Australian singer-songwriter aleksiah today unveils her latest anthem ‘Punch Drunk Love’, landing ahead of her ‘cry about it’ tour in the UK and EU this November and December.
‘Punch Drunk Love’ takes place on a night out where the club is the last place you want to be. Combining her trademark honest pop with 80’s synths, aleksiah finds the strength to keep on dancing while the world falls apart around her. Touching on the importance of mental health and queer spaces, ‘Punch Drunk Love’ is comforting yet invigorating, with a healthy dose of self-deprecation.
“’Punch Drunk Love’ came out of an interaction I had with a friend, it was their birthday and they wanted to go dancing to celebrate at a really popular queer club in my hometown” aleksiah shares. “A week earlier I had just gotten diagnosed with depression, so a lot was happening and as much as I loved my friend, I didn’t really feel like dancing.”
She continues, “The song is about trying to be happy and perhaps even find love when you just feel like the world is crumbling under your feet. When my producer Chris and I came to recording it, we wanted to make it really lighthearted and silly, and the 80s aerobics movement immediately came to mind, because you see one of those Jane Fonda workout tapes and it just makes you want to move. It might be a pretty niche experience, but I know everyone’s felt uncomfortable in the club before, so I want people to listen to this song and find comfort in this shared feeling we all have.”
