she takes a joyride with friends en route to a particularly rowdy night out. British hip-hop artist Speech Debelle is back in the spotlight with her latest single, ’11:11′, taken from her fourth studio album, Sunday Dinner On a Monday, which is out now. This album marked a significant return to the music scene for the critically acclaimed artist, whose career took off with her Mercury Prize-winning debut album, Speech Therapy, in 2009. ’11:11′ is a track that encapsulates elegance, grace, bravado and rap. One month after Australia voted ‘no’ to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament, rapper and Malyangapa, Barkindji woman Barkaa has dropped a clapback with the cutting single ‘Division’. ‘Division’ was made before the results were released, and Barkaa had originally hoped that the track would never see the light of day. But as the prospect of a no vote became clear on October 14, she began to ready it for release. In a press statement Barkaa says, “I was just so sad. But then a part of me was like, ‘At least I’m not crazy. Everything I’ve been feeling is real, is the truth. The nation’s rejection of us confirms it.” The accompanying video shows Barkaa ferociously rapping to a man wearing a cap in the Australian green and gold. They sit across from each other, making direct eye contact, as she spits: “I don’t want your table, fuck your table and its weak legs / Fuck your constitution, you can keep it for them rednecks / And everytime you look at us, I hope it makes you fuckers sweat.” [via NME]

Brooklyn star Lola Brooke has released her debut album Dennis Daughter and its third single and music video, ‘Don’t Get Me Started’ featuring Coi Leray and Nija. The Jersey-club inspired track received video treatment from director Ben Mark, showing Lola, Coi and singer/songwriter Nija taking over the streets of Downtown Newark, NJ and Times Square. The high-energy visual sees bikers and club-dancers matching the mood of the tune, as they hit signature Jersey moves like the “running man,” “rock ya hips” and “sexy walk.” [via VIBE]

Atlanta rapper/singer/actress and self-proclaimed “theater kid” Baby Tate snatches follicles in a dramatic lip sync competition for ‘Wig,’ inspired by RuPaul’s hit series Drag Race. It’s an anthemic song from her newly released EP, Baby Tate Presents — Sexploration: The Musical. To start things off, Baby Tate dedicates the vignette to members of the trans, drag, and nonbinary communities. From there, she plays a judge alongside Grammy-nominated songwriter Justin Tranter and RuPaul’s Drag Race star Luxx Noir London, in an electric lip sync battle that includes spirited dancing, colorful wigs, and feisty competitors who aren’t afraid to snatch them. The hook itself is an incessant command that becomes an engrossing chant. “Gimme your wig, wig, wig, wig,” she repeats over a thumping baseline. The video aligns with the song’s mischievous lyrics and jumpy piano; the animated miming — and the judges’ reaction to it — creates an epic exhibition in camp. As imaginative as it is braggadocious, the video is a fitting visual manifestation of Baby Tate’s technicolor mind — a fertile ground where impulse and big ideas become the stuff of theater.
