A gloriously bouncy slap-and-pop bassline immediately steals attention, locking into programmed drums and gleaming retro synths for an irresistible blast of 80s-inspired funk. Killtron sounds confident and playful across an infectiously catchy chorus, while a softer middle eight briefly cools things down, allowing her vocal to shine over gentler synths and percussion. Then the beat kicks back in alongside a wickedly 80s guitar solo.

That contrast neatly mirrors the song itself: warmth and familiarity meet renewed sexual energy and spontaneity. The accompanying video doubles down on the retro swagger, with Killtron dancing and posing in a fierce royal blue trouser suit among classic cars before the action moves into the night. Funky, joyful and knowingly sexy, ‘Touch This Body’ makes keeping the spark alive sound like enormous fun.

Naturally, DeTiger’s bass is the star. Soft and understated but impossibly slinky, its funky disco groove winds through the track alongside a driving beat, while flashes of trumpet and saxophone add to its distinctly 70s flavour. DeTiger sounds effortlessly cool and sultry, with the additional vocals slipping seamlessly into the groove rather than disrupting it. By the closing stretch, Flavor Flav arrives with spoken interjections enthusiastically bigging her up.

DeTiger’s self-described “boogie sleaze” proves remarkably accurate: ‘N.Y. Baby’ feels dirty, glamorous and made for movement. There’s a touch of Studio 54 fantasy in its strutting groove, but enough downtown grit to keep things from becoming pure nostalgia. Sweaty, sexy and gloriously funky, it captures that irresistible urge to stay out just a little bit longer.

‘Sugar Pie’ is the first new music from the acclaimed funk 4-piece since their much-loved debut album Black Light caused a stir in summer 2021. Back with the silky tones of lead singer Tristan Carter-Jones, fans will still recognise Dakota Jones’ signature powerful R‘n’B-infused funk sound but something has changed… The funk is dirtier, the vocals are sultrier. It’s got grit but there’s also a sweetness at play with ‘Sugar Pie’, with Tristan singing about ‘sweet songs since day one,’ and sharing the infectiousness of being in love. With one eyebrow raised and a crooked grin, it’s a fun return for the esteemed Brooklyn 4-piece.

‘It’s the effortless cool of a gang of two, walking in step through streets paved with sugar under a plush pink sky,” says the band. “Don’t know where you’re going and you don’t care. It’s rose-coloured glasses on the tip of your nose, and kisses like cotton candy.”

The forthcoming six-track collection from Shira Elias, SERVICES the EP, encapsulates the singer’s growth as she further establishes her sound and discovers more of herself–both as an artist and as a person. The release of the EP picks up where Elias’ 2020 debut EP, GOODS the EP left off. It kicks off a new chapter for the singer, one that is refined and self-assured. Elias explains, “Where GOODS was my first solo endeavor, really trying to find a voice while still living and grinding in New York, SERVICES is me exploring a new world, moving to Los Angeles during a global pandemic, and trying to love who I am. I think you can really hear the evolution and the difference in the writing and production.” Produced by MEGA, Elias is thrilled to share her most realized body of work to date.

The EP’s first single out now, ‘HOOK’D’ explores the thrilling early stages of an all-consuming crush, and is just a taste of what’s to come from the captivating vocalist. The track masterfully blends Elias’ smooth vocals with a funky bassline and an electric, futuristic R&B sound. “‘HOOK’D’ is about animalistic love; that carnal, raw, exciting feeling of the chase at the beginning of a connection,” shares Elias. “It’s supposed to sound like the sparks that fly and build inside of you when you are attracted to someone but the mystery of not knowing where it will go.”
