Dual vocalists Serena and Millie weave intricate harmonies over complex instrumental landscapes, with saxophonist Monarch and drummer Joe’s technical ability adding a crucial layer of depth. Produced by Joseph Futak (Tapir!, lilo), new single ‘Tourist’ – out now – offers a taste of this interplay, with Serena noting the song’s lyrics’ depiction of “an exaggerated ‘evil’ version of myself.”

Speaking more on new single ‘Tourist’, vocalist Serena said: “When I’m feeling guilty about something I tend to get quite dramatic and it’s easy to spiral into thinking one bad decision makes people think the worst of you. It was cathartic in a way to write all of that negativity down and realise that that isn’t really how I am. I wanted the lyrics to be quite bleak and matter of fact. I usually get caught up with flowery language and making my lyrics kind of opaque and hard to decipher but I didn’t want to hide behind that for this song.”

Says Elizabeth Heaton, “The monsters I sing about in this song are the intrusive, anxiety ridden thoughts that decide to rear their ugly heads from time to time, especially when you least expect it, just to remind you that you never truly have full control. There is a feeling of defeat and submission in this song, juxtaposed with the idea that the act of writing the words and music itself can be the resolution”

The single is accompanied by a video from producer David Gregory of Cineoteric Films, featuring the band members. Describing the approach he took to the video, David recounts, “Liz explained to us that the song ‘Monsters’ came to her during a tough time. Composing it happened quickly and organically as it very much helped get her through it. We wanted to explore the idea that art and specifically music is ever-present. As if we’re conduits to the vibrations around us and we’re pulling the lyrics, music and inspirations directly from our surroundings. Sometimes music reveals itself when we truly need it”.

New single ‘Orfordness Lighthouse’ along with forthcoming EP Trapped in the Big Room were recorded on a decommissioned Cold War airbase in Suffolk in the Autumn of 2021. A crescendo of horns, flutes and trip-hop imbued post-rock, For Breakfast execute the marriage of influences with aplomb; “Portishead with a splash of Cocteau Twins and Mogwai to taste” – the band suggest.

Speaking on the release of the new track, vocalist Maya and bassist Sam commented:

Maya: “As with most of our songs, I didn’t write the lyrics to ‘Orfordness Lighthouse’ with a specific meaning in mind. They came about in the same way as most of the music – on the spot in our rehearsal space. They’re there for the feeling and the sound of the words more than a narrative or anything, but looking back on them there’s a sense of holding and being held, tension and release that is a reaction to the music and the journey of the song.”

Sam: “‘Orfordness Lighthouse’ went through a few iterations before becoming what it is now. It was built around a chord progression and piano melody that Maya brought in – around the time that we were going off to record the first EP we’d made it into a Portishead-esque drifty trip hop tune, but we felt it wasn’t quite there yet. We came back to it during one of the first lockdowns and beefed it up a bit – we made some melodic tweaks to the first half, wrote the climactic end section, and couldn’t resist closing with some cute gang vocals.”
