EMELINE shares ‘Emotional Virgin,’ an immense synth-pop belter that harnesses the glamor and drama of ABBA and Madonna towards a celebration of sapphic awakening and the profound sexiness of vulnerability. Produced by and co-written with Peter Thomas (Selena Gomez, Pink, Hilary Duff), ‘Emotional Virgin’ is EMELINE’s second independently released track after a major label breakup — a severance that EMELINE has emerged from sounding reinvigorated, more herself than ever.
The cheeky humor and sledgehammer hooks of ‘Emotional Virgin’ partially obscures its emotional core as a commemoration to the memory and energy of a late partner. As EMELINE explains: “‘Emotional Virgin’ is my very first love song. It was inspired by the experience of having my guard down and being completely seen for the first time, particularly about my first romantic relationship with a woman. It’s about feeling those new raw emotions that make you feel like you’ve never even loved before. She sadly passed away a few years back around when I wrote this song, but releasing it feels really special and her energy definitely lives on within the music and beyond.”
The soaring ‘Emotional Virgin’ video — which pays homage to the camp classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show — was co-directed by EMELINE alongside Paige Strabala. Says EMELINE: “She’s such an incredible creative who puts her all into the art she makes. It’s beautiful when everyone involved cares the same amount, you can make anything happen.”
