Lopez Island & Brighton synth-pop duo Disaster Fantasy release ‘The Hourglass’, the title track from their forthcoming EP due April 3.
The new single dives deep into the darker edge of the band’s aesthetic, pairing layered vocal harmonies with a pulsing electronic backbone. Built around a textured, lofi sound-pallet, the production blends atmospheric reverbs and swelling psychedelic synths to evoke a vintage new wave sensibility, all while maintaining a brooding, dystopian undercurrent.
As the track unfolds, its insistent beat and central synth motif subtly evolve, guided by shifting basslines and carefully placed melodic turns. Flecks of distant, reverb-soaked guitar drift in and out of the mix, adding depth and tension as the arrangement steadily intensifies, driving the song toward a powerful, climactic climax.
Talking about the single and the upcoming EP, lead singer Ryann explains: “This will be the most conceptually-driven thing we’ve released. ‘The Hourglass’ is a whole world. The stories in the songs are told from the perspective of characters who have some connection to a fictional bar in Los Angeles called The Hourglass. We’re huge Lynch fans, and The Hourglass could easily be compared to One Eyed Jack’s from Twin Peaks or Silencio from Mulholland Drive- bad things happen there; it’s mysterious and crooked, and there’s maybe even some esoteric, metaphysical force under the surface…
“It’s a fairly direct metaphor for time; but specifically, the fear of time running out. Every character is these songs has an anxious relationship to time. In reality, this was something I was dealing with in the writing of the words and melodies for these songs. Byron and I often have limited time in which to write and record and it ended up coming through thematically.”
