A transcontinental deathcore phenomenon, FACE YOURSELF has redefined what it means to blend modern heaviness with old- school roots. Featuring members from New York, New Jersey, Colorado, and France, their unique sound is as diverse as their origins. Vocalist Yasmine Liverneaux brings her French influence and socially conscious themes into the mix, setting the band apart with an intensity and depth that’s rarely seen in the genre.
With their Myspace-era throwback riffs, drop-tuned breakdowns, and sheer relentlessness, Face Yourself have become a staple of the modern deathcore era. Their ability to connect with fans worldwide and their tireless drive have made them a force to be reckoned with—and they’ve only just begun.
Fury marks FACE YOURSELF’s second EP with Sumerian Records and their continued collaboration with producer Joey Sturgis (Asking Alexandria, The Devil Wears Prada). The five-track collection builds on the foundation established with Martyr, pushing their sound into more uncompromising territory while maintaining the emotional depth that has connected with fans worldwide.
We had a chat with Yasmine about Fury, the band’s origins and more. Read the Q&A below.
Hi Yasmine! For anyone discovering Face Yourself here for the first time, please give us a brief history of the band and your influences.
“Face Yourself was founded by Eric and Thomas. Eric directs music videos for a living and he decided to pick some musicians he worked with on videos to form a band. I ended up auditioning through a post on Facebook that Eric made about looking for musicians for his project. Being 6 in the band, we all have very different influences, between death metal, hardcore, slam, tech, pop music etc…”
You’ve just released your fifth EP in two years, Fury. What can you tell us about the record? What do you hope fans/listeners take away from it?
“This is the second record we’re doing with Joey Sturgis (producer). Most songs on Fury were supposed to be on Martyr, but after discussing with Joey we ended up choosing to make 2 collections of songs that sounded better together. We worked on having a more mature sound through this one and hope fans will catch this.”
Please take us through your songwriting/creative process. Did you do anything with this EP that you hadn’t previously done with other releases? What is your favourite part and what do you find most challenging?
“We came with unfinished songs in the studio which we don’t do usually. It was fun creating with Joey, he wrote the outro on ‘Ov Agony,’ which is my favorite song. I wrote vocals and lyrics for that song a year ago so I was really happy to finally release this one, especially because it is a very personal song. Most challenging part of each recording process is finding the time to do it, we all have different schedules and live in different states.”
You have a tour coming up in October. What can someone expect from a Face Yourself show? How do you want fans to feel after leaving one of your gigs?
“Yes, it’s very exciting. We have the best time performing and we hope people relate to that, it’s great to be able to share so much joy with the audience.”
Finally, what’s next for Face Yourself? Any plans for a full length? Goals for the future or anything else you want to share?
“We are currently writing a full length, and are discussing about future tours. One of our main goals is to tour other parts of the world someday.”
